@pikohammer Actually, the english version has Yukana singing the hymns as well. Nothing against Tear's english VA (despite that she sounds way too deep for 16 year old Tear ..) but I don't think I would've enjoyed Abyss if she had tried to sing them.

But I agree - why can't all J RPGs be brought out to the western audience with japanese voices but other languaged text? If someone doesn't like the japanese voices, they could switch to english ..

That's actually Sony of America's rule. All games released on the PS2(and forward) were required to either be in English, or no voice acting. Sony didn't offer the compromise of a language option.

If you look back, Mega Man X5 was originally released with Japanese dialogue and English subtitles. But when they were localizing the Collection, they wanted to re-dub everything, but didn't have the money. Sony wouldn't let them keep it the same way, so the Japanese dialogue was removed

They use it for two reasons though. First of all, it kicks ass and it cant be reproduced so well in English, like the Karma intro, the English used a guitar rather than vocals. And secondly, it follows the storyline of the game.
