  • Terry Pratchett is a great author with novels filled with not only a stories but with LIFE...

...I can't think what my life would be like without being found by Sir Terry's books... like 'Going Postal...it was almost as if Vetinari himself was seeking to talk to me...

'The second interesting thing about angels, Mr.Lipwig, is that you only ever get one.' - Lord Vetinari pg.25 Going Postal

  • Science fiction! terry pratchet= coolness

  • I think he's right. Anyone can be a writer even if you have no education or you belong to a lower class than the average writer, you can still be a professional writer. I mean, as a fanfiction writer and reader, I have to say some people who write fanfiction are very much convicted to writing them and take writing almost like a real job. And things like fanfiction does help to develop your writing skills and can help you as a budding author.

  • His storeys are always interesting, but there is always so much filler.

  • My favourite disc world novel and my all time favourite book is Night Watch- I just love Sam Vimes

  • fhis books need to be read twice, first for the fun, second for the message. There is a depth of knowledge about human nature that is easily missed. BTW, I think my favourite is Going Postal. I Shall wear midnight might change my mind. 3/4 through it, and enjoying it immensely

  • I have read quite alot of his books. it would be hard to chose a fav but if i had to it either be Going Postal or Mort

  • "all called Ted". Must be TEDtalks

  • Terry is the best author on the planet!

Im a jeweller and i spend my time at work listening to his books and i ended up making:

    Rincewinds hat

    A Discworld sign post

    Moists hat

    Death of rats scythe

i made them all out of silver but youtube won't let me post the linkto the pics!

  • @lynall really...huh? are selling..I would love to death of rats scythe aww..or him as a cute little charm hee

  • @PFXProductions nah there not for sale. I am giving a couple to an alzheimers charity to help out a bit. I'll send you a message with a couple of pics of them.

  • Good logic, Terry.

I hate it how a lot of people in this world see authors and celebrities as gods. They're not gods they're human beings and i do not idolize any of them or see them as being better than me.

  • @ShroudedFury : I rather more people idolized authors than some guy who can kick a ball really good but could not string two words together properly to form a sentence; or some gal whose claim to fame is to repeat 2 sentences repeatedly and call it singing.

  • @ShroudedFury - Although when you say 'better' . . . . I'd openly admit Terry is a much 'better' writer than i'll ever be (by a long long long way!). I don't idolise Pratchett but I do regard him with some awe, mainly for his written achievements. His books blow me away.

  • @ShroudedFury i sort of agree.. i dont think that as "humans" (whatever that means), celebrities are "better" than me.. but through what he does terry pratchett has had one of the most profound impacts on my life, almost to the same level as my friends and close family. So for that i think he is a special person, and im sure many would agree with me :)

  • I remember watching this interview on telly a while back and it's a shame there aren't more bits of it available. A comment that particularly tickled me was Terry stating that during his youth, he'd written a short story which mixed Tolkien with Jane Austen, and that his favourite part was "when the orcs attacked the vicarage". Lovely, typically Pratchetty stuff.

  • He never stops being witty. Sportjackets named Ted, gotta love the classics.

  • I think the first real science fiction book I can remember reading that made an impression on me was a book named A spectre is haunting Texas. Ill let you figure out the author...lol

  • Fanfiction is a terrifying thing.

  • True, but you love it. Or at least, I love it.

  • I'll admit, some of it isn't too bad.

But most of the time it's the author's attempt at wish fulfillment.

And then there's all the perverted ones!

    Sometimes it's a case of so-bad-it's-good.

Although the writer's that actually do something creative while still remaining faithful to the characters is the best.

  • I agree. I personally write fanfiction myself, and try to always be in that last category.

My favourite type of fanfiction is crossover - good crossover, of course, where the characters react as they ACTUALLY WOULD react to the other characters from the other worlds, and the plot is, if not original, *almost* completely original. There's actually a few good Discworld ones floating around crossed over with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

  • Yes its is, but there are the occasional gems.

