  • Brazil loves you too <3 (sorry, that`s what I got from this video)

  • Well I guess giving the Brazilian cotton farmers money is better then infiltrating Brazil and starting a military coup like we used to do. Stay classy America.

  • How come me, a brazillian nerdfighter, didn't know about this video? HOW?

  • Liberia: "TAX ALL OF THE THINGS!!"

  • u not only smart .... but hot... im from Brazil.now.American from I *lol weallbeingpuncked anyways...............

  • Why would you want a cheese burger after having to blend one of those?

  • HOLY SHIT! YOU LIVE NEAR ME! I GO SHOPPING AT THAT KROGER NEXT TO THAT BUFFALO WILD WINGS AND I SHOULD probably stop talking in caps that is annoying BUT I LIVE NEAR A YOUTUBE AWESOME-MAN!

  • Buffalo Wild Wings is slowly inching towards your ear.

  • Am I the only one who feels embarrased when John or Hank do videos, y'know, in public?

  • why cotton ? Interesting. Solar or wind maybe ? Naaaaaaaa The WTO? really? Do we subsidize them as well? Kinda like the UN. How about China's currency? Cotton ????

Interesting 18.00 for shirt????? Could it be your receiving a benefit for the cotton industry???

  • y u no wear seatbelt

  • Comment removed

  • I am a year late, but I love this video!

  • y u no watch road

  • this topic is more complex than that. i can't dispute most of the video, and i don't want to. but the part i have an issue with is claiming that americans who aren't cotton farmers barely benefit from these subsidies. i live in the ms delta. home of cotton. we're already at the bottom of the totem poll when it comes to economy (and most other things.) while most people in the delta aren't cotton farmers, trust me, those subsidies put food on a lot of tables, by extension.

  • You know, I worry about you guys when you vlog and drive.

  • Multitasking: vlog while driving. =.= Which srewing a lot of things all at once. I love you John, but be careful while you do t

  • This is big problem. The US keeps poor countries poor. I'd gladly pay much more on everything (and consume much less) in order to help poor countries' economy grow!

  • I live in Brazil since 1990!!! I was born here! lol

  • Brazilian nerdfighter here baby! re-watching this video :)

  • oooh i like facial hair on you john green

  • While he's driving you can see his eyes watching the road really quickly and then going back to the camera.

  • SEATBELT JOHN

  • At first i thought you said "hold ood adulthood is expensive" and i got strangely excited that doctor who was being mentioned...then i realized you said snood, and the excitement went away

  • Hahaha, Brazil rocks!!

  • good job displaying how protectionism sucks. it really does. stop it, america.

  • John, I would love to have your face on my torso. Or any other part of my body. Call me.

  • i lived in brazil for two years!!!!

  • John! You didn't have your seat belt buckled up! D:

  • 2:25 there seems to be something interesting going on in the background. An officer of some sort seems to be arresting a little girl for carriage hogging.

  • @MrWundrful okay 2:20

  • aw yeah, my book doesn't have feet!

  • The Vlog Brothers and Reddit, making me dislike our government a little more each day

  • this was my first vlogbrothers video. I MISSED MY NERDFIGHTING ANNIVERSARY!

  • @supercj476 HA!

  • i found it hard to concentrate on what he was saying. too busy looking around him

  • And that's how Nerdfighteria gets sold t-shirts.

  • it's nice to hear the truth about something.

    Well done.

That's why the only way out of this horrible world system and any other evil is Jesus.

  • @2MakeTheDifference haha good one

  • @2MakeTheDifference No offense to your religious beliefs, but I believe that the world needs something other than Jesus- we need the want to make the world a better place rather than the want to make it an easier place. And saying that only one religion will get us there offends millions upon millions of people. If we focus on the teachings of love instead of salvation through Jesus, we may actually make some progress. Until then, remember Christianity has faults of it's own.

  • John! You blinked!

  • The world hates America. Thanks to the U.S. has the world wars and financial disorganization. The only country that has no name, Swizerland, Canada, Indonesia, these are names. Brazil was called before the United States of America South ridiculous, and then it will not name! The Fashion is India, China and Brazil. will live there and see that we do not have racism. all countries of the world has its faults

  • @leopireslp okay, please say that again but please simplify because I understood nothing of it.

  • John why do you filter your water? In Canada and the US, the water which comes out of the tap is normally safe and healthy to drink. Save some money and get it from the tap!

  • @LegacyD3stroyer They add chlorine (to clean the water) and fluoride (...) to tap water, so lots of people filter their tap water.

