  • the bass kick is totally wrong; listen to Paulo; go to school!

  • if you are Brazilian you heard balsa nova drum beat?

  • he starts playing a bossa rumba

  • Why did I click on this video?... I HATE BOSSA NOVA!!!! AAAaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh

  • expert village?!?!? whoops, wrong video...

  • Pretty bad lesson to be honest. It's not informative or insightful really. However, the beat isn't wrong, he's just playing 2-3 instead of the usual 3-2.

  • I hate that this video is the first video suggestion on MY drum video's page.

  • I bet Lars lives in this Expert Village

  • were going to be learning how to plat a bossa nova drum beat ( 2 seconds later) now that we know how to play a bossa nova drum beat

    LOL

  • .. I've been playing / practicing bossa nova for about 4 months and already I think I;ve got the bossa nova sussed out better than this..

0:58 is a bit shabby in that its more of a rock fill

and well, co-ordination should have been there to keep the ostinato on the bass foot at 0:53

I think I learned more from reading what patton303 wrote below

Now, I dont know your skill or drumming history or anything about you, but this aint a good lesson mate :l

  • I love these "teachers" that don't actually show anything.

Anyone that watches expertvillage and wants to be a drummer should just pick up the Groove Essentials DVD (or book) and be done with it. At least Tommy igoe knows what he's talking about...AND takes the time to actually TEACH what he is playing.

  • comic book guy! worrrrrrrrrrrrrst frum instructional video evvvvvvvveeeeeerrrrrrrrrr

  • @Blink182DudeRanch u my friend have not seen enough expert village

  • This is closer to a Samba than a Bossa Nova... and it's not even close to a Samba!

  • good, !!!

  • you.suck.

  • Nice drums...Maybe spend some more money on drumming lessons?Plus looooooooose weight....

  • is expert village trolling???

  • I don't mean to be a dik, but that's not a Bossa Nova groove. At all.

You're playing more of a combination of a Samba and an 1/8th note rock groove.

Hat accents (called the Clase) should be on all "and's". Sometimes with opens on all the "e's". It also can be played on a tamborim or guiro.

    Left X Stick should be : 1 & e ah e 4 & :||

    Kick is correct.

    peece

  • haha i love the comments on these videos, its a masterclass in venomous insults. "hi im meatloaf and drumming has always been a secret passion of mine"

  • My old car used to misfire more rhythmically than that.

  • get a diet fatass!

  • 0:58 que merda é essa

  • your beats off man, that's not a bossa

  • guys! he's talking about the "bossa nova" button on his casio. i say its a brilliant interpration

  • the drum kit is rubbish tune it up

  • are you listening BOSSA NOVA before????

  • it's not bossa nova!!!

  • I bet you're feenin for a hamberger right now.

Go have a snack for me now.

  • The important thing in any Bossa Nova, and Samba for that matter, is you can't be heavy handed with the groove.Think of the feel in "Girl From Ipanema."

Don't take on the whole groove yourself. You're only one component. The other percussionists ,guitar and bass complete the picture.

    Very simple and dynamically down.

  • @patton303 the lovely thing about the original cut of girl from ipanema is that about 70% of the time all you hear is the hi hat. the syncopation can really come from the guitar or drums, if both are pounding it into your head it simply loses the whole vibe of the bossa.

  • @untitledtopher

    werd...

  • thanks fat boy. that helped a lot

  • hey, fuck you. that is straight up, NOT a bossa nova!

  • dude u look like a nice guy but just go home

  • can you do that

  • The section in which he teaches you how to play the bossa nova beat is missing. He's not that bad compared to the other "experts" at expertvillage though.. they should call it "amateurs teaching beginners" village.

  • hahaha nice

  • Agreed

  • hmm prolly thats not a "bossa nova" but i think that the beat is kinda complex, i wanna see the guys saying that he sux, do that beat.

  • I'm a brazilian drummer... And I think that your Bossa is quiet stronger than it had to be.... Abração e Continue tocando!

  • When watching this watch from 00:00 to 00:20. LOL

  • I think you are a very nice guy, but to say you paly "BOSSA NOVA"" no way dude!

  • ashuahsuahsuahsuahsuahsuas(lol)(cell)

  • i wonder how many chairs he broke in his life time

  • the first second or so of this video is hilarious.

  • Complimenti!! Sorry I'not speak english!!! I' love song jazz drum!!!

  • haha

  • haha i think the name expertvillage is compensation for something :P...

  • nice guy !

  • JAJAJJAJA GORDO Q LOGY!!!

  • He's the best jazz drummer in expert village^^

  • oh there´s no smooth feeling

don´t play the bass drum like PUM PUM

  • Why do they call it expert village when there are full of noobs?

  • @TongueSnap To be an expert, you first have to be a noob.

  • you dont play drums... you arent musician... you dont have "touch"...

  • there is a bit Crush sound between snare n hi hit. well you keep on the timing, cheer up!

  • This is not "learn how to play a boss nova beat", it's "watch me play a boss nova beat, with terribel timing".

    Expert village?! My fat arse...

  • cant you play harder?

  • haha!! when you stop it at 00:20. lol!

