The Uechi Ryu 6th Dan who performed it in my dojo admitted and demonstrated that it had 36 moves. It had a FEW similarites to the Goju form. My instructor had nothing to do with the conversation. It was with the Uechi Ryu instructor and we merely discussed similarites in kata names. Sanchin being another kata done by both Goju and Pangai Noon. How Pangai Noon is often described as the "sister style" to Goju Ryu.
COLEMANDINA: You are foggying the water further. Uechi and Goju-Ryu do not share "Sanseru"...The other katas are "related" but Sanseryu is different kanji and meaning. (RYU) is dragon in this case and is completey different. (San Shi Liu (CH.) Kanbun Uechi called it Sandairyu when teaching in Wakayama. Mr. Baur--Shito and Chito-Ryu are vastly different. I would like to talk to your teacher. He is doing you a disservice. Kudos for dedication. You'll find it.
I am hanging up my belts. Chito ryu is a ryuha unto itself Chitoses' teachers were Chomo Hanshiro, Seisho Arakaki, Chototu Kyan amd Motobu Choyu. The closest she ever ame to Shotokan is that Funakoshi and he has a common teacher in Arakaki. Tenshin is listed as a Chito kata but it aint Tensho. Tensho was developed by Miyagi. Sorry Mr Coleman but a Shodan should know better. MT
Yes. Shito Ryu and Chito Ryu are not close to the same animal. I know a fair amount about both systems, and have had Bill Dometrich sensei (Chito-Ryu-Thousand Year Style) here in Columbus going back to late 80's early 90's. Offshoot Yoshukai (Japanese) with Matsuo Mamarou Yamamoto has a lot of members in my area as well. BTW--Dr. Chitose had some blood relationship with one of the early pioneers of Matsumura Seito.
I read Bill's autobiography. Dr Chitose was old school and it took Biil a few visits to get to be a student. This was a guy I would have liked to meet along with Konishi Sr.
Actually Chitose was adopted by his wife's family and changed his Okinawan name of Chinen (related to the Chinen Yamane Ryu family)to his wife's name of Chitose.
I'm sorry...you seem like a sincere guy. I was saying, "Oh Dad!" as if "didn't you know I'd be about my Father's business?" Dad...Bad joke. But seriously...Their is so much misinformation that you are getting from your "teacher" and here too. YOu can feel safe listening to N.E. BUDO or Vysokij...and...me ;-) We're here to help.
We are a group of Goju Ryu practitioners with a combined years of practice at about 100 or more. We are telling you that this is a made up form and not a Chito Ryu kata.
Sanseiru in both Goju Ryu & Uechi Ryu are true to the name, 36 hands. Both have 36 movements. Just the name Tensho didn't seem to apply to the form? Are you sure it's called Tensho? Some times at tournaments, people mishear Sochin & Shisochin!
You should look at You tube's other Tensho kata and see if yours matches them. Yours looks like a free style kata. (do not give any credence to the Shorei Goju kata Tensho that one is laughable)
Sanseru does not have 36 movements. However, it does mean 36 hands but has more of a Buddhists philosophical meaning. 3 (san as in sanchin) multiplied by 36 (seisan) yields pechurin or suparenpai (108 evils in the world). It has nothing to do with the number of steps. Uechi called his Sandairyu. Unless you under stand the kanji; you do not understand the kata meaning.
I thought Tensho meant rotating palms? This looks nothing like anything to do with the description. I know Goju has a TOTALLY different Tensho. However, Uechi Ryu has a different Seisan, Sanseiru and Sanchin to Goju. I said nothing derogatory. I just was surprised this was called tensho and not what I expected to see after seeing the Goju form.
Oh I see. Don't worry. I didn't take offense to what you said. I was just surprised because you were surprised because of the kata. Different styles could do some katas completely differently as you mentioned. That's perfectly understandable.
SHI from HigaSHIonna and ITO from Anko Itosu, but hey, a shodan would know that eh?
Colemandina 4 years ago
So Mabuni created Shito Ryu. What about Anko Itosu and Kanryo Higashionna?
Colemandina 4 years ago
NWKORYU .... what's all this "Shodan should know better" meant to mean? Of course I know Miyagi developed tensho. I knew that over 30 years ago.
Colemandina 4 years ago
Dear NWKORYO. I know Tensho was developd by Miyagi. Who's a shodan and what's that got to do with the situation?
Colemandina 4 years ago
That's just MT's endearing way of saying that any shodan in Goju would know that Miyagi created Tensho.

What? Tensho?????
Colemandina 4 years ago
It's a kata from the style Chito-Ryu (also spelled Shito-Ryu) of Karate. Is there something wrong with the name "Tensho?"
Baruyr 4 years ago
What lineage does this so called "Tensho" originate from?
NewEnglandBudo 4 years ago
It's a kata from the style Chito-Ryu (also spelled Shito-Ryu) of Karate.
Baruyr 4 years ago
Chito-Ryu also spelled Shito-Ryu? I understand that Chito-Ryu was founded by Chitose and Shito-Ryu was founded by Mabuni.
