There wouldn't be any such thing as advertising if we changed to the Resource Based Economy being advocated by the fast growing Zeitgeist movement and Venus Project. I sure hope the movement keeps growing, I detest adverts.
Isn't this RSA cutting one leaf off a weed without ever getting into and pulling out the root? To ask an advertising association to analyze their industry's usefulness seems like the Fox guarding the Henhouse. Advertising is one of the many "tragic Flaws" in Capitalism. It becomes not a matter of who builds a better mousetrap but who has a better advertisement (etc) for their mousetrap.
all this is very 20th century thinking, we need a new 21st Century economics "Royal" ? perhaps "Noble"? No!
People do stuff. They have reasons for doing stuff; In that order. Ad agencies have known this for years. They tell the public that they are making 'choices' available, but they tell clients that the consumer has no choice but to buy the product once they see the ads enough. "Coercion" by Douglas Rushkoff.
Advertising should be banned outside of 200 miles from where a product is made or grown. If people need it, they will go looking for it. Don't buy from those you can't reach with a pitchfork.
greed wasn't created by modern advertising. modern advertising was created by greed. in the 50's companies were realising that peoples needs were being met, and therefore the potential customers were being lost as a result of not needing things anymore. so two inventions were born. planned obsolescence and perceived obsolescence. planned is when they design a product to not last so we need to buy more. perceived obsolescence is making us think we don't have what we need.
the problem is ads "convince" you by appealing to vices and exploiting psychology and biology; creating a harmful rhetoric, pretext and pretense for you to become compelled toward its product (if not, then branded into memory). even if it doesn't work and you choose not to buy into it; merely because the goal of the ad is to do the aforementioned, makes it grossly disingenuous. pity the laws sanction such behavior for the sake of currency.
This Simpson's moment sums up marketing perfectly -
"On a conveyer belt passes a lot of food & Homer shows absolutely no interest in & one of the researchers says "Those diet pills are AMAZING, Homer you really have no urge to eat that food in front of you?'
Homer Replies - "FOOD?, I'M BLIND!!!!!. (stumbles around the room).
Researchers respond - "Who's gonna buy a pill that makes you go blind?, to which the other researcher says "We'll let marketing take care of that!".
"...by the way, if anyone here is in advertising or marketing: kill yourself!
Kill yourselves, srsly! You're the ruiner of all things good.
This is not a joke! There’s no rationalization for what you do.
You're Satan’s little helpers, filling the world with bile & garbage! You're fu*#ed & you are fu*#ing us! Kill yourselves, it's the only way to save your fu*#ing soul! Kill yourself, kill yourself, kill yourself, now!
If governments really gave a crap about smoking they'd ban the product, burn the tobacco fields and use the land to feed the poor. "Modern Capitalism, modern fascism created the wage gap, the world has never seen capitalism.
You have knowledge gaps "Yes, you do and they're showing.".
Support the RSA, no chance, you guys don't even understand the meaning of capitalism ffs. Why would we support that level of stupidity? I only support real science. I had high hopes for this channel too.
@twistedbass15 Have you ever seen anyone with an iPhone? If you've even heard of the word the advertising is getting to you through others, if you've seen the logo on the back of someone's phone the advert is getting to you. Now if we consider for a moment that you have then know what the logo is and while reading this you've pictured an image of the Apple symbol in your mind, perhaps just for a brief second. That's how fast an ad works, this video was not made by intellectuals on this subject.
it seems even with laws, advertising is traversing a path of least resistance on a thin line between suggestion and coercion--saved only by the fact that humans still have a capacity to choose not to buy; though this capacity is slowly whittling away in such a closed environment.
it's one thing for advertising to inform people of a new service or good so that they may be knowledgeable, but advertising has gone far too astray. Advertising now abuses planned incoherence and biological attraction in order to secure their memetic nicotine in the mind of the consumer.
but at what point does expressing an idea/suggestion (product/service) too often (commercial stimuli) become no better than conditioning? and where does morality go when everything is paid for by these ads?
@xjustamem0ryx the problem is the advertisment on children under ceratin ages and secalizing of children thats where it has gone too far, thats the problem they are looking to solve and we should all consider it. I remeber when i was a kid their was a very sexist comercail made by walmart for children, it siad boys vs girls and it had effects in motivating kids to want products they dont need.

ads shouldn't exist to convince, for that is the viewer's right.
ads should exist to inform.
but in such a consumptive world in which products are predicated on failure for their design, informing people would be antithetical to the cause.
ads "know better" than to inform...and so the "story" is writ.

Advertisement could be a good thing,
the problem is the deception & lack of information.
I often find my self in need for a product or service:
I tend to ignore advertisement, because it almost never includes enough details,
it usually wants to sell me happiness.
Sorry but i will be the judge of what makes me happy,
the ad has to supply me with enough truthful information to let me decide that for myself.
A good balance of getting my attention without irritating me, is a vital part too.