  • Muscovee - Absolutely hilarious!! Can I be in charge of torture once you've overthrown the "village"?

  • Should had stayed in Afganhistan.

  • I want to live in "expert" village. It seems like a really easy place to overthrow and set up my revolutionary government based on not sucking.

  • @Muscovee that was great bro

  • hahahaha...LOSER :)

  • I didn't learn a damn thing, what the hell were you trying to teach me. You did a very small fill that didn't match the dynamics of a bossa nova, that is all I saw.

  • cmon guys, give him a brek. for me it looks ok. atleast they share something than nothing. Thats the basic bosa beat. I think the beat i ok, but the drum sound is bad.

  • u suck

  • i leanred something btw... tnx for posting this vid... crapy snare....

  • a really good drum machine would be easier to learn than the drum kit

  • yeah but then you wouldn't be playing the real thing, it's just like a nerf vibrator, it's just not the same.

  • but drum machines produce a distinctive sound

  • very very like you snare =)

    and...

pro mark stik millennium 2?? :p

i have thes in my hand now =)

  • Let latin music for latins... lol :P

just kidding.. keep on playing mate!

  • Hey just a nice comment to say your not playing it right .... sorry mate you have it wrong!!!

  • man, the bass drum is on the and of 4 and 1, you have it all wrong

  • Comment removed

  • wow you dont know what youre doing. guess i shouldnt expect much from expertvillage though

  • that is not how you play a bossa nova, you have the bass beat reversed. Its not fucking rock!!

  • I am Milton Banana and I invented the Bossa Nova beat. You need some work sonny.

  • those drums sound like pooooooop

  • That snare sounds rank

  • expert village uses the worst people

    good on you though champ

  • Você tem que comer muito arroz e feijão ainda!

  • the snare drum hit at 0:49 sounds like a dying cow.

  • The guy isn't teaching people how to play shit here. He is simply throwing out the idea. I can play better than this guy, but, I can also appreciate what he's aiming for here. I'm certain this guy would love for someone to be able to learn what he's showing and play it back better than what he's demonstrated.

  • What the f is this guy doing putting a video up on the internet, when he cant even play drums!?!?! IF you want to know how to play bossa nova, listen to a record called GETZ/GILBERTO, by stan getz the amazing sax player who popularized bossa nova way back when... enough of this terrible video shit, this guy sucks dont listen to him, listen to the people who actually made the music on the records.

  • good vid

  • lol. Stop the video at 0:19 xD his face

  • lol, I did it. that sh*t is funny.

  • hahahaha its a jack black face

  • lol, that devilish look...

hes like saying i'm gonna eat you...

  • LOL

  • try to stop at 00:20 and see what i mean!...

  • hahhahahahahaha, i see, he, looks like the big ghost of the ghostbusters xD

  • That was funny.... >:|

  • Expert village idiots..I've never heard so much rubbish from so many different 'tutors'.

I play 12 instruments and have taught and played music prof. for 25 years. It's such a shame that learners get to listen to this half - assed crap...

  • ok then, where's YOUR tutorial then?

  • whoops, redundant.

  • can people please stop mentioning the snare. it's not brilliant but it's not the problem in itself. he just hasn't bothered with any kind of tape on the snare head and so on. Could use a bit of tuning and some moongel... and then it'd be fine.

  • if your gonna post a vid pleeeeeeaaaasssseeeee use a decent kit or borrow one for the vid cause all these vids of people playing their shitty kits are screwing all the beginners up and makin them think that that is what it is supposed to sound like.

  • people that are mediocre drummers need to stop posting bad videos like this...just listen to that snare. IT SOUNDS AWFUL

  • your face sounds awful douchebag

  • soooo..... if (your favorite drummer here) was playing that admittedly bad sounding kit he would be a "mediocre drummer?"

  • he should be accenting the hat when he plays the crosstick on the snare.

  • Thanks quite useful. I think all these critics should shut up and post there own videos! Well done for having a go.

  • dude.. I'm so sorry. You really need to get a non-shitty set.

  • YOUR SNARE SUCKS

  • asteeeg!

  • sorry man...

but snare hit at 0:49 made me rofl -_-

... did u make that snare urself or something?

  • nah he prob didnt just a shitty snare i have that snare too *sighs* it sucks

  • what kind of a snare is it??

  • uhm an excel so it sucks. idk why i said i have that same snare uz i dont think i do. Im not a drummer or anything but i know my snare sucks

  • not to rank on this vid or anything cause im not the best drummer or maybe im not hearing something but, this version of bossa does not sound anything like bossa to me. maybe hes playing it very str8 for the lesson but it has no rhythm to it per say.

  • yeh. It is possible that you are being confused. Not your fault though, because this could defo be played better.

I think to teach the bossa, you need to make clear the roots of it and also, which type of clave your going to play on it. You can play the son or rumba clave on 3 2 or 2 3 with that style of bossa nova. I only watched the vid once, but i think i remembering him starting 2 3 son clave. And also, the accent on the (1) to finish was quite rough. ACCENT ON 4! lol

  • That groove is based of of the song Girl From Ipanema.

