Johnny could sing anything ; soul , blues , jazz , gospel. I was fortunate enough to grow up in New Orleans where I saw him perform live many times. Don't know why he never caught on nationally . Far lesser talents have made millions with mediocre material.
Never heard of him til I heard his record on the cable music station. Makes me want to sit in a smoke filled bar, drink and cry...! That means I love it.
I do remember this song but the version I heard was the one by Little Royal on King Records/Tri-Us Records 1972 from the album "Jealous." King, which had lost James Brown, was trying to boost Liltle Royal to take their top spot; his version of "Losing Battle" is definitely worth checking out, along with the single and title album title "Jealous," a remake of the original Garland Green song.
This is the song that Mac Rebbenack wrote. Listen to the piano in the background, beautiful fills while letting the singer take the front. Thanks for posting, this is my favorite Johnny Adams song!
Thanks John, Hadn't heard of Johnny Adams before. Some very tasty blues.

His greatest song was "closer to you". I would pay $100.00 for a copy.

I discovered Johnny by accident. I was a DJ at Virginia State. Played him as much as I could. Loved his sound. Was sad when he passed away.
