It's a surreal distortion of history lauding Guy Fawkes as a heroic symbol of freedom and anarchy. He was a religious terrorist who wanted to undo the Protestant Reformation and bring England back under the rule of the Catholic church and the Spanish Inquisition. Basically, Guy Fawkes wanted to create exactly the kind of fascist police state we see in this movie! Pretty much the polar opposite of "reminding the world of fairness, justice and freedom", wouldn't you say?

Anti-Catholic persecution had existed in England before Guy Fawkes (eg. the execution of Thomas More), but the Gunpowder Plot took it to the next level. For example, the Plot was used to justify the 'penal laws' in Ireland, banning Catholic worship, land ownership etc. Had the Plot succeeded, the Protestants would have likely suffered similar sanctions or even worse punishment.
