The Mayer/Matthews comparison sickens me because there is none. John Mayer is an egotistical maniac, guitar virtuoso but not much to his songwriting unlike Dave. Let's be honest. Mayer is good, but i know tons of guitarists who are better, and he hasn't done a single thing to stand out, or be unique and creative. Roi is just awesome. Same with Dave. Dave is a stellar poet, singer, and good guitar player. The great thing about Dave's playing is how original many of his riffs are. There are many guitarists who are more skilled, but Dave is unique, creative, and has the whole musical package.
I think John Mayer has stood out, he is himself, he does his own thing just the way Dave does. I don't know why you would compare them in that way and put John down. They're different people and they're both kicking ass. They're both unique and creative. Don't worry about which one is better than the other when there's no way to define it beyond opinion. lol Keep it where the light is!
I believe he has been able to stand out just through the multitude of genres he is able to incorporate into his music. A lot of his works are jazz inspired, blues inspired or even R&B inspired. The one thing I like about going through a CD of his, is that every song sounds completely different. Just by him going from Pop to a blues Trio he really did something that not many have done. That certainly makes him stand out. If you only listen to some of his radio hits, you may be missing out.
Mayer is an excellent songwriter and player. Sure there are better, but there always are. Mayer often gets categorized into the "top 40" crowd of pop stars and is discredited by that. Same could go for DMB. They are both excellent acts, and their radio singles are not representative of their catalog, live performances, or talents as artists.
Yeah, they are both extremely talented artists and comparing them is like comparing toyota to a honda, they are both extremely reliable and really won't let you down. I think Dave is one of the greatest song writers ever, but i really think John Mayer is coming into his own. I think Tim Reynolds is better at guitar than both of them though haha, i love tim reynolds. But anyway, they are all fantastic. And only an experienced guitar player could even attempt any of their songs.

Dave's songs are actually all pretty easy to play and sing along to. Dave can barley sing sure he can perform but not nearly as good as john. Personaly, I prefer dave matthews, but i still love John Mayer and respect them both greatly as musicians

yeah on the radio i heard him i was like oh sounds good but not too special but then i seen one of his live performances and i was like dude this guy is a pretty good guitar player alot of his solos and his songs are soo relaxing

O...M....G!!!!! I'm speechless so I'll just write. John Mayer is a supreme, and elite guitar player, who is to be respected. He's also a nice guy as I've met him a couple of times. Seriously....come on people, this man can PLAY and that's all there is to it!!! Whooooweeee!!!
