I loved the Clan invasion books and video games. I got into Mechwarrior Dark Age the figures game and it was fun to play but I HATED the timeline. Its like after the Battle of Tukkayid the clans just started getting their asses kicked in every book and video game.
Basically, it's because Tukkayid stopped their Blitzkreig. The clans started with a technological edge, but with the treaty of Tukkayid the industrial juggernaught of the Inner Sphere was able to ramp up production and research, closing the gap if not tech wise, then numerically. IS tech is still inferior in a lot of ways to clan tech, but it's also more diverse...and again, numbers. I agree though; clans are pretty badass.
Nope, I got the disc and game just fine. I do live in New Zealand so its possible I have a different release to the one you do but post update he's still available. 100 tonne aerospace fighter. Flying his slow lumbering pos fighter which is about as effective as an extra 30 odd tonne mech on the field. but You dont have to pay for his repairs or anything and aerospace support isnt that expensive.
Ouch, Im mine they worked fine. A few missions into the game you could hire a pilot who flies a 100 tonne aerofighter, You never uses anything but that guy after you get him, costed a bit but it was like having a 35-40 tonne mech making passes attacking your enemies and they never shot back at him.
@KoalaNoMarch I don't think so, because the bug was addressed on the official FASA release sheet, so it didn't work on any of the discs. Unless you are playing from a downloaded version, where that particular bug had been tweaked.
This game had the best timeline, from the original encounter with the clan to the battle that stalled their advance in the Draconis Combine. That and building up your own merc squad.
The only thing that bugged me was that 100 tonne aerospace fighter. Seriously? 100 tonne aerospace fighter and he's fighting for a pittance in atmo? who's paying for that fuel!? I'm clearly not!
@KoalaNoMarch What aerofighter? Although included in the game, there was a glitch in the game which didn't allow you to use aerofighters at all, even if you did hire the pilots for them.
Yeah, but the AI for them was glitchy at best; had my guy crash into mountains and buildings many a time, or get stuck in mid air. And the enemy DOES fire at them; one time my aerospace fighter got stuck and it seemed like every mech in visual range just turned and shot at him lol. As far as I'm concerned, this game was the best out of the series, Mech 3 coming second just for sheer graphical upgrade and better AI. Remake this game with better graphics and you'll have a winner
@halranger But it is slow moving, so even a concentrated attack by a lance of 'Mechs or even a MechBuster or aerofighter patrol could pretty much bring it down with one direct volley.
@cygmatic Right on! with Atlas, Mauler, Catapult, Mad Dog (Vulture), Timberwolf (Mad Cat) not to mention tanks, arespace fights that can pack a punch and fun weak ass, but speedy as hell harasser!

@ImperialArmour For it's time, yes, but from 3064 onwards, the Atlas was being rplaced by newer, advanced Assauly models, like the Templar. Still, there is no substitute for a machine that can put the fear into any pilot's head just by looking up at it's skull
I'd like to see a mechwarrior game that takes place back in the early days of the clans.... with operation Klondike and so on, and Star League mechs. Or maybe some of the early succession wars stuff. Heck some periphery plotlines would kick ass too.
@steelviper1 MechWarrior 2: 31 Century Combat was ALL Clan-based, as was MechWarrior 2: Ghost Bears' Legacy. The Inner Sphere and Clans didn't start mixing until 3/4 through MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries, so I'm not sure where you got the idea they all have been based solely on the IS.

@JheakrynaKyAlur I think you'll find that the Crusader Clans learnt their lesson at Tukayyid. Huntress and Strana Mechty simply reinforced it to ALL of the Clans.
@VazzaPrime The Crusader ideology didn't fracture far enough at Tukayyid, hell, the entire Refusal War proved a whole point, well when the Falcons and Wolves seriously weakened themselves. But you're right about the entire Counterattack arc when Clan Smoke Jaguar literally got smoked.
Sorry, you simply will not convince me that the visual design for the Atlas isn't off from what the loadout is according to the game. The atlas has been featured in 4 different cutscenes for MW games you never really see the weapon used. IMO if the visual design for the cannon was as impressive as its stats, animators would feature it in the movies very prominently. The only cutscene it's even in is the MW2MC intro, and even that's arguable since it looks like two sperate trails of bullets.
