very cool machine, but still, just a new way of generating sequences..having one tiny instrument to produce all the sounds that innovators worked so hard to program is insulting! is this the future of music? Cant we discover new sounds?
It's more about finding different, more accesible ways of making music. Everywhere you look we are moving towards simpler, more hands on interfaces for music-making. The Tenori-On is similar in concept to the Reactable.
I understand the tangible part, im all for that. I own a couple of Korg hardware myself. (hate computer music making). But i like the reactable more then this thing :)

ummmm does anyone see the error in your statement besides me??? Tenori-On IS Japanese........which could be the reason that it looks japanese.....just a thought.
I guess people hate this thing because they can't afford it. I can't afford it either but I still think its one of the coolest instruments I've ever seen. If I had the spare cash I'd definitely buy one.
I don't hate it cause it's expensive I hate it cause it's f*ing obnoxious to look at. the monome has real style, tenori just keeps flashing like an epileptic nightmare.
the monome requires knowledge of apps and synthesizers and is only an interface...the tenori on is aesome because anyone can start doodling around and make some cool stuff
so can my grandkids(make NOISE) with just pots and pans..a dog whistle--and a cow bell..MORE COW BELL!!!.I have a few sequencers--and tone generators-Boss digital recorder, and a Ensoniq "Mirage" sampling keyboard from 1986, but wouldn't spend $1200 on this
People are such morons. I am an electronic composer and I think this thing is awesome. Anyone who says "go spend time playing an instrument" clearly does not understand that the skill of playing an instrument is far from creative, and that the actual creative expression comes from writing songs, not playing stairway to heaven to try and look cool.
It's much more worthwhile to spend time to learn an instrument and learn to do something that not everyone can do, than to pick up some computerised electrical toy and do the same sort of thing that anyone could do.
tenori-on seems less suited for the professional, and more suited for someone like myself, who wants to create cool compositions, but doesn't want to dedicate my life to learning compicated computer software and musical instruments. i'd mess around with this for hours on end, definitely a device for the 21st century.
In some respects, or genres, I would have to agree with you. I find myself listening to talentless middle aged men that still try to sell c.d.'s to angry high-school kids simply because they know how to play the instruments they hold instead of just recreating an already overrated guitar riff.
If you have a look at "boots got a new toy" and "little boots READY FOR THE FUN!!! hot chip tenorion cover" you can see the potential this thing has. But flag the price, eh?
2. This can be as legitimate an instrument as anything else. If you think you're going to get anything half decent just by pressing a few buttons, you're mistaken.
Again, I typically do better when it's not my first 5 minutes on a radically new instrument. For comparison, everyone is welcome to check out some of my music (it's on my channel) or my site garykibler, that Sony Pictures used in an online game or the BBC used on their popular "Top Gear" tv program. I certainly agree this is not of that calibre, but then again, I did spend more than 5 minutes on those.
i think it's pretty good for your first tenori-on composition. this device is simply amazing, i really want to to buy one. do you know when it will be available in the US? I can never find a clear answer on that. thanks for posting this videos!
the title is a bit tongue-in-cheek. I certainly wouldn't own one, not for 600 pounds anyway, and the point was this was done in my first 5 minutes futzing with it at one of the demo stations at the launch party. I'm actually a Pro Tools user myself.
for approx £100 more you can buy the latest version of Logic, maybe for the same price. invest in that and make some real music.. more then just blip blop blip blip blop. bouncing blip blip blip blip blip blop. have fun with your toy kibler
