If you listen carefully to Ant´s songs, you may find many of the Genesis songs soon to come in his early compositions, for example Musical Box, or sections of Supper´s Ready. Since he left I band i missed this clear, liquid sound he plays so munificent.
My own preference for Genesis would have been for Ant to have rejoined the group after Steve's departure in 1977. Since the band only wound up doing five more albums, anyway, I think it would have tempered the poppier Phil Collins stuff, and allowed them to put out more stuff and have a chance to survive beyond 1997. AND Ant has done so much, he could still have a thriving solo career as well. Alas, it wasn't to be.

The Beatles didn't have a single talented musician. McCartney wrote some good pop songs, but musically there was very little merit in anything they did.
"Lights On The Hill" has always been one of my faves of Ant's, but this is the first time I've seen him play it. I never thought he'd be playing that far up the fretboard - also, he plays 12-string in a "classical guitar" position (footstool, etc.). Wonderful piece.
I guess he's far from poor (& maybe his family was/is quite well off), but from reading interviews seems he mostly works as a 'hired gun'...much of his musical output is of the 'made to order' type, or 'library music'. Seems it's something he does out of necessity rather than choice. (When your fingers do the walking some people will look on & conclude you've not in fact gone anywhere. ;-)
I know what you mean though... having seen pics of his home studio I wish I had some of his work tools
Ant has a tremendous amount of material to sort thru....but if you're a fan of astonishingly beautiful 12 string music I'd highly recommend Private Parts & Pieces V:Twelve....It's all 12 string and it's all mesmerizing....got mine from iTunes
Does anyone know what tuning Ant is using on this?
This is absolutely beautiful. I've been a Genesis fan since the beginning and always respected Ant's contributions....sadly, I've overlooked his solo material. Being an avid 12 string guitarist, and seeing this video, will cause me to search for and buy everything I can of Ant's. Thanks for posting this clip.
ant may be the best composer in genesis(i think tony might agree), ant is very rich in ideas . many of his solo songs can easily become great genesis songs,(have you heard the musical box in its raw origin , i mean it is a piece that ant plays on his guitar like any of his other great compositions.i adore steve hackett, but after 20 years i realize the uniqueness of ant, and the importance of his friend mike rutherford.
@amirhamra Ant is an extraordinarily gifted musician whose timeless compositions have become part of the fabric of my being. Like yourself, I am ever more realising the huge importance Ant had with Genesis. I'd go as far as saying that without Ant, there would never have been the Genesis that we came to know. A seemingly beautiful man also, we have to thank Ant for introducing us all to such wonderful music.
Hackett was never anywhere near as good a songwriter as Phillips, listen to Ant's solo Albums for proof of this and also the Genesis Archive box set, they are both similar as guitar players, but I don't thihk that Genisis would have made it if he stayed in the band, that said if he had rejoined when when Hackett left that would have been incredible,

Ant made a fairly good effort with Genesis, he is a good guitarist, but, please, it is impossible to make a comparison with the great Master of the classical Genesis compostion Steve Hackett, sorry guys, but Ant is not part of the yearning and dreaming that I have of having Pete, Steve, Tony, Mike and phill together once again for a great concert, and of course a new album, it doesn't matter if they want to call the gathering Genesis, but please GET TOGETHER ONCE AGAIN and please your fans.
Wonderful guitarist.. and also it looks like the man who discovered the fountain of youth-he looks exactly like he did in the 1970's!
I always thought it would have been cool if Ant had re-joined Genesis after Steve Hackett left- he could have filled out the sound so well, and steered them into more of a balance between the lush instrumental stuff and the pop stuff. Oh, well...
It really bothers me that nobody includes Ant or mentions him as being part of a Genesis reunion. I would like to see Gabriel, Collins, Rutherford, Banks, Hackett, and Philips on a stage or in the studio recording new material together. I wonder what that would sound like this day and age?
This is my favourite Ant Phillips composition - could listen to it all day every day ! Sublime

There's no doubt most of Ant's music has a soft spirituality that we're all fortunate in in this life to enjoy. Especially with those we love.

Anthony Phillips: a man condemned to make interesting music that only a lucky few ever hear.

Only The Beatles ever had so many gifted musicians in a single band. Amazing! Anthony is a really good lyricist as well.

Nope. This particular tune is on Private Parts and Pieces IV - A Catch At The Tables.
I have so many fav Ant tunes that there's no way I can pinpoint just one tune. Just about ALL of the 12 and 6 string tracks are spectacular!
