The person on the receiving end of ground strikes is unable to defend him or herself as well as if they were standing and there's more momentum striking downward then normal (straight forward).
Though, I am a fan of Pride rules because I like a good brawl, I prefer the UFC rules because they prevent injuries, in a way, and prolong careers. (Though, foot stomps have yet to be banned but need to...)

The last time Wanderlei looked anything like his old self was his last fight with CroCop...he was still agressive as hell in that fight, but once he got KTFO, that was the last we've seen of his old self. Every other one of his fights, he's been timid and taking his time, but he's meant to seek and destroy.
