Our family of four probably spends close to a thousand pete week on food because we shop organic exclusively because we believe it is best for our quality of life. However we budget. I could see how a family of three could spend 1000 per week I they ate out some, bought organic, and didn't budget.
@ZenEsprit He has every right to criticize her. She is arguing that a family can save money by using disposable plates at dinner instead of buying more expensive washable plates.
A 12-pack of 10.5 inch diameter dinner plates sells for as little as $18. If the family buys two packages (24 plates total) for $38.00, they break even after just 13 days. That leaves them with $1057 in their pockets after just one year and $1095 for each year after that. Some bargain hunter she is.
People are making fun of Donna for her shopping, but buying sale items in bulk is the way to save money. That's how my mom fed 5 people the whole time I was growing up. The things she buys are things you will always need.
@zelliej86 Conceptually, buying things on sale, in bulk is a fantastic way to save. My family did that when I was growing up and I do this too w/ things that I know
I need.
The problem with the mother here is that she doesn't seem to register that if you have a shower full of toilet paper, then you don't need to buy MORE toilet paper just b/c it is on sale. By the time you start running low on toilet paper (or even when the show is half full) that item will have gone back on sale somewhere.
@zelliej86 I don't think they're saying that buying in bulk is crazy...it's having a whole shower full of toilet paper and buying only paper plates for dinner that's going too far
You'd think that all that dust that is collecting on the knicknacks is causing severe allergy symptoms in the Fontaine family. I really feel sorry for the kids.
@Boobalopbop - a thousand dollars to them is what 150 dollars is to average people. When you can buy top brand foods/imported foods and expensive restaurants, the amounts just add up very VERY quickly.
My dear lord... The hoarder mom really should see a doctor. Her need to buy everything in multiples whether she needs it or not and hoarding things 2 CAR GARAGE, and shower full is ridiculous. The dad seems to be a reasonable guy, I'm amazed he'll live this way.
You really can't compare how much money you save not using paper plates. Not only is that money spent buying new all the time, but the amount of waste that creates is terrible for the environment.
It's not saving money when you can't use it all! My philosophy is to make a list and buy what's needed for the WEEK, exception, toilet paper, I always have an extra package... can't be caught without it! LOL
how is it possible for 3 people to spend $1000 a week on food?? My husband and I spend that much in two months, if that. I don't understand how that's possible...
Clearly, the tiny mom is a hoarder; I think it's good that someone is willing to step up and clear that away even though it's just a temporary "fix". It's going to be very telling to see how she reacts when she gets home if the rich mom has cleaned up.
why can't the pack rat family have a garage sale or something, seriously with 20 years of stuff sold in a day or two could bring in plenty of cash and free space which is obviously a win/win situation.
I'm hopeful for the blonde girl. When the Dad said in the last video that "We don't have the same emotional needs [as the packrat mother]" he clearly doesn't acknowledge that his own daughter DOES have those needs. She knows what she wants for a relationship with her parents, and I hope she gets it.
That rich dad is so annoying! i HATE when people think they're so right and just repeat themselves over and over. you're WASTING money. you're not saving you're WASTING money. you're WASTING---*gets punched in the face by me*
from what i learned, if u save money, that might just put u into debt. but if u spend smart, then that'll save u. i can't exactly tell what the horder mom is doing. spending smart or straight up saving.
OK, so there's no personality in the house, but here's a thought: If your personality can be adequately represented by some tin-foil stars and a boat load of cheap, festive tat, it might be best to keep it hidden.
I think Donna needs professional help. Buying cheap shit you don't need isn't saving money, neither is using paper plates because you can't be arsed washing up. She's a child basically, she can't even work a cooker FFS!!
omg, getting rid of a hoarder's stuff without them around = huuuuge mistake. what donna really needs is cognitive behavioral therapy. i'll be shocked if she doesn't hoard worse than ever after this.
The children have been indoctrinated into this life style thinking that this is normal, so of course they will be defensive about decluttering their mother's house.
Donna is out of her mind. Ya she is deep-down a good hearted person. But so are alot of skitzophrenics and crazy's. Donna is WAY WAY out there. fun, and cool ya, crazy definetely!
just because poptarts are 10 boxes for 10 dollars- doesnt mean you have to spend 10.00 on poptarts.....1 box for 1 dollar is ok....i want to shake that lady
I think she thinks that way because she has 4 kids. But, she's totally got it wrong. And, if you're going to be a stay at home mom then take the time to learn how to cook at least 10-20 good meals. On the plus side for Donna, her kids are solid. You can tell they know who they are and are comfortable with expressing themselves. Ellen's daughter is in obvious pain. No doubt she will be materially successful but she's emotionally stifled. I hope they all learn and heal from this.
i totally agree with you about Ellen's daughter being emotionally stifled. her parents probably feel money = security- they can afford to put a band aid over everything. ellen really talks down to people-
she relies too much on money to serve her and thats setting a bad example. what will her daughter do if she finds herself without money? has her mother ever taught her to be resourceful?
I was thinking the same the last time I went to the grocery store -I look for sales- but I also bring my calculator and do the math myself to ensure that I'm actually getting a deal. Lot's of people see "SALE" and just buy, when all the store did was put "sale" on the price tag...
