I think people misunderstood what Ms Austin was doing. The object was to recreate note fir note , lick for lick a version done by Ella. The original chart and a transcription of the scat notes is what was done. This was intended to be an act of homage to Ella as oppose to displaying Ms Austin own skills of interpretation. I understand all the comments just wanted to clarify.
Im sry but Patti jus doesnt have the Soul Ella had. Patti bored me with this. yes she has a beautiful voice but Ella, she had the soul along with the voice
I can't people are on here commenting on size, health-why not throw in the weather? Shouldn't the real point be the song - how beautifully Patti Austin executes this song - her scat-other musical abilities? She gave a solid performance with the Boston Pops Orchestra. Real music lovers will focus on the music. What else should be the focus of a music video featuring a great artist?
The essence of jazz springs from the tension between what the composer intended, and the liberties taken by the performer. The jazz performer is not the composer's dutiful servant, but a co-creator. Miss Austin here reveals a masterly understanding of this. Her recording of Spring Really Hangs You Up the Most, which made me a fan of hers, reveals that she knows how to be a dutiful servant as well.
SmushyWushy got right. This version is almost exactly copy of Ella's version ot this song.
It's cool, swinging etc. She truly have skills, but She should at least change scat solo (even vocabulary is the same!) In that case it's not even a jazz song, but something like karaoke;)
Timeless. And there is nothing wrong in being inspired by the great Ella. It is like when Andrea Bocelli is inspired by Franco Corelli. You can hear some resemblance but it is still different and special, An homage is never a bad thing when there is real talent as in Patti.
If I was a promoter I'd book her. She has the chops. Her music swings. She's a pleasure to hear. I wish the Tonight Show or Letterman would close their shows with a musician like this.
What do you want her to do?? She is singing the notes that were written by the composer. I love the fact that she is singing and not screaming like so many singers today do!
You are so right! I get tired of people screaming and yelling instead of singing. What's worse is when there are several "singers" on stage at the same time and they all try to out scream each other.
how you know? are you fatter since u drink baking fat everyday and regret you didnt stay on the donut diet? Come On please! Fat people Are also people fat thick This skinny ugly beauty whatever we are human ! thank u.
hmm everything is bad for the health! even your cellphone so fat skinny food drink fruit vegetables even sporting everything with the word too b4 a word is already too much
I love this song!! I heard it first on the movie Biloxi Blues..I would love to know who sang that on that movie. I loved the version that the person did..Does anyone know who sang it and where I can get a copy?
hello 8358002 mayhbe u could try to search on you tube and listen to all the tracks, maybe you did already eheh but thats my advise i only know that Patti and Ella did this song.
Swing It, Patti!!! She needs to be placed in the Scatters Hall Of Fame. I saw her perform this with Take 6 last year to an ecstatic and overzealous crowd. We hooped and hollered for what seamed like forever after that performance.
Patti is one of Ellas of her era...

If I want to hear Ella's version, I listen to Ella. Still, Patti has a beautiful tone, and can swing. Now if only she would make this song her own.

You're wrong, nichtsleezy. She is copying Ella's nuanced changes to the original melody line.

This is my introduction to Patti. She has all the elements of greatness. I heard Ella at Symphony
Hall.Patti has a rich voice and a likeness to Ella.
Hope she's still with us so I can be assured that great jazz talent has not completely disappeared.
