First of all, there is still second line music happening in New Orleans, lots of it. Second; the term second line comes from the name for people who would follow the mourners and the band, the first line, back from a burial after a funeral. The band plays dirges on the way to the cemetary, and the upbeat swinging stuff on the way back. Secondliners are the people who would come out of their houses and join the parade for the trip back.

Use a clave rhythm on the bass drum (or variations of it) the bass drum shouldn't be a straight rhythm. The march begins very slow and quite mournful on route to the cemetary but afterwards it becomes very up beat and people join on behind the band and the mourning family and dance in order the celebrate the life of the deceased. Those dancing behind are called the "second line".

Incorrect. FYI Actually, second line is the second line of people marching in a funeral parade. The first line was the family and close friends of the deceased. The second line was the other people that would join in the parade behind the first line and follow the funeral parade through town. As the parade moved through town the second line would usually grow as people and musicians would continue to join in and follow the parade to the end.
