Watching these behind-the-scenes type videos of Glenn Gould, I'm always relieved to see that he seems to have been a decent, down to earth (relatively, as much as I can hope for from a super-genius) guy. Finding out that a hero of mine was/is a jerk is a bummer. I can't get enough Glenn Gould.
Man, that dude on the console had no fucking clue what Gould was getting at. (Further, you can tell he didn't like being 'commanded'. Wahn.) And yet, to all those in the previous decade or two who'd been involved in all sorts of electronic music, this was very basic, common-place.
In this video we see how an individual with a superior ear capability and deep understanding of the musical structure of the Scriabin compositions gives instructions to a regular guy who obviously seems embarrased of not understanding the difference between scrolling sliders 1,2,3 or 4.
That's hilarious. Not to diminish his "Genuis" but...I've done several sessions with major classical artist and I would be furious at the end of this session, he's reaching into the engineer's workspace, considered offensive to an engineer, but the guy seems fine with that-but still pretty ridiculous if you've ever balanced classical music. That said, I do like when a person knows what they want and saying that he knows what he wants would be an understatement -- So why don't YOU mix it Glenn?
it´s well known that glenn gould downgrated every sound engeneer, because he took over their work.a.kadzdin,a famous american engeneer wrote a book about this fact, and there he is very upset.but probably Glenn was the greater sound-expert!;))
i don/t know how strange gould was. i *am* amazed these videos are out there - great ! i have the gould 80-cd box set on the way, so i/ll be listening to gould for quite some time. what amazes me, though, is the apollo-age recording equipment. haven/t seen a mixer thtat small since, well, then. imagine what gould could have done w/ garageband ! love the scriabin (but the berg vids are my favorite). thanks !
rwmartin, the 80 CD box set is excellent, you will enjoy it. The liner note, often written by Gould, are v. entertaining.
I find it very sad that Gould didn't get to live to see our contemporary digital recording technology. As you say, imagine what he could have done! (Maybe in 30 years people will be looking back at our "advanced" technology in a similar way, though...who knows how much is possible...)
Since you mentioned Berg: do you hear touches of Scriabin in his Op 1 Piano Sonata? I do.
i can't wait for the cds, but that will be 2 weeks off. i have the glenn gould reader book, which has many of his liner notes in it (as well as some eassays that are at times plain weird). i am not nearly as up on the scriabin as i once was, bit i can see your point - i think it alot because gould *understands* berg emotionally the way few pianists do. i have the DGG berg set, where the sonata is played by barenboim, and it just sounds dry. thanks for all ther great work.
I'd say that "strange" is a term used by those people (past and present) who fail to comprehend that.
It's the same as when people stare at a painting and fail (or simply don't want) to delve into its meaning but rather they just choose to blast it as being a bunch of doodles (because that's all that they, personally, possess the mentality to recognize within it.)
McRat1968, that is very well put. I think most (maybe all) people who are able and willing to approach life with an open heart and mind might be regarded as "strange" simply because they are open to such a wider variety of human experience and understanding than those who choose to simply write off a painting as "doodles," etc. There is so much more to the world than what the "conventional" view comprehends.
Is he playing with "wet" and "dry" sound, sort of with and without reverb? I am not getting it...
shilloshillos 8 months ago
@shilloshillos I think listening on these silly computers does not do justice. But the term wet is good, 1 is wet and four is very distant.

'This music' is likely older than your grandpa, and more visionary than your unborn children.

Glenn could diva all he wanted to long as we got to hear his playing and have his great recordings -

gould is certainly a bit of a diva, but as divas go, he's ok. he's picky, particular, but never unpleasant.

So does anyone know which album this very recording was released on?

Pure Genius! Gould is conducting the producer, the mixer and the end result of what he wants Scriabin to sound like, Unreal!
I miss Glenn!

I'ts marvelous how he seeks so hard to achieve perfection! Just look at 1:18 to 1:23)-wonderful and hilarious too.
How extraordinary man he was! This year, september 25, will be his 77 birthday.( Clint eastwood has 79, Boulez 83 and Levi-Strauss 100...)
I'm sure, wouldn't the death grabs him so soon, he would master all our modern technology and I daresay what results comes of his!
We miss you, GG.

He's a rather strange guy. I knew that. But after seeing this, there's no question he's extremely strange! But he seems very open minded!