@Aetrion Auto cannons (which fire shells) have different rates of fire just like guns do. Shells however cah hove fins or other flight material attached to them. Consider the U.S. their bushmaster is a auto cannon (25mm) yet it's rate of fire is slow. The 7.5 cm KwK 37 from WW2 was one of the earliest AC yet it's ROF is on par with that of the bushmaster. Take a look at the atlas for Merc and the one in mechwarrior reboot. Same AC but different ROF. Ammo type does play a part.
Calm down, it's a fictional universe, and the ruleset for the tabletop simply doesn't incapsulate every single aspect of how the mechs function in the books...
@Aetrion What are you talking about? I just provided you with information from the books. You made it clear that the schematics did not match up and i told you why. It is the time line.
@dsgatling I still think the AC20 on the atlas looks way too small, I mean compare that with the AC5 on a Shadowhawk, did they somehow manage to miniaturize the bore of projectile weapons?
@Aetrion Again it is the time line 2457 to the 2700 take a look at the SH that medium laser on it's arm takes up over half the arm. Also size does play a part a atlas (17 meters) is nearly twice as large a a shadowhawk (9 to 10 meters). So a ac 20 on a atlas would be rather massive if mounted on a medium mech but would be half the size on a assault mech or appear small. Also there are different types of Autocannons the ac20 represents calibers between 150mm to 203mm.
@dsgatling You mean the one that just carries around a giant gattling gun under his arm? That one really does look badass...
I like all the designs for it, but the rules of the game don't always line up with the models. Like the original Thunderbolt design, that thing carries a gun that's bigger than some light mechs, rule wise its just a single large laser though...
@Aetrion First that is a rotary AC not a gatling MG Second the thunder bolt is older than the atlas by some 200 years 2495 to 2700. It is only logical that in 2495 a large laser would be a assault class weapon and be large. Do note that the size of the thunderbolts large laser has decreased in size over the years. And that the thunderbolt has been demoted from assault mech to low end heavy mech. Compared to modern mechs and omni-mechs the thunder bolt barely rates as a medium mech.
I don't know, the original Atlas design is really weird. The ink drawing that showed up in all the books and technical readouts, for the atlas features a tiny looking AC20, the LRM20 has 6 tubes, and it has a weird bazooka looking thing on the left side of its torso that isn't even a weapon at all in its stats.
It's just one of the models were rules and looks don't match. I still love the looks of it.
In mercenaries intro you can see the traditional atlas firing it's AC20 blasting off the arm of a ZEU-X. In this video this is the atlas variant carrying a Guass rifle instead of the AC20.
While the atlas is one of the most awesome mechs in the franchise, I never liked that its most powerful weapon is this understated little stub of a cannon on its hip. In no video featuring the atlas do you ever actually see it use the auto cannon because it just doesn't look cool enough. The later variants of the atlas with two PPCs in the arms are better, because its big guns are at least somewhat visible, though a mech that combines PPCs and a Gauss rifle makes little sense...
@Gallowell True, but it still doesn't look impressive at all. Even though the atlas is a fantastic and iconic design, the looks of the mech don't reflect the relative power of its armaments at all.
@Aetrion Well you can't expect to see anything close to real-life what the Atlas can do, however much I'd love to see a clip of a lone Atlas taking to the battlefield firing its big-arsed guns. Guess I'll have to wait until computer programming and graphics get better before I can see that.
@Gallowell My point is, it's biggest weapon is an AC20 mounted on its right hip, the weapon + ammo is heavier than all its other weapons combined, yet the weapon appears to be this tiny little gun that's attached to his hip where it wouldn't even have a big firing arc...
@Aetrion The barrel/firing mechanism are not attached to the hip, its hooked to the torso and above the waist where the turret ring is. Secondly, in order to make a 208mm cannon work on a mech, the barrel HAS to be short otherwise it would catch on everthing, hence the shortened range bracket. thirdly mechs are always pressed for space and their interiors are cramped; so fitting the actuators, barrel, firing mechanism, reloading mechanism, ammo feed means huge amounts of space taken :P end rant
Actually, it makes perfect sense since they have similar range and speed. if you want to alpha fire snipe someone, a mix of gauss and PPCs can one-shot many mechs from over 800 yards away.