    =P

  • You cant spell. Ha! Self ownage!

  • YES

  • Overtones like crazy on the snare Dude !

  • his bass sounds like an extra snare, but good lesson.

  • ill give you a fiver for ur kit mate

  • His left hand JUST about makes the timing, almost out of time.

  • is that even a snare??? haha

  • Boooo. Your snare sounds horrible. Tune it/get new heads and dampen that shit. Bass is WAY too heavy.

  • Okay you need to work on your bass...too heavy...Try my class Cintia Orlandi

  • Give the man some cred, its just an instructional vid not a fucking solo.

    Keep Drumming man!!

  • your snare sounds like butthole no wonder you use the rim...

  • YOU WOULD HAVE A HUGE WANG A LANG!

  • HAAHAHAHAHA. What does that even mean. That made me laugh so much. thank you.

  • this sucks, fatboy

  • 0:50 WHAT THE FUCK WAS THAT?

  • lol, seriously

  • a rim-miss, lol

  • yah! dat was weird! :|

  • yeah, what the fuck is the hole thang?!

  • your snare sounds off tune!!!!!!!!! but the bass is alrite!

  • heyy thats is wrong fat friend jjejeje, oye gordito eso no es bossa

  • man you dont know anything about bossa.you play it like rock.bossa is urban music, and is very sensitive.you must play it very quiet, because the main instrument is acoustic guitar, often with naylon strings.bass drum play du du only when the song is in climax.you must fathering bass drum, and play quarter notes.somethimes without bass drum.rhythm create with brush and rim click,or light sticks.brasilian music dont have clave, only cuban.rim click improvise on melody.

  • lmao i have the excact same iorn cobra basse peadle as you but mine is a double kicker

  • hahaha hopefully i dont see nxt time:)fatty

  • thanks mate!

  • The bass sounds alrite

but your snare sounds to alittle off tune if you play from 0:56 to 0:58

  • that set's sound is terrible!

maybe (cough cough) 'expert' village should do a tuning lesson!

  • I am an experienced drummer.

This is the fourth drums lesson by "expert village" full of mistakes that I see.

I hope no young drummer will learn Bossa in this wrong way.

The first thing to teach is "Bossa clave", the real heart of this rhythm.

Similar to "son clave" but not the same, can be played in 3:2 or in 2:3.

Clave is played by left hand.

No matter if you play ghost notes, tom toms, triplets etc. but NEVER STOP CLAVE RHYTHM.

    ---

    Excuse my bad English. ;)

  • Young drummers, please,

you have all the Web at your disposal.

Do search in Google for a basic drums partiture (sheet) of Bossa Nova.

It's easy to read, easy to play and absolutely correct.

And it could be a good day to start reading drums sheets.

  • cant find one

  • is a really simple tutorial, but is nice and practicle, thats what matters. thanks.

  • WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! The BASIC Bossa Nova rim click IS (over 2 measures) 1, & of 2, 4 / 2, & of 3. That is the TRADITIONAL BASIC rim click. It DOES NOT START on beat 2 of the 1st measure. Learn it before you try to teach it.

  • you are right.

the really basic is euhm... well i know to write and play and such things but cant explain it here =D cheers !

  • Sure ya can. Makes me think I should start doing some vids.

  • there are two main ways to play BN. starting on the one or the two.

  • It would be good if he would have counted before playing at :32 as it was not explained that he used a 1/8 note pickup note on the bass drum. The 1st note of the 2 bass drum notes was a pickup note OUTSIDE the 1st measure and BEFORE beat 1. Another thing, snares should be OFF when playing this rhythm. Also, it's important to learn this rhythm with right hand using a brush swishing 8th notes right to left then left to right on the floor tom with a coated head on the tom.

  • Wow... every single video you made shows nothing, no offense

  • that snaredrum sucks! but you have explained the basics of a bossa nova well!

  • yah, that snare is loooooose

  • ur ''shanshee''? :D

  • snare doesnt sound too good...

  • im using ride and it looks cooler

  • On my Bossa Nova i play it with the Ride and add some high hat beats throughout it to give it more feeling and make it a little more difficult

  • same :)

  • love your bass drum ...awesome keep it up

  • what tempo is this?

i dont play drums but this tempo works great with my guitar riff

  • wtf the sound is too bad :S

  • you are such an idiot! he's teaching something and you are watching it, sit on your chair at home criticizing it and offending him. if you want to show that u don't agree, do it politely.

I find the video pretty useful, thanx

  • douche baag

  • Sorry for you... and apologize for him. i thought u liked the one Mr Peter Ersnike showed, Mr Vinnie Colaiuta, Mr Steve Gadd and Mr Alex Acuna. also Mr Dennis Chamber. please take the names i gave you in order and you will see why. be carreful, always listen ...not look what they play. i am sure you will enjoy and learn at the same time. Chau

  • as much as an asshole mozambque is I think he is right, bossa nova is not rock and should not be approached the same way as rock. I do not think this guy is a good teacher becasue he did not break anything down or even tell us how we should be approaching it. he was just all "thins is how you play it. ready go"

  • cool name

  • ummm sarcasm? haha
