I guess it's because the location he plays is very small. He could hear the echo of his voice because the location isn't really equipt for so much equipment - two guitars, one bass, one keyboard, on drummer and a lot of percussion- and it echo's very well over there. That's why.

I watched this on TV, and it was great. The best part, as I remeber, was a child calling in and addressing Bowie as Mr. Bowie and requesting a song. He's a private person, isn't followed by the paps, protects his family from the media, and this was a rae glimpse into his life as it is now. It used to be much more public.