@keljubenrezy Not exactly sure what you're replying to since I wrote whatever it was ages ago, but the reason why gauss/ppc combination mechs don't make a lot of sense is not because the weapons have different ranges, but because the weapons have wildly different heat generation. Anything with 2 PPCs or more (especially ER versions) needs serious extra heat sinks, Gauss rifles need none, it's not leveraging the strength of the gauss rifle to combine both weapons ultimately.
The Clans could never hope to defeat the Inner Sphere, no matter how powerful their technology is, as long as they maintain such childish beliefs and practices about war.
@IAmPhotoBucket To the Clans, that way is considered to be the true Warrior's wayh of fighting. Honour, loyaly,, everything one does to further the rest of the Clan to them is their idea of civilisation - that's why they consistently referred to the IS as barbarians.
Honor is fine. They are simply blinded by it to the point of outright childish naivete. "We're waging a war of conquest on you. We will be attacking these planets with this many mechs."
The literal definition of "scrub"
The clanners are like kids whining about someone who blocks too much, or throws too much, in a fighting game. "It's not fair! Don't be cheap!" as opposed to "Where is your honor!?"
@IAmPhotoBucket That's all individual belief, but for me, I'd rather honour any time.
While you stand more chance of being shot to hell, at the end of the day, you know that the events of a battlefield all rest on your skills alone and not some cheap trick.
@Gallowell There aren't any cheap tricks in real life. That's the entire point.
One side is fighting to win. The other side is not. If you're bigger than me I'm gonna punch you in the nuts. If you're a better shot than me I'm gonna shoot you in the back. The empire didn't whine about how "unfair" it was that the FUCKING DEATH STAR was destroyed by a single volley of torpedos because some shitheads did something fucking nuts and got lucky as shit ontop of using the force.
@IAmPhotoBucket Well as I said, different people, different ways of doing things. I guess because I grew up through the first 10 years of my life reading from the Clan point of view, much of their ideals rubbed off on me.
@Gallowell I did too. I got tired of being a scrub and whining because other people weren't following my made up rules on how to do play games. "Don't do 'X' it's cheap!" is no different to me now than what the clans were pulling when they first invaded.
@Gallowell If those idiots really cared about honor and whatever, why do they have no qualms about going up against people with inferior technology? It's hypocritical.
Don't use "tactics" it's not fair! Don't use more guys and focus fire on ours! It's not fair!
My tech is more efficient, has longer range, increased damage, better armor, better EVERYTHING, but that's a-ok. Also it's just fine if my mech is 3x bigger than yours.
Fuck them, christ. I hate all the kids that flock to em too.
@IAmPhotoBucket - I've handed out a good chunk of humble pie to Clan players using IS technology and tactics - not to mention 3025 tech against 3050 tech! Now with Clan society all but destroyed in the Jihad I'm worried. Take for example the new clan tech talons Jade Falcon mechwarriors put on their mechs as of Tac Ops/Strat Ops - these aren't the clanners of old anymore.
@jboycorp This game has been out for over 10 years now. I'm assuming you mean "MechWarrior" (the newest one) which should be out by either the end of this year or sometime in 2011.
I remember this somewhat. I still have Mercenaries--the CD of the full game came packaged with a video card me and my sister got when I was a younger teenager--I loved the crap out of that game and I still think the mostly metal soundtrack is one of the best around in terms of game music. But between that and the other MW2 music, I know I'm not alone.
@HaloSpartan96 Sounds like you found an old MW2 game. Unless they've made an updated version that I'm unaware of, all the old Mechwarrior 2 games at best run in Windows 98 at the latest. They're all mostly still kinda DOS-based.
all I can say is you bastards are lucky IM not on any mechwarrior dev team.....I put the whole damn universe online like WOW....every piece of machinary from planes to tanks to mechs...... I typed that JUST in CASE someone from Tinker and Smith might be reading and looking for help !!!! ROFLMAO
I still have this game in mint condition in the box..lol cant play the damn thing ..major suckage.....one thing that surprises me though is this is not actually the VERY end of the cinematic....there is a part where your guy is lounging in a sun chair w/ a drink in his hand on some beach...showing that you survived and made a good profit as a mercenary I suppose.