  • so what you're saying is that we bribed Brazil so we could keep exporting cotton tax free?

  • MUST MAKE OPINION KNOWN TO WORLD!!! John and Hank are my heroes, go nerds! Did you know that nerds are not forced to be titled "nerds" but in fact chose to be nerds, not to mention nerds typically live a better and more interesting lifesyle. Bet the jocks are hatin now.

(In order to make this seem smart, read this as fast as possible and if you were wondering this took me around 7 minutes to write) : P

  • "Move Magic"?

  • I always feel like when John looks into the camera whilst holding it ( 0:37 ) we're all about to crash.

  • haha, I'm wearing your face on my torso too :)

  • KROGER!!!

  • @tonykilla92 the pizza John shirt doesn't really have a meaning other than the fact it's a picture of John for the brief time he had a mustache and because he REALLY likes pizza.

  • Whats the pizza shirt mean??

  • 18 FUCKING DOLLARS FOR A T SHIRT!?! That's not cheap at all! Only an idiot would pay that much.

  • @zacthebold Seriously? o.o Where do you live? Cuz I'm kind of jealous right now.

  • @Seikufu Martinsville Va. USA. A rather depressed town in the foothills near the border with north carolina. I am rather cheap when it comes to clothes. I like to shop at outlet and discount stores. The shirt I am wearing right now cost $13. But it is a name brand polo with a collar. I wouldn't have paid that much if I didn't like it so. A t-shirt should cost about 6-8 dollars. $10 max. For me to pay 18 for a t-shirt I would have to LOVE it.

  • Ahh thank you for teaching me what "I'm rubber and you're glue" (or words to that effect) means. Is it bad that that's the bulk of what I took from this video? :|

  • I'm sure this video is interesting BUT I CAN'T GET PAST YOU DRIVING AND VLOGGING.

  • Oh, wow. Hadn't known where the story went after that last appeal.

  • hmmm. how about you don't vlog and drive? good vid though

  • would that be distracted driving???

  • while watching this video i paused it to go to the bathroom. after i did my buisness i happed to look in the miror and realized my shirt said "Choose Cotton" and i thought that was funny.

  • This is why I subscribed. I learn something new in every video. xD

  • More John Money Talk!

  • "Move magic" in the annotation about driving. John, you're supposed to be the one who's good at spelling!

  • This was the first Vlogbrothers I watched. LOVE YOU GUYS! (<--- You can't imagine how uncomfortable this makes me feel.)

  • @peterjjune It's my first Vlogbrothers video, too!

  • Must resist urge to eat cheeseburgers... lol

  • LOL Does John shop at Kroger? xD

    I shop at Kroger

  • DUDE. THE PORTUGUESE BOOK DOESN'T HAVE FEET!

  • My first Nerdfighter video. It's so special to me!

  • Watching these guys is my way of studying for world history

  • I wonder what the people in the grocery store though when they saw some random guy talking into his video camera whike buying groceries.

  • lol "Every day Low price" $42.86

  • American terrorist invade soverign nation that when Bin Ladin was created and funded by the CIA. So send Bin ladin the CIA created buggy man. The only good thing about this is my country America will fall with the next few years. 15 Trillion debt will sink America and its imperial capitism. High unemplyment in America so we create a war industry and become a terrorist nation invading other nations. God help one day China is going to pull the money plug and good by America.

  • @silverton7777 you mean bye, not by, silly economy attacking person XD

  • did John just say he loves Brazil?

thats not going to go over well in Argentina xD

  • THUMBS UP FOR PLANET MONEY.

  • Holy Snood!! Adulthood is expensive!!

  • @Waterflame yes it is especially when you have to buy food!

  • Comment removed

  • @Waterflame I think that was 'adult food'.

  • WATCH THE ROAD!!!! For heaven's sake! This video made me terribly nervous just to watch... Be safe! There are easily influenced people watching this! You should be FIGHTING distracted driving! Goodness, I am overwhelmed with disappointment.

  • in alberta, canada they have a vaugley similar predicament,. the price of gas there is a dollar fifteen for a litre (ya, im canadian. so im gonna use the metric system) and a litre is about a fourth of a gallon. therefore, alberta is being charged ridiculous amounts because the gas companies claim "libya" is under stress there fore we have to increase prices. bull. alberta has the oilssands which produce a very vast amount of oil and gas. so basically, us canadians are being overcharged. >_<

  • @LastOfTheAmericanGrl

    METRIC SYSTEM FTW!!! :D

  • politics. le sigh. T_T

  • the US tends to ignor international ruling on trade(i'm looking at you sortwood lumber).