  • my first Discworld book was Witches Abroad, and I just loved the book and film references; they made me want to read more! After that, there was no return.

  • i love him, my fave discworld book is probably equal rights but i still have about 10 to go

  • Great vid.

    Terry Pratchett is a GAWD!

  • OMG, I've read one of this guys books. The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents. It was funny and witty, too bad it was the only book I've read in his diskworld series because it had Rats and I like Rats

  • He's a genius.

  • It is quite sad that he has Alzheimers. In a few years maybe longer he won't remember the impact he had on so many people!

  • Nope. Alive and Still Kicking, just struggling to get his ideas down on the page - which must be maddeningly frustrating...

  • what the hell are you on about he is not dead!!

  • he does do something amazing with his work tho

and that he can pump out books like he does with each one being uniquely interesting is amazing

  • Sir pratchett is god....except without the crocodile head

  • Mr. Pratchett writes books that are sooooo enjoyable to read

  • Having had the honour to have helped host Mr Pratchett at a year in New Jersey I had to love this one!

  • I have 4 of his books, and enjoyed every minute reading them.

  • read his others, you won't regreat it!!

He's a brilliant writer and I always look forward to the next book! I've 6 books and 2 maps signed too!!

  • which particular "group" of his do you like e.g. the guards stories, the witches stories, Death stories or the stand alone ones like Small Gods or Moving Pictures

  • My favourites are the Death Stories, unfourtunately I've read all the current ones. I also like Making Money and I'm planning to read Going Postal as soon as I can find it on one of our many bookshelves.

  • I trust you've noticed how Death turns up in almost every story. Just as Nobby and Colon turn up in most of the stories that involve Ankh Morpork.

I think my favourite pieces with Death are when he drinks his way through the bar, when he starts watching Rincewind as a hobby and when he has a "near Vimes" experience in THUD!

  • damn, I'll have to admit that I love reading the stuff with the guards, but then, Granny is just so brilliant. (You also read wee free men? Great!) Then Death is brilliant. I giggled for days every time I thought about Death and curry the first time I read that book! As for the (sorta) stand alone books, I love a book of his when I just can't put it down!! Ohhhh that's just about every thing he's written! Did you read Going Postal. Had me in stitches!

  • Loved Going Postal and Making Money.

    I also liked the Truth

  • The first book of his I read was equal rights, I'm glad I read that one first rather than the ones he'd written before that, as I wasn't as enamered over them. I liked them, don't get me wrong, but I might not have gone loopy to get the next book if I hadn't first read equal rights. Terry got better with his writing as he found his stride. I'm so glad that I'll still get to read more of his books! I'm hoping the tumeric works wonders for him and we get many more books from him in the future!

  • I read Guards Guards, then went back through the others, as at that tme Guards Guards was the latest book. Ever since then I've been hooked. I know what you mean about Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic, they read differently from the rest. However, Rincewind is a brilliant character and the first two books just become a foundation point for his developing charm - giving reasons for his cowardly nature and lack of magical finesse... I'm hoping we get many more books, but more that he is well

  • @Madmonkeymusician I read Thief of Time first. That pretty much decided me on reading all the others I could get my hands on. Then I read Thief of Time again and realised how much better it was now I was older and had read all the others... ah, cycles.

  • I like the Vimes/Watch stories the best. Feet of Clay is probably my favorite Discworld novel.

  • My favorite book was Going Postal.

  • Well, Spellbreaker34 and I both are fans of Golems, apparently. :D

  • @voidnothing Yeah, I do love those stories. although I think my all-time fave is probably Night Watch.

  • @arwenae, Nght Watch is without doubt my favorite.

  • "to be admired by others"...or not, flaming is a terrible thing.

    I'm reading Reaper Man now

  • Realy love his books :) the stories are so twisted :P

  • gotta love terry pratchett
