I hear what you are saying & have had the same experience. Incredible value no doubt. For me, the National has the edge for overall tone. Not saying a Republic doesn't have amazing tone of it's own. I've always loved that National sound, but Republic is quickly closing the gaps and issues with the $300 guitars. I've been looking at a wood body Dobro "Hula." Those guys are a lot less $ than a comparable National, but much better built than the Republics. That's just my 2 cents worth. Thanks
@thmpick Yep, it too is a Republic. I was checking out an old 30s National at the same time and for the money, I couldn't go National on that one! LOL A third of what they wanted for the National and it gives me just the sound I want!
Mind if I ask how much these things cost? Do you think if you upgraded to a National Hot Rod Cone that it would then have that bark some people think is missing? I think it sounds pretty darn good!
@thmpick They run around $250 - $375, depending on where ya get them. I've been thinking about upgrading the cone...just haven't had the time to seriously research. I think it sounds pretty good myself (thanks for saying it though)...but I still prefer my tricone. I've always been a tricone kinda guy at heart. Thanks for watching!
@sawabojo A bit. Still has a nice tight tone. I use it mostly for open G tuning stuff...sounds great for it! In a live setting, it could have a little more bark...but that's what microphones are for! LOL
damn that does sound good ( but Im sure your playing helps that). I just got a National M2, and I love it and have no regrets , and trust me, I compared that price LONG and hard! I have 2 republics and love em but that particular National is one Ive been pining for for a long time. The bang for the buck on the Republics is tremendous though. Again, great playing!
@JamieOue Thanks man. I do like Nationals but being a pragmatist (aka CHEAP! lol) I hate the thought of spending a couple grand on a guitar. Part of the fun for me is finding something in 'my price range' that I'm gonna love. I have a blonde 1960 Gibson 175 that I got for next to nothing...just by waiting and looking around. I have 3 Republics now and LOVE em! Thanks again for the kind words. Got any video of that M2?
@hastyfishbone yeah I posted a couple vids of it recently, if you click on me theyre righton the front page. Im a pragmatist of sorts too...I promised the wife that my 1 other REALLY high end guitar, a PRS hollowbody, was going to be up for a sale when I bought this one. Now of course Im trying to sell her on getting rid of a few cheaper guitars instead! The M2 has the Highlander pickup system too, which is pretty pricey, so I feel I got good value. my republic tricone is always out though!