The latest version of DOS box will run it fine. If it's the Titanium version there's an XP patch out there you can download that will let it run in on most modern versions of Windows.
sry man your screwed it wont even run in compatability mode.....unless you can go to some flea market and get an old PC for a 5 dollars...LOL....not laughing at the money you spent k?
Of all the BattleTech and MechWarrior videos - both from fans and in-game itself, this is the only video I always find myself coming back to watch over and over.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I NEVER read the books on this. Ever! But watching the ending to this, from what I know NOW, that Atlus shouldve been able to take on that small group on its own. Its slow, but its got some of the best armor and firepower compared to most of the other
Dude! you do not know who the clans are???? I suggest your read some battletech books. If you peeps know how to read?(you know kids these days) LMAO!!!!!!!!
Well, if it makes you feel big and macho to insult people over the safety of the internet, and people who are new to the franchise, then go for it. But I would suggest giving them some slack. You would not have received the same treatment when you were first starting out.
Outnumbered? Yes. But that is not the only reason. If you had read the Legend of Jade Phoenix Trilogy (Bob Thurston) you would know more about why the IS won - since the Phoenix trilogy is based on the Clan side of events.
Well, the clanners are seriously outmatched in this video.. 3 clanners versus 6 IS mechs. So it really doesn´t matter how "menacing" the Atlas looks here.
Armoured recon, the Commando? It was/ is a 25 ton 'Mech - recon, even today, means armour and defensive is sacrificed for SPEED - in and out with the info you want and need.
The Commando fit the bill in all regards I would think. Fast light few weapons. I thought it was even classified as a recon Mech. I know the speed was up there.
As far as armored the whole class of vehicle is armored. All mechs are armored vehicles.
For us armored goes all the way down to M2 and M113 even armored cars. WW2 germans were the only ones to use a heavy recon team with any regularity.
BTW armored recon is to fight for information and probe for weakness. A blitz style innovation. Many countries have / had 4 wheel recon vehicles. .50 cal take them out.
oh yeah it certainly is killer looking but I love how menacingly human this one is. It walks like it owns the valley then raises its arms and molests everyone in its way
Aye, there is a big psychological aspect to it. Much like the Flamer weapons which all 'Mech pilots were afraid of, anyone who took a gander at an Atlas from their cockpit would probably dack themselves before getting torn apart by those AC weapons!
In your opinion at least. But do you even know how the Warden half of the Wolves fled to the Inner Sphere and how the last Crusader Wolves were challenged and lost in a ToA by Jade Falcon and became known as the Jade Wolves and how it was only at the mercy of Khan Marthe Pryde that the Jade Wolves were freed and allowed to create their own Clan again?
That only happened because Microsoft bought Fasa and started doing gay shit like making Dark Ages and stuff. The 3050 Clan invasion books were the best of this whole saga.
True, perhaps, but the only books of the Clan invasion I actually liked were the Legend of the Jade Phoenix trilogy and those written by Robert Thurston in TWilight saga. The only other BattleTech books that WERE any good were "Main Event" and "D.R.T" both by Jim Long.
I never read the Jade Phoenix trilogy. I should get into those ones. I read the Blood of Kerensky series Lethal Heritage and Blod Legacy. Haven't read the 3rd yet.
Personally, Jade Phoenix is much better than Stackpole's 3, as they are straight-forward and somewhat more gripping. Plus you discover the origins of Aidan Pryde, Marthe Pryde, Horse (Tyle), SC Joanna and, later, Diana Pryde.
Stackpole seems to prattle on, personally and gets very tiring for me to read.
Microsoft owns FASA Interactive and had nothing to do with the creation of the Dark Ages storyline, and no it wasn't Fanpro either....it was done by Wizkids Games, Jordan Weiseman in particular.
Or one could say, like the COmmando, the Mad Dog was merely scouting the area ahead of the other three Clan 'Mechs in anticipation of ambushes (considering the destruction of the Falcon Guards on Twycross) - ComStar wasalso prone to that on Tukayyid.
Ive played most of the games in the MW series. I like them a lot. Most of them anyways. But Ive never really st down to read the books, fan fics, side stories, ect.... Im curious if there is a site I can go to to make a long story told short how the MW wars began, who and why it started, mainly the origans
I suppose you could just search online for a brief overview, but the BattleTech/MechWarrior universe is so complex in most of its things, that the only real way you would have to understand the entire storyline would be to start reading the books from the beginning (BattleTech: The Legend of the Jade Phoenix Trilogy - Robert Thurston) and continue into the MechWarrior age.