  • that was the most elaborate but awesome build up to a t shirt advert i've ever seen

  • MEANWHILE MY FUCKING HIGH SCHOOL CLOSES THE THIRD FRIDAY OF EVERY MONTH TO SAVE MONEY

    wtf government.

I was super happy about the elections in '08 & everything but I'm begining to think that all polititions are tools, companies are their wielders and we, the people, are being manipulated by those tools. FUCK (you don't swear, but I do, sorry.)

  • YOU HAZ A VOLVO JOHN!!!! :) ggggggggggGGGGGGGGGGGGOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TEAM VOLVO!!!!!

  • just vote Democrat

  • I need to start saying Snood more often as an expletive. It's far too fun not to.

  • Omg it wet from on thing to another!!! Like oh look a shirt with my face on it to I got to get a battery for my fridge then to Cotten then to Krogers o.o hehe u guy r cute but confusing oh and the only country that should scare us would be china or japan (many nt japan Any more but still) yes brazil is big but who said that we had to pay that much I mean rlly we could have come to a lower amount or something dnt cha think?!?! DFTBA....

  • @brookiesosweet Brazil is big, big enough to scare the U.S. How big? Big enough to demand $147 million per year and for congress to think it a good deal

  • just keep playing 1:39 over, and over, and over, and over ;)

  • .....I think I've been that Krogers....wow is that surreal.

  • HOLY SNOOD(sp) i like that :D

  • I wonder if people were wondering why a grown man was walking around the store talking to a camera...ahahha :)

  • Brazil is not the issue here. The real scandal is that US cotton subsidies further impoverish the people of large parts of West Africa and thus prevent them from beginning a journey towards economic development.

  • bwahaha i got bored..... sorry hehe i watched thru the wholething tho!! luv yaas!

  • How can the highest rated comments have nothing to do with the actual issue being looked at in this video? Typical. Somebody needs to change that.

  • Because of this video, I wrote a bill for the Harvard National Congress ( National level congressional debate tournament ) titled: A bill to end the cotton wars. Thanks John, you inspired me to write an awesome bill and a good authorship speech for the HNC!

  • Multiply that across the planet and it's easy to see how water & energy have brought about wars.

  • In Brazil, 1 message from activists in Mato Grosso (the Brazilian heartland) was this: "Tell the people that we're running out of water, and that it is the soy industry draining the Guaraní (the world's largest underground source of water).

It can take a ton of water to produce a kilo of grain. When it takes 7 kilos of grain for each kilo of beef it becomes easy to see how the industrial meat system exploits Brazil's groundwater.

  • can someone please tell me ho hank is =/

  • how great is it that i'm now learning about this in my developing areas class and i have john to thank for knowing what's going on in my class!

  • Dude ----5 Guys ----- Smash Burger ----In and Out -----If You Are Going To Do It Do It Right----- P.S The Gov Needs To Sub Out The Fridge Filter Industry ---50 Bucks Every 6 Months ---- Ouch -----

  • They mentioned the cotton war in the LA Times today.

I was so excited about knowing the back story as I read the article :)

  • Hey john, any chance you can cite some of your info in the description? I want to look into this.

    Thanks per usual!

  • I've started to use the phrase "cheating cheater of cheatery" way too much...

  • Harry!!!

  • You may not like it to pay for the Brazilian cotton growers, but we do and that makes us US taxpayers a bunch of suckers, what is TOTALLY OUTRAGEOUS.

  • i want that T shirt :)

  • blue guy down!

  • $18 for an effing t-shirt?

  • @komfyrion 1, speed doesn't make that much of a difference. He could still be fatally wounded. 2, Yes, they do, actually. The most likely people to drink drive are young adults, and we all know what they get up to in parking lots. 3, I don't care if he's in a parking lot. He's probably going to exit said parking lot at some point (I'm just making wild guesses here. Hurumphf.) onto a road and he wouldn't have a seat belt on. Crash ensues. 4, Shut up, troll.

  • Here is a Brazilian Fan... Loved your videos, you are great!!! Can't wait to read "Quem é você, Alasca?" in portuguese!!!

  • at DisconnTEXTed Really? Shopping local is economically fallacious, just like subsidizing cotton farmers.

  • Well done.

