@GirlWithCrappyGuitar Because the episodes are strange, sometimes confusing and hard to understand, sometimes make no sence, and mainly because the idea is delivered in a heavy way.Plus they never actually repeat thoughts and facts like in the other animes.They just tell you once andthat's the end of the matter :)

The shadows represent the instability of the definition of Lain's "real" world; where shadows and things seen in the corner of the eye cannot be surpassed as entirely real.

well...actually one of the theories about Lain's existance is that she was created after Protocol 7 was introduced into the Wired, in order to combat Masami Eiri's plans and keep the Wired from becoming it's own little world..As for how the PHYSICAL form of Lain was produced...well,most likely a clone of Iwakura-san or Eiri or perhaps from an 'outside influence' beyond the Wired's power.
