I have two Basset Hounds and their ears do get in the way sometimes, but they don't chew them off. I believe ear cropping is unnecessary and if you want a dog with upright ears there are plenty of breeds to choose from.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you so much for doing this. Every aspect of the process is so well explained. My wife and I will be doing our first taping this evening and this video has given me the confidence to go forward without apprehension.
Ear cropping is illigal in the UK and should be illigal in the States. It is unnecessary, barbaric and the dogs are so much more attractive with their natural ears.
@Miss65boo I have two danes with natural ears and one off them bit off the tips of his ears while playing with his ball. Tell me how that wasn't painful for him. I didn't cropped their ears because like you said, it's unnecessary, but accidents do happen and sometimes they're more painful to the dog than the actual surgery, so try to see it from another perspective.
I can't think of a canine in wild that does NOT have standing ears. Through selective breeding, humans created the floppy hound ear. When dane's shake their heads, there's alot of torque from the heavy ear and this movement can cause large hematomas requiring drainage. Cropping prevents this, but it's not why I have my dogs ears cropped, it's for the traditional look of the bred. It was a boar hunting breed. Honestly, the crop is less painful than human circumcision..
I have a male mantle that I am showing; he has a long show crop. His breeder wasn't very diligent with re-wrapping. Unfortunately, he ended up being in forms until he was about 18 months old and then progressed to naso-strips just on the tips, until he was 20 months old.
He is beautiful! if you google "RA-CA's putting on the Ritz", you will see photos of him. General rule: keep posting till the ears stand, then post for an extra 4 weeks. If you see them start to tip then re-post ASAP
Oh, and one more thing. Most ear crops will stand after 2-3 months, sometimes sooner. The crops that take 6 months plus are show crops which are pointless unless your dog has show quality markings and parents.
I was going back and forth on cropping because of clueless people like most of you making comments here. I finally decided to crop his ears for 2 reasons, first was that I planned to do it all along because of the history of danes having cropped ears and how much more distinguished they look with them cropped. The second reason was he injured his floppy ears twice as a young puppy (yes they bled and yes it left scar tissue) and realized why they have been historically cropped.

this is some serious animal abuse why the fuck would you do this this is fucking retarded ugh people like this need to seriously get a reality check and realize what fucked up things they are doing i seriously hope you burn in hell this is fucked up and a unnatural thing to do
This is very educational. I have two natural ear danes. I was considering a third puppy with cropped ears. The responsibility to the dog is not down played in these videos. After viewing these videos it helped me to decided to be responsible and pass on the cropped ear puppy. I would have liked the instructor to have praised and rewarded that puppy for standing and behaving so well. That was tough. two black dane owner in TX
I'm from the UK - why on earth do you do this to these wonderful dogs? They look fantastic as nature intended - please don't mutilate what is a truly beautiful breed. I know you love your dogs - so why put them through this wholly unatural process - STOP IT NOW - ITS SHOULD BE BANNED
Help! I tape the ears and have to take them back down in 2 days because they SMELL so BAD! It's gross. 5 days - I would never make it! Why did I do this? There has to be a better way!
Some dogs can go up to 13-15 months of age till the ears start to stand up. And the time to have the ears cropped should be around 7-12 weeks, latest 13-14 weeks. After that I wouldn't do it because the cartilage starts to strengthen.
yes it's called cropping. The ears are chopped when the dog is young and shaped with tape, then basically made to mature and grow upwards. Danes, dobermans, and boxers all have naturally flopped ears any you see with pricked ears like this, they have been cropped.
sounds like you are taping them too close together. Remember, when the ears are supported by the bridge, the ears should form a "V" shape on the head...NOT "||" The puppy should work the ears towards the "||" look when he gets excited...NEVER causing them to "^" together. If the puppy is supporting the ears without the bridge, try that for a few days, and see what happens.
Steve we have been taping our great dane puppy for a few weeks now. Thanks for the help, but how do you get the bridge to support the ears and keep them from in place. The bridge has been bending in the middle and causing the ears to pull in. How can we get this problem fixed. Thanks again.
Hi Steve, Just wanted to thank you again for this video series - my puppy is proof that it really works! He is a little over 5 months now and his ears are amazing! I am done taping them.
What size foam pipe cover insulation do you use? I bought 1/2", 3/4", and 1" last night and ended up using the 3/4" - it might have been to big though and I'm thinking maybe I should use the 1/2" size next time?
you need to guage the size of the puppy with the diameter of your "post". The 1/2" works well (window foam) at 8 - 12 weeks. I switch to the 3/4" (backer rod) at about 12 weeks. I've never used 1" posting.
Thanks - everything seemed to go well. His ears looked MUCH better than the Vet had taped them when we were finished. It was actaully kind of alarming to see how much his ears needed cleaning! Doesn't look like they were cleaning his ears at the vet. Plus they didn't give him a day with no tape inbetween.
I really want to thankyou SO much for making this video - it has HELPED BIGTIME!
I know I'll probably sound like an idiot here but what is the backer rod kind?
Backer Rod is foam tubing sold in the cement department at Home Depot. It's used in the seams between concrete slabbing to allow for joint expansion. Its' a foam rubber tube that is 20' for about $5.00. It's 3/4 inch diameter.
If you are a first time dane owner or an experienced one - and you are cropping your dane's ears - follow this guys advice ... so easy on you and your dog .... SERIOUSLY ... this is SOOO much better than the tampon method!!!
The AVMA has asked AKC to "prohibit the showing of dogs with cropped or trimmed ears."

@Miss65boo I think it's unnecessary too - generally anything just for beauty is. Leave the dog alone, unless it affects his health or wellbeing.

There should be no foul odor from the ears. Take them down immediately and take to vet to see why it's happening.

it doesnt matter ive seen adult danes getting theres taped

Danes can have their ears taped for up to a year to get them to stand up, thats why this one looks older

after the first five or six days how long do you let the ears rest?
do you tape them up again that same day?
ice4409 3 years ago
Yes. Don't leave them without tape too long if you just started taping. Otherwise the ears will be all floppy.
harp1725 2 years ago
The only way to put the ears in a V shape is only by cutting them?
please answer...

I am having a bit of difficulty finding this sports tape that you recommend. I do have hockey tape available could I use that, or is it too sticky?

hocky tape would work fine for the inside foam. I would still use paper tape on the outside.