The best mech ever might be Fafnir ( if im not mistaken its the one with sledgehammers aka 1shot killing heavy gauss rifles). Not only does Fafnir got the heavy gausseS(FOUR of em) but hes also got medium lasers, and armor that rivals Atlas.
That all depends on personal 'Mech preference and customisation of them. I personally prefer the Kit Fox loaded with nothing but energy weapons and jump jets.
Im a big fan of the shadow cat. And i also like nothing but energy weapons also. But its hard to drop the gauss rifle with the punch it packs for a light mech. well sort of light mech.
I hear that. Even firing the Gauss Rifle, the recoil is killer (much like the PPCs) so I tend to only outfit those types of 'Mechs with lasers (primarily Large and Medium because still retain your level of balance when firing those weapons.
No, depends on the 'Mech and depends on the pilot. Even an Atlas can be brought down easily if you use the terrain and are smarter than the person piloting an Atlas (I have personally brought down a fully working, no-damaged Atlas using only a Kit Fox)
Also can have to do with the config. I've seen outrageously insane configs on light 'mechs.
Also, as proof of what Gribae is saying on the pilot, see MMPD's MW2 speedruns, where he goes through each level as fast as possible with only a lone Firemoth. There is also the trial match in the end of MW2 where you're put in a 'moth and gotta kill both a Marauder and, if you so choose, a Dire Wolf.
I have been able to kill the Dire Wolf without cheats on Normal but not on Hard.
This cut scene really needs to be remade. Love the general theme of fighting in a valley, but the weaponry looks ridiculous and the 1 - 2 shot kills IS NOT realistic compared to ingame combat.
Remember for a game that was cutting edge in the late 90s, this was the BEST video quality of its time.
I don't see why people are obsessed with realism however. Take the battle for what it is and be content that you at least have something to compare when you hear references to the Tukayyid battle.
Man I this is one of my favorite ending videos. Even though in game graphics are better than this video these days. The fight scenes, pacing and even the music were all really well done considering when it was made.
Hoorah for the Fucking Atlas!

Compared to modern mechs and omni-mechs the thunder bolt barely rates as a medium mech.
dsgatling 1 year ago
I don't know, the original Atlas design is really weird. The ink drawing that showed up in all the books and technical readouts, for the atlas features a tiny looking AC20, the LRM20 has 6 tubes, and it has a weird bazooka looking thing on the left side of its torso that isn't even a weapon at all in its stats.
It's just one of the models were rules and looks don't match. I still love the looks of it.
Aetrion 1 year ago
@Aetrion Actually the :LRM tubes are to the Left and right those 6 tubes are actually lasers for the old style atlas

Aetrion 1 year ago
@Aetrion You do see it being used in the newest MechWarrior trailer.
Gallowell 1 year ago
@Gallowell True, but it still doesn't look impressive at all. Even though the atlas is a fantastic and iconic design, the looks of the mech don't reflect the relative power of its armaments at all.
Aetrion 1 year ago
@Aetrion Well you can't expect to see anything close to real-life what the Atlas can do, however much I'd love to see a clip of a lone Atlas taking to the battlefield firing its big-arsed guns. Guess I'll have to wait until computer programming and graphics get better before I can see that.
Gallowell 1 year ago
@Gallowell My point is, it's biggest weapon is an AC20 mounted on its right hip, the weapon + ammo is heavier than all its other weapons combined, yet the weapon appears to be this tiny little gun that's attached to his hip where it wouldn't even have a big firing arc...
