  • the petrol engines today would cost £10,000 to fill up the tank ,in the war they would fill every other day ,

  • I USE TO BUILD BOATS LIKE THIS -WITHOUT TORPEDO TUBES- BASIC HULLS WITH DECKING- HELM- ENGINE STRINGERS- OPEN FRAMING, A- 3 MAN TEAM OF US COULD PUT OUT A HULL IN ABOUT 6 WKS ; I'M CURRENTLY LOOKING FOR PROPERTY CLOSE TO WATER AND GOING TO SET UP SHOP;; BELIEVE IT OR NOT BOATS ARE NOT REALLY THAT DIFFICULT TO DESIGN OR BUILD;;IT'S TRING TO APPLY OWNERS ORDER / WISHES / WANTS THAT MAKES IT ROUGH !!! GREAT LOOKING LINES AND VERY IMPRESSIVE SOUND; RR

  • Great to see it, I used to play on this boat as a child when my dad owned it, its alot smaller than I remember it.

  • has this been re-engined?

I can hear a turbo or is it just me?

  • @tpvalley . yes of course, the originals were petrol. I doubt what you can hear is turbos at those tick-over rpm.

  • yes on larger diesels u can hear the turbos even at idle, my main question was trying to establish whether it had diesels fitted or not?

  • oh right .... well they're dirty great Cummins diesels. Originals were Isotta Fraschini 57litre petrols .. three of them, then Perkins and currently the Cummins 600HP each.

  • @MARTINSMITH1001

You sure can hear the turbos, especially at 6:35 when you started up to exit the lock. They slowly wind up to idle speed by about 6:41. :)

  • @MARTINSMITH1001 The stern launching system was not successful , probably because you were dropping the torpedo into churning water with only primitive course setting+holding systems in the fish to stop it " Running wild " and I believe that ramp was removed fairly early on , which must have made for more room below to wrestle with the engines - the vestigal remains of the ramp is the space between those two big boxes on deck aft .

But that original layout meant she only ever had 2 engines .

  • @tpvalley it has a turbo

  • I also know her from her time on the broads. She also appeared in the film "The Eagle Has Landed"

  • I belong to 1st Blofield and Brundall now, i've never seen the boat, only heard the stories...

  • I spent many a Thursday evening scrubbing clean this lumbering tub back in the late 70's when it was owned by the Brundall and Blofield sea scout group on the Yare in Brundall near Norwich UK. So good to see it again

  • aint she beautiful ?

  • too bad you brits didn't go for the packard engines, like us yanks

what a sound & fast too

  • I sailed on this boat when I was a Scout too. Happy memories

  • My Grandad was a CPO in the Royal Navy on MTB's during WW2..

Sadly he died 22 years ago, and I never got the chance to record any details about his Navy days.. all I know is that he was in the med and north african area..

I'm just glad he got to serve on somthing as cool as this...

  • She's a very dignified old girl

  • my grandad served on mtb 612. he is still about if you want a word.

  • My grandfather was chief engineer in one of those during ww2, they used to go flat out towards german battleships and then launch the torpedos, bloody insane!

  • I know what I want for Christmas :-)

  • Nice to see that some of the 'ole' WWII 'DOG BOATS' are still around.

  • A lovely film, thank you.

I served aboard MTB102 as a Sea Scout in the late 1970's & early 1980's when she was owned and operated by the 1st Blofield & Brundall Sea Scouts in Norfolk. Many memorable days spent cleaning her and taking her for runs up and down the River Yare.
