I don't think that many Africans understand why we choose to call ourselves African Americans. 1) Our ancestors (which could have very well been many of your ancestor's sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews) were brought here unwillingly. 2) Many here in America have attempted to strip us of our identity. I was just talking to my roommate and he made me realize that what i meant by separating us from the experience is participatn n future prosp. The term seems like it will continue to justify a less prosperous america for descendants of slaves like you and me. Any European born person with a knowledge of their history would understand why another European born person would refer to himself as "European" rather than as the name of their particular country.

The term seems like it will continue to justify a less prosperous america for descendants of slaves like you and me. Cleopatra was born in Egypt making her nationality Egyptian. She was not African since her ancestors came from Greece which would have made her Caucasian. She is believed to be the first member of her family to learn the Egyptian language. The Egyptians that they met there are Africans but all the Greek people that came in after they took over are Caucasian. The children they had would be Egyptian since they were born in the country of Egypt.

black leaders insisted they did not want to be referred to as negroes--they decided it better to be called blacks- then they decided they should be called african americans- this all happened in the last 50 years people -notice how negro is only mentioned once in all the comments-next it will be Jesse and Al people- i don't know of any other nationality Insisting on being called by their heritage first- american second-

We still use the term negroe in Trinidad to describe our race. I don't see what's so bad about it, but a lot of people I met in America frown upon the word. That's why I avoid speaking of race with people. Some of them get a little too sensitive sometimes.

during jim crow they would lynch, kill black or whatever, and call is filthy negroes or whatever. white people named us negroes. although negro only means black spanish it was used in a mean and derogatory way. like the colored, it was used in a derogatory way.
by the way, white people invented the term motherland. because the first human bones were found in africa and that's where human origin started.

White people did not coin the term "motherland". This term has been used in many different countries around the world. It's written in many different languages but it all means the same thing.
I still see no problem with using the term Negro unless of course a racist person walks up to me and says "You fucking Negro". And even in that situation, you could substitute "negro" with any other word and it would still be disrespectful.
Words only mean what we want them to mean.

Italian-American, Asian-American, but maybe you've never heard of these.
The reason why the names that we are identified as have changed is because they were given to us by others, i.e. ni99er, colored, coon, negro, and yes Black. The only name that is accurate and not given to us by White people is "African". For me you can cut the "American" part off.

afrochick-let me start by telling you how deeply sorry i am that you had the misfortune of being born in the USA. you must find it difficult to understand why an average 5 thousand people risk their lives everyday to come to this country and would give any thing to have the opportunity you and Oprah have. Europe generally has been moving as a singular force (especially in regards to us!) for the past few centuries. Besides, there is a cultural and historical thread that unites all Europeans. Any European born person with a knowledge of their history would understand why another European born person would refer to himself as "European" rather than as the name of their particular country.

Yes. We have the same language differences/challenges, because we were given those peoples' languages, their religions, and their social customs.
But do we have the same initiative? Can we join together for our joint benefit? Do we even believe that we can work successfully as a group? What are our goals?

Yes, Italian and not Italian-American, or American of Italian descent. Yes, Chinese (or Asian) and not Chinese-American, or American of Chinese descent.

They are wrong for doing that. They have Italian and Chinese heritage but that does not make them Italian or Chinese since their country of birth is America. Your nationality(Italian,Chinese,American) is where you were born. It is what your passport says and your heritage is where your family has originated and lived throughout their history. People mix the two a lot.