Aetrion 1 year ago
@Aetrion The barrel/firing mechanism are not attached to the hip, its hooked to the torso and above the waist where the turret ring is. Secondly, in order to make a 208mm cannon work on a mech, the barrel HAS to be short otherwise it would catch on everthing, hence the shortened range bracket. thirdly mechs are always pressed for space and their interiors are cramped; so fitting the actuators, barrel, firing mechanism, reloading mechanism, ammo feed means huge amounts of space taken :P end rant
Mortarion12 1 year ago
@Aetrion
Actually, it makes perfect sense since they have similar range and speed. if you want to alpha fire snipe someone, a mix of gauss and PPCs can one-shot many mechs from over 800 yards away.
keljubenrezy 1 month ago

IAmPhotoBucket 1 year ago
@IAmPhotoBucket To the Clans, that way is considered to be the true Warrior's wayh of fighting. Honour, loyaly,, everything one does to further the rest of the Clan to them is their idea of civilisation - that's why they consistently referred to the IS as barbarians.
Gallowell 1 year ago
And that's why the IS will never fall to them.
I'd rather win and live than "play fair."
IAmPhotoBucket 1 year ago
@IAmPhotoBucket - better to have worried about the Word of Blake. Everyone fell to them. Some were even lucky to get back up...!
the567thDoctor 1 year ago
@IAmPhotoBucket That's all individual belief, but for me, I'd rather honour any time.
While you stand more chance of being shot to hell, at the end of the day, you know that the events of a battlefield all rest on your skills alone and not some cheap trick.
Gallowell 1 year ago
@Gallowell There aren't any cheap tricks in real life. That's the entire point.
One side is fighting to win. The other side is not. If you're bigger than me I'm gonna punch you in the nuts. If you're a better shot than me I'm gonna shoot you in the back. The empire didn't whine about how "unfair" it was that the FUCKING DEATH STAR was destroyed by a single volley of torpedos because some shitheads did something fucking nuts and got lucky as shit ontop of using the force.
IAmPhotoBucket 1 year ago
@IAmPhotoBucket Well as I said, different people, different ways of doing things. I guess because I grew up through the first 10 years of my life reading from the Clan point of view, much of their ideals rubbed off on me.
Gallowell 1 year ago
@Gallowell I did too. I got tired of being a scrub and whining because other people weren't following my made up rules on how to do play games. "Don't do 'X' it's cheap!" is no different to me now than what the clans were pulling when they first invaded.
IAmPhotoBucket 1 year ago
@Gallowell If those idiots really cared about honor and whatever, why do they have no qualms about going up against people with inferior technology? It's hypocritical.
Don't use "tactics" it's not fair! Don't use more guys and focus fire on ours! It's not fair!
My tech is more efficient, has longer range, increased damage, better armor, better EVERYTHING, but that's a-ok. Also it's just fine if my mech is 3x bigger than yours.
Fuck them, christ. I hate all the kids that flock to em too.
IAmPhotoBucket 1 year ago
@IAmPhotoBucket - I've handed out a good chunk of humble pie to Clan players using IS technology and tactics - not to mention 3025 tech against 3050 tech! Now with Clan society all but destroyed in the Jihad I'm worried. Take for example the new clan tech talons Jade Falcon mechwarriors put on their mechs as of Tac Ops/Strat Ops - these aren't the clanners of old anymore.

Commando paid the price for being armored recon. Scouts out.
437thx1138 2 years ago
Armoured recon, the Commando? It was/ is a 25 ton 'Mech - recon, even today, means armour and defensive is sacrificed for SPEED - in and out with the info you want and need.
gribae 2 years ago
The Commando fit the bill in all regards I would think. Fast light few weapons. I thought it was even classified as a recon Mech. I know the speed was up there.
As far as armored the whole class of vehicle is armored. All mechs are armored vehicles.
For us armored goes all the way down to M2 and M113 even armored cars. WW2 germans were the only ones to use a heavy recon team with any regularity.
437thx1138 2 years ago
BTW armored recon is to fight for information and probe for weakness. A blitz style innovation. Many countries have / had 4 wheel recon vehicles. .50 cal take them out.

gribae 2 years ago 15
oh yeah it certainly is killer looking but I love how menacingly human this one is. It walks like it owns the valley then raises its arms and molests everyone in its way
Dylanius 2 years ago 4
Aye, there is a big psychological aspect to it. Much like the Flamer weapons which all 'Mech pilots were afraid of, anyone who took a gander at an Atlas from their cockpit would probably dack themselves before getting torn apart by those AC weapons!

