I recite this poem every time I take a school group to our National Holocaust Memorial in Washington, DC. It never fails to evoke an emotion from 8th graders they weren't probably expecting when this museum was just stop on their itinerary. It's a tremendous indictment of a world that turned its back when the information of this ongoing slaughter was readily available.
A beautiful tribute. This poem brought tears to my eyes because Peter Fischl lived through exactly what he writes about.
To us the living lies the burden of keeping alive and bright the memory of those absolutely innocent people who paid for the most evil regime that Hitler imposed upon the world.

I get to listen to him tomorrow at my school. If I'm lucky, he'll pick me to ask him a question.
