  • would have looked cooler, if you'd have planed the wood panals down to about half a mm, so that the light can barely shine through, but that would be a huge waste...

    great project though!

  • Woooooooo New Zealand.

  • Ha! It's like I have a woodworking twin on the other side of the country. I'm not as forthcoming with my mistakes though. Handsome little lamp and well worth the extra effort.

My wife is a knitter and when she makes a knitting mistake and has to unravel her work to the point of the mistake she calls it 'frogging'. I hate to think of all the projects I've had to 'frog'. I have one now as a matter of fact.

Great channel. Glad I stumbled upon it.

  • it kind of looks like a bathroom stall, not in a bad way

  • nvm i saw the ending lol

  • do u sell any lamps/?

  • LJ rocks!

  • nice project, glad you should the screw up. i learn the same way.

     all good

    buzz

kauri is pretty cool wood , but like you said looks rather plain

  • Oh! Now that is just fantastic!

  • Just magnificent

  • 1:35 The Wood Snifferer! Is it my imagination or did almost everyone give you advice (and/or correct you) on your how-to video?

  • i cant go that slow on my router cus it burning wood, instantly. Bits are new and sharp, so i dunno, too much power? =/

  • You should really make an insert for your dado blade.

  • where can i buy the really old wood?

    thank you

  • Great looking finished product. I think using that 50 000 year old hardwood for this lamp was a perfect idea.

  • 1:38 you say it looks like pine.... and i can tell you no because pine has grains in it and this wood sounds like a hardwood. And pine is better for the ba-b-q then a pc-cabinet 1 can tell you that. Plus i guess you have a better wood over there to make a lamp because of the heat....pine would bar-b itself after a while :-p

  • Stevinmarin, I liked the lamp, but I think the light is not enough, maybe if Japanese could penetrate some detail, like a bamboo or something, the more light would come out and would be much better, this is a translation of google translator because I'm from Mexico and my English is not very good but I love your videos, Greetings and please be sure to upload videos, learn a lot

  • oo, i love the lamp, you did a nice job on in, despite the first..... slight mishap, it came out better than i expected

  • LOL. I hear people say if I was you all the time. It's so boring to hear people say it. It seems like some of the time small projects can be the hardest.

  • Beautiful job Steve. I just love it when people say if i was you. If i was someone else i'd just kill myself, lol.

  • @MrLeonard55 LOL, I'm not so sure anyone would want to be me!

  • @stevinmarin

You should see my garage I'm already you twice over but with more sawdust and half as many clamps

  • what i would do if i was you is use small pieces of wood to cover the screws to make it look better

  • @myfaceback100 That would totally work, as long as your magnets are strong enough. Great idea!

  • I think if I ever made a lamp like this, I would put rice paper in the spaces. My mother who was Japanese, would have loved it. And I love your videos and your mistakes. Just shows you are just normal (well, somewhat, lol) and I am just a beginner at wooodworking so I make a lot of mistakes. Some of which are happy accidents, because it turns out to be okay....

  • @ladyb003 Yeah, I thought about something like that. Another option would be to add some frosted plexiglass.

  • Lance sent me here.

  • im from nz

  • Thank you for showing the poor lap joints... us mere mortals can identify.

  • Steve ... I am a Kiwi living in Australia ... I love your lamp but HATE the way your pronounce KAURI .. It's pronounded COW RE. Now say the 2 words together and you have COWRE = Kauri.

U Dun good by the way. Cheers

  • unfortunately it looks like a trash can. still a good job.

  • Yeahah! New Zealand ftw!

  • Very nice! :)

  • Really nice project, but I hope you figure out a simple way of covering those electrical connections... children and dumber adults are sure to find them otherwise.

  • Love the Light box can i get Plans so I can make some?

  • Steve, thanks for using timber from my home country! Have a go at using Rimu (re-moo). Or even better head on down and I'll show you around.

  • Remember when you could watch a video without a commercial?

Remember when music videos were uploaded by users and not VEVO?

Remember when all the info was to the right of the video?

Remember you could rate a video 1-5 stars?

Remember the famous yellow subscribe button?

Remember when the users controlled the site and not corporations?

    WE MISS THE OLD YOUTUBE!

Post this in every video and channel and lets start a youtube riot.

Thumbs up to keep at top

  • One thing that scares me when I watch your videos is when you use your dado blade wide open. You have a router, a bandsaw and other tools in your garage. Why not make a throat plate for your tablesaw out of UHMW that will accommodate your router set? Just a suggestion.

  • Nice project. If I remember correctly, the aroma you found off of the wood probably smelled like turpentine. Kauri trees were some of the first trees to be used for making turpentine.

  • have you ever used cocobolo wood?

  • Good looking lamp Steve. Just from looking at it on video, would it be worth trying to get light coming out of the bottom as well? That might look cool. Probably couldn't happen with the ceramic light fixture.

  • Super nice project, Steve. Thanks for teaching me to square up my projects! ;)

  • in a way this project looks similair to the entertainment center and side cabinets im making in my high school shop, ill have to send you some pictures so you can check it out!

  • Good to see you again. como siempre buen trabajo :)

  • Very nice.

  • That's pretty sick! It looks very nice!

  • ever thought about making a wooden clock?

