  • Wow, what a wonderful video! This is Carls mom commenting. Carl had his fourth spine surgery in feb. 2011, and sadly his surgery did not have the outcome we had hoped for. During his osteotomy the doctor nicked his spinal cord because the spine is so bent from scoliosis and kyphosis. Carl is in a wheelchair and is doing PT and OT at TIRR in Houston three times a week. We are praying that he will get movement back. I have also gone through this myself when i was a child. Tks for sharing!!!

  • man, i had to go though this same surgery about 5-6 months ago and it was living hell. the actual surgery part was perfectly fine, but it was the recovery that was horrendous. even though that was the worst time of my life(so far), i'm very thankful to Shriners for completely this surgery :) very glad to see you're doing well!

  • I have surgery back in March 10th then in march 15th i know excatly what he went throw tecnhinally im still recovering but it was hard, i had a 8 hour operation then 5 days later had the 17 hour one, who ever is thinking of surgery be sure it's over 60 degrees and you really need it i have a 89 degree but just under 7 months and i'm doing awesome please feel free to message me honestly it's hard but after the pain from surgery goes away its worth it.

  • hi guys I am 20 years old and i have a kyphosis of about 63 degrees...the doctor told me to wait...do you know if i must do this operation?? please i am so anxious...if somebody knows, please tell me...thank you!!

  • Respond to this video... i had a 89 degree curve and had surgery in march, if you want to ask me a few questions feel free i am doing great since then.

  • @rshunterrs hi my friend...do you know how much degrees someone must have in order to do the surgery??

  • I have kyphosis and am in so much incredible pain. Did the surgery fix the pain? And why did he has to be on a breathing tube? Thank you if you can answer these questions.

  • i had the same back problem, i had to go through surgery when i was just a little baby, i know how you feel, lots of luck man.

  • My daughter is 16, 82 degree curve and we were told surgery is needed for the correction. Watching your video I cried, but some of them were sadness, some tears of joy seeing the dramatic improvement. Thank you for the video. My daughter meets with a surgeon at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago in 2 days.

  • @1101CigarLounge yeah it isn't like scoliosis only surgery can correct it i would find a doctor who has done this surgery in particular before and see the options, i have surgery in march to correct my 89 degree curve and my surgeon was the best i mean i thank god for him everyday what he did for me changed my life. But 82 degrees only answer is surgery.

  • Hey, I have achondroplasia and as a result, suffer kyphosis in the bottom half of my spine. I am facing surgery and have been told my spine is curved at 90 degrees. It's good to see that people are not alone when facing this, there are people out there going through the same things. I hope you are feeling better and reaping the benefits of your surgery. Good luck to you buddy.

  • @Amstarr01 Dairrien,is actually doing amazingly after surgery...Since I did this Video,I really thought that dairrien was alone in this, but I have learned about so many other people, young and old,who suffered/suffering from this... Amstarr, this surgery will help you in so many ways,Dairrien can breath more easily...and feels so much better... Good Luck on everything !!!!

  • is it painful do you feel it when they do the surgery

  • @kyleishesh No,dairrien was asleep thw entire time, the worst of his pain was the first 3 days or so...after a bout a week he was able to get up and walk around more easily....

  • Ms.Bellyflops I hope you reply to my message. My name is Shane by the way

  • good for you man!

  • I have kyphosis and i am 18 yrs old and my surgery is supposed to take place in June at the Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia,PA

  • @money7373 Have you had your surgery yet????

  • @MsBellyflops yes i did!

  • hey thanx for putting this video up. I'm considering having surgery to correct my kyphosis. i'm really nervous tho. could you tell me what it's like now that you've had the surgery? is there a lot of scarring on your back? - Paul

  • @bunghole155 hey, this is dairrien, the one that had surgery, to answer your question i have a really big scar down my back, some people would hate having it, but i love it lol, my back is straight and its not hunched anymore, i can actually breath now! i hope that answers your question paul! im sorry if i was a little late on answering :)

  • @deftonesfan96 thanx for the reply. I really appreciate =)

  • I believe I have Kyphosis too, and I get called hunchback at least once a day by someone , it really gets me sad that my back isn't straight. I look in the mirror and I get real sad. I am a very self-confident person, except for when it comes to this. I play football and am very good and run Indoor & Outdoor Track and also am very good at it. I was made it to the Regional Meet this year. I also weight lift. And I wanted to know if I get this surgery, will I have to stop doing these two sports?

  • Dearest Dairrien, I am so touched after seeing your journey through the surgery, my son collin has a 90 degree curve, his doctor told us today he needs surgery, I am so sad and scared for him, we both watched together, you are a brave young man, and we are not as scared, but we are still scared, wish us luck, you are going to be our inspiration through this...god bless...Nora & Collin...

  • Hi my names Nick, I just turned 16. Just over year ago i found out I had kyphosis, four months ago i had my surgery at 100 degrees. The surgery went great, except I got MRSA. Two weeks after that I fell outside my doctors office and fractured my back and pulled the bottom screws out of my back. I currently have a gibbus deformity (the rods are poking out of my back. Tomorrow I go St. Vincents hospital to hopefully correct everything. It reasures me seeing you do so well. Thank you. God bless

  • Hi, my name's Megan, I'm 14, and I also have kyphosis. I'm actually going into surgery in about a week, and I'm really scared. This kinda helped me, just knowing kind of whats going to happen. At the moment, my curve is at about 80 degrees. Well thank you for posting this video :)

  • @Cakenator514 your welcome! :)

  • What is the pain like, and are the risks so severe and uncommon as what the consultants say, i myself am awaiting news of my surgery date im a 15 yeard old lad and have a 75 degree curve. im all about my social life, how long was it until dairrien went back to school/started going out with frends. personally i cant imagine what he must of went through going through 2 surgerys and you as a mother, having to see him like that . . horrible, im more worried about my mum and the way i will look toher

  • im happy for you Dairrien i really am. i hope that you are well now. Physicaly and emotionaly.