  • This is an awesome video but you should really shop local

  • Hey, John, when you were in the parking lot after you got your food and stuff, was there a fazoli's on the other side of the street and a hospital nearby, because, if so, then you were near a place I go to lunch at on most saturdays at around 1-1:30 pm

  • You spent your time looking to see if the background repeated itself in the part while he was vlogging and driving, since it was filmed on a cul-de-sac, instead of actually listening, amirite?

  • lolz, how do you find out about this stuff?

  • question: Where does he live? cuz idk about you but that baffalo wild wings and surrounding outlet mallish area looked REALLY familiar.

  • was it strange wearing yourself on your torso and then talking into a video camera about brazil's cotton industry in the grocery store because

  • AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

    LOOKING FOR ALASKA EM PORTUGUÊS

    i'm so happy

  • I wonder how lonely that seat belt feels? You know there's a reason they put those on cars. Its so that you can hug them around yourself and they feel comfortable... or so that they save your life. I don't know, whichever makes you happier. The point is that you should buckle up.

  • Have you been listening to Planet Money? It is awesome!

  • @JossyBishop I love that show. Who'da thunk economics could be interesting.

  • I learned all of this and more in my History of Brazil class at Northern Illinois University! Brazilian history is amazing and everyone should learn more!

  • I'm Brazilian and this guy is awesome, haha. Would be great if the US stopped these abusive subsidizing policies, paying Brazil $147million a year isn't a solution, but what do government people care about, especially republicans?

  • You blinked!!! The world is coming to an end!!!!!

  • I love the timing of this video because a week after you posted it, we started studying globalization in Global Issues with this situation being brought up. I was able to feel smart for knowing what the situation was :D DFTBA

  • Great vídeo! I´m brazilian, lived in US for 2 years in 3 different cities, and i think that make US pay our cotton farmers is not fair. I think that there should be just a little simple rule: "If mime is cheaper, than f* you, i´ll sell and you won´t."...but thanks for the millions anyway! :) lol

    Keep posting dude! Great videos!

  • PLANET MONEY <3

  • John: the penalty for not following trade agreements are the possibilities of losing international credibility and getting expelled from the WTO ( ya right, like the U.S. will get expelled, but technically it could.)

  • Type PRIZE before youtube and hit enter

  • I love BWW

    Also, go Brazil!

  • The bigwigs support cotton, because they hate hemp.

  • That's why subsidies in general are a terrible idea. The tax payer foots the bill for a niche group of people while the rest of the population picks up the bill. Which makes me think that the next stop should be to stop subsidizing Amtrak.

  • I`d like to muscle punch your nerd face.

  • so... i move to brazil and become a cotton farmer and im a millionaire.. wow thats easier than winning the lotto

  • kinda like the... low-down, dirty deceivers... who are deceiving...

  • Give in, John. You CAN haz cheezburger.

  • INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, the reason Brazil's economy developed so much is because it made an economic pact with Russia, China, and India (known as the BRIC), which in 2003 were not developed economies. This pact has also included South Korea, Indonesia, Arab countries, and Eastern European countries.

  • This guy communicate very well, but is he do not tell all history and take one side.

  • @gfnord What? From what I can make out, you think he shouldn't add his opinion to the internet.

  • I wish everything shipped immediately.

  • oct. 2nd 2007: "... Now I'm driving home, and I'm filming brotherhood 2.0 while driving. Is that safe? No, it's not safe!... Anyway, Hank I have to publicly state that I do not recommend video vlogging while driving... unless you are 9 months into a 12 month project and have not yet missed a day in that project.."

your project stopped, lay off the camera while driving!

oh and ps. like it says on your friend Katie's arm: DFTBA!

  • it is hard taking this seriously with those kitsch picts of nara's

  • hmmmm it sounds like someone listens to Planet Money :)

  • Can you safy aaah?

  • Cn you saf aaah?

  • Wow! That was wonderfully informative... as always. Thanks for another great video.

  • Wait, I'm a little confused, how much is a brazillion again?

  • This video encapsulates 95% of why two brothers making videos for each other has become NERDFIGHTERIA! It's like How to Be Awesome 101.

Discuss an important global issue? Check. Explain it simply without simplifying the issue? Check. Explain it seamlessly over the course of a day's errands? Check. Film while driving? Check. Expensive to be an adult? Check. T-shirt? Check...Love you John! Love you Hank!

    DFTBA

  • brazil was the only country smart enough to sue us, and big enough to scare us.

  • i have that same water filter :)
