thank you sir. been trying to do this forever! where do you sauder/connect the wires on the magnet though? also do you just slide the voice coil over the magnet?
Dumm just get some take and paper, make the paper a cone shape .put as many papers the bigger the cone the louder. GED earphones and tape the bottom of cone to the earphone where the speakers are and play it with iPod or any music playing device. You don't need that shit in the video
im making a speaker out of a paper cup and i have the wire coiled around and everything i just dont know how to connect the coiled ends of the wire to a headphone set i have with the ear buds cut out. how do i connect the two wires together without soldering them...
@Cesar25904 You can make the voice coil out of any coated wire. For example, the guy in the video made his out of old speaker wire. But as far as where to get the wire, I would suggest some place like radioshack. They sell what's called magnet wire which comes in a variety of sizes. Once you have the wire, just wrap it around something cylindrical like a test tube (or your finger if you're desperate.) The size of the cylinder depends on the size of the magnet.
@Cesar25904 You want the coil to fit around the magnet with enough room so it can move, but not much bigger than that. The size of the wire depends on what kind of speaker you want to make. For tweekers, you want to use thin wire. For subs, you want to use thicker wire. And somewhere in the middle for regular speakers. And the same idea goes for the size of the cone.
@yuvalpelled a magnet is bically all the speaker is. the amp or sound source sends an electric current to the magnet repelling the voice coil and pushing the cone up. this pushes/moves air which creates sound waves
Since many of you are suffering making this, im gunna tell u how to make it.
1) get a neodymium magnet
2) get copper wire. it has to be insulated.
3) paper would do.
4) wrap the coil around something cylindrical.
5) put the coil around the magnet
6) take the positive end of a battery and place it on one side of the wire and just touch the negative side of the battery to the other end of the wire. you should hear a "click" sound. That means it works. Now just connect it to a speaker jack.
Thanks 110main. I guess my speaker is more of a demonstration than a good tutorial. One thing to keep in mind is that these speakers are fairly inefficient. You need a decent size power source. In this video I am using my home theater surround sound center speaker channel. Good luck guys.
i tryed making a speaker out of a cup an old R/C car motor wire and a refigerator magnet and made the voice coil is made of aluninium foil i wounded it with electric motor wire, made 2 terminals and nothings working where did I go wrong im thinkin that the voice coil goes around the magnet, if not then then tell me how to solve the problem
you do NOT need neodymium magnets. alnico magnets have been used for much longer. the neodymium simply provides a stronger magnetic field. in such a light powered situation, a significant magnetic field is not necessary, and wont provide any advantages over an alnico. the short is the most likely of the problems. go pick up some magnet wire from radio shack for 5$ and wrap a coil from that, not an old rc motor. another possibility is that the impedance is to high on the coil.
@newdreamz -i tried this, and had a few things go wrong. One, i used a horse-shoe magnet. Two, i don't know if the audio cable i sued was okay. it had 2 wires inside the plastic casting, but also a bunch of loose wires inside, i only attached the 2 wires and left the rest hanging. And lastly, it only measure to be like 1.5 ohms of resistance. Thank you:D
Hey I just watched ur video I am going to build a speaker. I have?s. A kid in my classgave me a lampshade (don't ask why) and I am going 2 make the speaker with it. Q1 Does it matter if the magnet is ontop or below the coils? Q2 Can the coils be made with copper wire? Q3 I am going 2 use it with my iPod and I'm going to take the Jack off my extra headphones and strip the insulation off the wire then I'll attach the wire 2 the ends of the coil. Will this actually work with my iPod?
1. It doesnt matter. But I would think it is easier to mount the magnet below. 2. Copper wire is best, but it must be insulated so it doesnt short out on itself. Magnet wire is what real voice coils are made from. Look it up. 3. Your ipod wont put out enough current to power these speakers. I am using my entertainment system to power this little guy. They are inefficient speakers. If you use more wraps of wire for the coil and bigger magnets the efficiency will go up.
Thank you for getting back to me. The idiots on yahoo answers didn't answer my ?s. What if I use more wraps of wire & a really powerful magnet it can work with my iPod. It's an iPod touch 2 gen if that helps. If it can't then how bout a cd player? I'm sorry if I'm annoying with my ?s. I just get really hyper with DIY stuff like this. I already made an electrical fan out of a cd, a lamp, & a flashlight. What did u use to plug it into ur computer? Thanks a lot!
How is this making producing sound, it doesn't seem possible, or even right, how did you find about it ? Can you explain what's going on inside the cone, since there are no membranes to bounce air I'm quite surprised. Thanks !
The cone is the membrane. The voice coil at the bottom of the cone is wire simply wrapped one direction a bunch of times. The speaker then is placed on top of high strength magnets. When it is hooked up the voice coil gets current pushed through it at varying amounts and directions depending on the audio source. This induces a magnetic field on the coil causing it to be repelled or attracted to the magnets. This intern causes pressure waves in the air which we hear as sound.
Thanks guys for the comments. It was a fun project. I did make a newer one with a better voice coil. I think the next project will be making one with better magnets, wire, and maybe a little box too.
if you make the cone wider (rather than such an ice-cream cone shape) and add the typical dome in the centre you'll have a much less directional speaker too (the sound will spread better)

@alexisoviedo100 as long as the wires are touching it will work, you can tape it, hot glue it or just wrap them together.

@hitachi654 - You can make whatever you want, but woofers don't sound impressive by themselves.
@vYISNIPERIYv - You can't blow it out in the traditional sense, but you could overpower it and short out the voice coil or something.

fireitup9 2 years ago
There are three possibilities.
1. The magnet is not strong enough.
2. The driver you are using is not powerful enough.
3. There is a short in the magnet wire.
Check those things and make sure you are using neodymium magnets if you can.
newdreamz 2 years ago
@newdreamz does the magnet have to touch the speaker coil in order to work ? and do you atack the headphone wire to the magnet or the coils?
perry244 11 months ago
@newdreamz you need a neodymium magnet. fridge magnets wont work

LOL WHAT?! All speakers have cones, exept transducers! LOL!
masterwolf1212 2 years ago
Some 'speakers' are just electrical arks. Look up on here Tesla coil MIDI (or music)
In my case, my speaker is a Styrofoam plate....
But I know that most speakers have cones, just not the funnel-shaped "extreme" ones. (like a snow cone or an ice cream cone)
bossoholic 2 years ago
uum also all speakers are transducers (so are light globes) but I think I know which ones you are trying to refer to tho
