Cenk is a moron, but I think he thuroughly explained the problem with government as a whole without knowing it. The truth is, the US Financial Regulations is one of the largest, most oppressive, and costly. He is talking about adding a couple more regulations, but the regulations on the books are thousands of times larger then his snippets of what they could do. Adding more has merely allowed big banks to prosper and create bigger monopolies while small ones fail conforming.
The thing I thought was funny is he is making a great argument for conservativism and lower government regulations. If the government did not lend out money, then they could not rob the taxpayers of that money. If the fed did not have stupidly low 0% interest rates, then they could not borrow at 0%. If the fed did no gauruntee loans, then the banks could not make risky investments. Good argument for Fiscal Conservatism from Cenk of all people.

1st, the Fed did not guarantee the loans until AFTER the banks had made them and the loans imploded.
2nd, the banks made the bad loans because they were ALLOWED to move the debt off their balance sheets. They were (and are) leveraged to the hilt.
Canadian banks are more heavily regulated with less leverage. No financial problems in Canada.

@troolz Loans were guarunteed by Freddie and Fannie which lead banks to make risky loans. Freddie and Fannie are ofcourse psuedo government agencies. In the last 2 years they went from insuring the loans a little to insuring the loans alot.

@mastgrr Actually, you are wrong on both counts. When a bank fails, the FDIC takes it over and makes sure the depositors are taken care of. We will never have another Great Depression like we had. Second, when you tax a bank, you are taxing the customers of that bank. All those taxes are passed on to them through fees, or high rates of interest. Finally, stop blaming Reagan for this mess. When government forces banks to make loans to avoid being sued, then you have a problem of bad loans

Great Depression was inevitable.
Economy needed to readjust from the overheating, as did with the rest of the world. It saved America from a total debt shitload, like what USA is suffering from right now. If anything, those banks need to fail and we need the depression NOW to prevent greater disaster.
Regulation that they created were often ineffective until Roosevelt implemented EFFECTIVE regulation/jobs/and infrastructural improvement.
What Reagan did was horrible nevertheless.

We must end the socialism before it destroys America..It is so sad. I am trying my best with the tea party rallys but even my friends who consider themselves anti-socialist work for the government!! Most at a city/county/state level but it's all the same and they dont see it! Just as the sin is worse when it's known to be wrong and you still do it so is socialism wrong when you remain employed by the city! It's incredibly disgusting to those of us trying hard to end the socialist menace.

I have a problem with people in the "Tea Party" that use this 50's rhetoric, because it just distracts from the real problem. @DarkwingScooter Not technically possible? The entire country is so steeped in socialism it's hard to escape it, If you can t all!! The roads, the very streets we live on are lousy with socialist programs for poorly educated people to hold jobs. That is why so many weak people work for city/state governments. They could not hack it in real world. So they become teachers or dogcatchers to feel like they are helping when actually they are pushing America further and deeper into communism, Sick.

Idiots need to stop thinking in extremes and seeing things black and white. There are social programs that shouldn't be and there are social programs we could never live without.