Im 19 years old and ive had it since i can remember and i just found out what i had.

Im kinda scared and dont know what to do about it. Does it hurt and how is your back now does it hurt at all now. Like i guess i have kind of learned how to force my posture to look right and stuff. Do you happen to know if it can do any problems to your brain too. I have never talked to anyone about it before.

  • @chrishogan1000 Dairriens Back is alot better,no longer slumping,or hunchbacked.... Ummmm Dont know if it can do anything to your brain or not? Dairrien does have a condition called Empty Cella Syndrome,But its not related to his spine condition.... He has some back spasms now and then,But nothing like the pains he had before surgery,....

  • hey there i have kyphosis too and i look like your son when i lay down, i started with this since 12 yrs old and now im sixteen, and im getting worse over time, do you think i coul get cured of this?? and how much is the surgery??

  • @brandonvargastacvbo --If you are near a Shriners Hospital, there is no charge for the surgery..It is all free of charge.. Depending on your spine, most people have a very good outcome from the surgery and able to get relief from it..it will never be cured..But definatley can be made to where you can live a better life =)

  • @MsBellyflops thanks for the advice and i thaught there was a cure for this, so basically the rods stop the spine to curve?

  • @MsBellyflops i got 71 Degrees Kyphosis.. shit..

  • im going in for this surgery myself in 2 weeks.. im terrified.. i just wanna know if ill be able to be active again.. and will the pain definitly be better after surgery.. any answers helps thanks.. and great surgery darrien,, ur extremely lucky.. good luck with a full recovery =]

  • @watdaproblimiz I am sure you have already had your surgery, and I am sorry this reply is late..yes you will be able to be active..it does take time 6months-1yr they ask that you take it easy, start with walking, then build up to a light jog and go from there..take it easy.and let your back heal..and follow your doctors orders..thats important..good luck.I hope all is well with you!!

  • @MsBellyflops Hi how much can you bend now?

  • This is incredible. My sister is going for this surgery on June 17 and while we're all scared, this video helps me to know that her back will be much improved when it's all said and done. Thank you for posting and best wishes to you and your mom.

  • @TaraLynnT2 I wish your sister the best, she will feel so much better after her surgery..not right away of course. But a few months later she will be standing tall !! The first few days are the worst, for sure..BUT after surgery you will need to keep reminding her of whats ahead, and how different life will be.Stay on top of the pain meds Even if she thinks she doesnt need them,Take them ! Dont let the pain get out of control. Best of Luck,Misty

  • @MsBellyflops Thank you for the well wishes and advice. I truly appreciate it.

  • What a beautiful boy <3 My 16YO may be headed for the same surgery. Thank you.

  • oh wow i have to get the kyphosis surgery. why were ur on a breathing machine? and curve was greater than mine, im at 75 degrees how did u feel after? i'm just tryin to prepare myself to know kinda what to expect even tho everyone's different?

  • @MEH56 Dairrien was on the breathing maching because it was such a long surgery ,almost 12 hours long. He feels alot better, his lungs are no longer crushed by the curving spine,so he can walk longer distances. Everyone is different in their recovery, but it took dairrien about a week before he was able to walk around.I hope that helps a little !!

  • @MsBellyflops How bad did it hurt? and was there things you can't do? like jump on a trampoline?

  • Thanks very much for this video, Dairrien. I also have quite a kyphosis since I was little, and besize looking very unesthetically, it keeps me in constant pain. I was thinking about surgery, since it keeps getting worse, and your video has helped a LOT. God bless, and take care

  • God Bless you...thanks for sharing your story. My son will be having the same surgery in July and we are so nervous, but it needs to be done...his curve is 100 degree's.

  • @lisabkoole1 Good Luck with your sons surgery,At the time of dairriens surgery, they measured him at 97...And it was getting pretty bad. Your son will feel so much better after his surgery, and so will you =) I wish you the best of luck with everything !!

  • god bless you

  • BTW, who sings this song?

  • @Airox2009 Jeremy Camp sings the song..Sorry for taking so long to respond..

  • @MsBellyflops glad that is all good man bravo to you and your family

  • This is a really impressive video! How do you feel now after the surgery? Any major pain? Is your back completely stiff now? I may have to do kyphosis surgery too which scares me a lot.

  • @Airox2009 Dairrien said that his back gets stiff sometimes, but if he gets up and moved around it losens up..But its not like so stiff he cant move..He is feeling quite better after the surgery, its now 5 months past..and he is a totally different kid,he is starting to be a quite active 14 yr old =) No major pains, either just minor aches and pains...lots better than before the surgery!

  • @MsBellyflops

That is great to hear! I`m the direct opposite. No joy in life anymore. It seems that doctors in Germany are much more conservative than in the U.S.

  • Thank you for sharing your story Dairrien. I'm researching info on the surgery for my soon to be 15yr old son. Your video is very reassuring and offers us hope for a straighter, brighter future for him. Good luck to you kiddo...

  • What a powerful video, Darrien -- thank you for sharing your story. Keep feeling better and walking tall!

  • That's one amazing correction you have there Dairrien. Great video too - an inspiration for others who face this surgery. And a nice tribute to your Mom who was there every step of the way!

  • WAY TO GO Dairrien!! I am so proud of you!!!!!