In your opinion at least. But do you even know how the Warden half of the Wolves fled to the Inner Sphere and how the last Crusader Wolves were challenged and lost in a ToA by Jade Falcon and became known as the Jade Wolves and how it was only at the mercy of Khan Marthe Pryde that the Jade Wolves were freed and allowed to create their own Clan again?
gribae 2 years ago
That only happened because Microsoft bought Fasa and started doing gay shit like making Dark Ages and stuff. The 3050 Clan invasion books were the best of this whole saga.
recniabsal 2 years ago
True, perhaps, but the only books of the Clan invasion I actually liked were the Legend of the Jade Phoenix trilogy and those written by Robert Thurston in TWilight saga. The only other BattleTech books that WERE any good were "Main Event" and "D.R.T" both by Jim Long.
gribae 2 years ago
I never read the Jade Phoenix trilogy. I should get into those ones. I read the Blood of Kerensky series Lethal Heritage and Blod Legacy. Haven't read the 3rd yet.
recniabsal 2 years ago
Personally, Jade Phoenix is much better than Stackpole's 3, as they are straight-forward and somewhat more gripping. Plus you discover the origins of Aidan Pryde, Marthe Pryde, Horse (Tyle), SC Joanna and, later, Diana Pryde.
Stackpole seems to prattle on, personally and gets very tiring for me to read.

But Ive never really st down to read the books, fan fics, side stories, ect.... bowlofarthritus 2 years ago
I suppose you could just search online for a brief overview, but the BattleTech/MechWarrior universe is so complex in most of its things, that the only real way you would have to understand the entire storyline would be to start reading the books from the beginning (BattleTech: The Legend of the Jade Phoenix Trilogy - Robert Thurston) and continue into the MechWarrior age.
gribae 2 years ago
The best mech ever might be Fafnir ( if im not mistaken its the one with sledgehammers aka 1shot killing heavy gauss rifles). Not only does Fafnir got the heavy gausseS(FOUR of em) but hes also got medium lasers, and armor that rivals Atlas.
deathlordmetalgod 2 years ago
Fafnir only has 2 rifles. And the HGR isnt the best weapon out there anyway...
Kazzmod 2 years ago
That all depends on personal 'Mech preference and customisation of them. I personally prefer the Kit Fox loaded with nothing but energy weapons and jump jets.
gribae 2 years ago
Im a big fan of the shadow cat. And i also like nothing but energy weapons also. But its hard to drop the gauss rifle with the punch it packs for a light mech. well sort of light mech.
Steelviper75 2 years ago
I hear that. Even firing the Gauss Rifle, the recoil is killer (much like the PPCs) so I tend to only outfit those types of 'Mechs with lasers (primarily Large and Medium because still retain your level of balance when firing those weapons.
gribae 2 years ago
I guess Atlas reigns supreme in the end tho heh.
legacyofkainjoe 2 years ago
No, depends on the 'Mech and depends on the pilot. Even an Atlas can be brought down easily if you use the terrain and are smarter than the person piloting an Atlas (I have personally brought down a fully working, no-damaged Atlas using only a Kit Fox)
gribae 2 years ago
Also can have to do with the config. I've seen outrageously insane configs on light 'mechs.
Also, as proof of what Gribae is saying on the pilot, see MMPD's MW2 speedruns, where he goes through each level as fast as possible with only a lone Firemoth. There is also the trial match in the end of MW2 where you're put in a 'moth and gotta kill both a Marauder and, if you so choose, a Dire Wolf.
I have been able to kill the Dire Wolf without cheats on Normal but not on Hard.

Steelviper75 2 years ago
Actually, it is only track 21. Part of the last half of track 21 is shared with track 20.
1:18 (in track 20, not the video) and 0:35 (in both track 21 and the video) sound VERY similar, if not the same.
In fact, I think both tracks share the same THEME, though they are not exactly the same, of course.
CrazyEnzo03 2 years ago
This cut scene really needs to be remade. Love the general theme of fighting in a valley, but the weaponry looks ridiculous and the 1 - 2 shot kills IS NOT realistic compared to ingame combat.
Still I enjoyed this game thoroughly
RunalzOrz 2 years ago
Remember for a game that was cutting edge in the late 90s, this was the BEST video quality of its time.
I don't see why people are obsessed with realism however. Take the battle for what it is and be content that you at least have something to compare when you hear references to the Tukayyid battle.