  • Watching your potcasts reminds me of watching The New Yankee Woodshop. If you watch the very early episodes of TNYW you see Norm using Craftsman tools. By the final episodes he was using state of the art tools. The point is our skills developed along with Norm's as he expanded his. You are taking up where Norm left off. Thank you for helping us learn.

  • nice project!

  • One more thing. Is there a cover for the contacts on the bottom? It doesn't seem safe to just have 110 volts out in the open like that.

And it was cool of you to get Cristopher Walken to say "wires" at 7:44.

  • Could you mount a small half dome mirror on the underside of the top piece to disperse the light instead of it being absorbed by the wood? Also, maybe some rice paper could be mounted in the openings for more diffuse light, and a more traditional Japanese look. Great job though. My dad always reminds me of Level Plumb and Square. A mistake you won't soon make again.

  • Even if you feel the ancient wood doesn't look too different from pine, I bet you can tell the difference in how it feels. Plus, just knowing it's there definitely makes it special.

I really enjoyed your minimalist design for this piece, if brings a lot of attention to the wood itself instead of fancy cuts and decoration. Another awesome video!

  • Haha I know the situation when you totally mess up, despite being fully prepared and planning everything.. It has something to do with 'to much' focus, and you start to miss totally obvious stuff... I stopped most planning BS, and just start the damn project. Btw, very good that you used oil instead of hosing that beautiful wood down with a can of lacquer!

  • It looks like a trash bin.

  • thats a very cool lamp Stev =D

  • You should make holes into the wood panel to produce more light.

Can you one day try to make a wooden lampe using diiferent wooden-pebble piled up together like some design lampe. It's won't be difficult just a matter of time for sanding all the shape ! ( We all know you love sanding ^^).

  • I like that wood feller to the rescue LOL

  • @RockinGuy1994 In this case it wasn't enough!

  • @stevinmarin LOL

  • Great Lamp ;o) You might consider to make a protective cover for the electric in the bottom. It look like the two sockets where the live wire is screwed on are exposed when the lamp is tilted. Would make children and animals very much alive for a very short time if they got in contact with those.. But you might of cause have done something not shown in the video that I am missing.!

  • @HOOKEDONWOOD Yeah, I capped it with a little box.

  • How did you manage to free the old wood?

  • Great good I think you did a great job on the lamp!!!!!

  • Great Job on the lamp Steve looks really nice

  • Great Job on the lamp Steve looks really nice

  • The only woodworkers who never make a mistake are those who make the same thing over and over.

  • Great project Steve! I was going through withdrawls cause there was no project last week!

  • @jasonmusic1 This project's snafu was the reason why!

  • Nice lamp, Steve. I think I'd have tried to do some kind of scroll pattern in the panels. or maybe rout out something but only go through about 3/16", leaving about 1/16" of wood for the light to shine through. Or maybe leave only 1/32", just enough to let it glow with the light from behind. Or rout it all the way through and then attach a thin piece of material on the inside to diffuse the light. I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud here. I do like using magnets holding the top on.

  • Thank you for not only 'biting the bullet', but also for being so open about it. It would have been easy to edit the video so that everything comes out nice and square on the first go. Bit that would be a lot less interesting. Now the video is a great example of how to handle a mistake like this. Respect!

  • Great video, furniture would be nice, a thick wooden table good for drinking some beers on would be a nice build ;)

  • That turned out great.... good job any chance of some medieval style furniture next with some simple inlays?

  • Its cool but it looks like a garbage can! :)

  • Great use of that treasure. - I would hate working with a really special piece of wood like that ancient piece you used. The problem is that it would reduce my ability to enjoy my beer. I wouldn't dare take a chance on messing up such a rare wood find. When working & drinking beer, I don't worry much about stuff like fingers & eyes or life but to mess up that piece of wood, would be a SIN! - As usual, I enjoyed your video & the unique project, THANKS ! ! - BEER & TEXAS ! ! - Oh yea, & fine woods

  • @specialks1953 When I work with scrap pine, I tend to be less careful with it, yet I don't usually screw it up. Go figure!

  • @stevinmarin - Yep

  • How many people are going to leave their beer bottles on it... until one day one falls over and makes a mess...

    :(

  • @shadowblack1987 Oh no! A spilled beer!!!

I guess the mess would be unfortunate too.

  • Wow that's awesome! :D

  • Love the project Steve, but I gotta say... when I saw the final product I thought it was a miniture trash bin at first. ;)

  • Never cease to amaze me Steve. Great job! Your videos are so great. ~ ssmdad on lumberjocks

  • great work! but i have a small recommendation, lose the normal lamp and get one of those energy saving white lamps instead, since this project is all wood it'll be ruined by the yellow lamps heat and/or may catch fire!

    great work though, keep'em coming

  • @3amolabib It is a CFL bulb...I should have shown that better. I actually found little miniature ones. Pretty cool.

  • Really elegant project. One of your best.

  • Wow :O. looks heaps good!

  • really nice project Steve

  • Very nice project, but what happened to the wood ladder thingy? have you made to work.

And one other thing I made that band-saw box as a Christmas present, whit some modifications I added something to put a candle in.

  • Oh, no! Grasshopper must now commit the ancient ritual of Seppuku!.....kill yourself for fucking up that square.

  • Steve, I must say my friend this turned out very nice. Such a great project for such special wood. OH YEA, dont forget to check for square...LOL... Great job.

  • ha! couldn't help it. I can't do any more projects since I graduated and I have no machines... here I come adulthood
