Wow, that's really disturbing. I agree with you on seeing it in the beginning, but what I see is it going to the chair, staying there, then walking across the screen. I don't see it walking into the tree; and whatever it is, it appears to be the same one.
When the kid waves his hand it shows that the shadow is IN FRONT of the hand not behind it. He waves it twice and both times the black shadow is in fact in front of his hand.
Wow! I'm not an expert, but I think you can see the figure on the left side of your grandpa (the right side of the screen) in the first scene too. Very cool! I'm curious to see what some "experts" would say.

Whatever the shadow is, there is one going into the Christmas tree in the first couple of frames.
