Obviously this isn't to everyone's taste (and I don't want to spoil your fun) but it's pretty poor stuff, even for the late sixties. It's difficult to imagine why would anyone want to hear this again.
There are two levels of psychedelic music. The first level are songs that have vocals in them that pertain to psychedelia i.e.Tales of Brave Ulysses, byCream, Journey to the Center of the Mind, the Amboy Dukes, Good Morning by Steve Miller. The second level is music that actually aids you in intense galactic tripping. This would be Astronomy Domine, The Narrow Way, Saucerful of Secrets, all, of course on Pink Floyds Umma Gumma. If you are tripping hard enough, you cant hear or understand words.
As a teen, I listened to The Doors, Beatles, Airplane, Hendrix, The Nuggets and Pebbles compilations etc, but once you've graduate from that stage and if you desire a real trip and you really want to hear mind-blowing Psyche, check out the early Mothers of Invention, The Spoils Of War and The Silver Apples. As far as Neo-Psychedelia, The Olivia Tremor Control and The Circulatory System Have A Peaceful Day All!
I think the poster was showcasing the obscurity of the tunes above, compared to the mainstream acts that always come to mind when people think about the 60's, particularly Psyche. The songs listed are Psych Pop and I have to agree with a few people, not my cup of tea but, it's a start for those truly interested in the genre beyond the mainstream shit. I agree with @Victorcorpsebride & @SteveAstronaut. It's about quality not rarity and dare to be different, be weird & ok with it.
1. I'm Only Sleeping - Beatles 2. My White Bicycle - Tomorrow 3. Eight Miles High - Byrds 4. Today - Jefferson Airplane 5. Dark Star - Grateful Dead 6. Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix Experience 7. Itchykoo Park - Small Faces 8. Bike - Pink Floyd 9. Country Joe and the Fish - Section 43 10. Madman Running Through the Fields - Dantalion's Chariot * Flowers in the Rain - The Move * Time - The Chambers Brothers * Nobody to Love - 13th Floor Elevators * Shapes of Things - Yardbirds * take ur pic
The problem with using unknown 60s bands is that they didn't define psychedelic music. The "unknowns" sound great, but Jefferson Airplane WAS psychedelic and Country Joe and The Fish. The latter was one of the first bands to usher in psychedelic. Check out "Section 43"

@Victorcorpsebride - "Firstly, i know more about music, than any person commenting on this joke of a video" here in Australia we'd call you FigJam - Fuck I'm Good Just Ask Me. If you can't communicate without slagging off on people and you think you're so superior then why comment at all? Anyway thank you for taking the time to show us all what an arrogant opinionated tool you are. Have a nice day no go back to your mirror and admire yourself.
@dyvelsten Hey man, I dig your list! and victor if you hate every one of these songs, your taste in music sucks, so who gives a shit what you think. post you own list, clown, and let idiots take pot shot at you.
i saw this video to find some new tunes from my favourite age of music, and i got what i wanted :) thanks a lot :) subscribing and love your channel :) keep doing this great job :)
great video dyvelsten, i hate how other idiots dont get the point of this video, youve introduced me to alot of great bands. thank you keep up the good work!
What the younger people commenting here don't realize is how much influence the local bands in California had on the mainstream "big bands" of the 60s. The Brits were still doing 50's style rock when the San Francisco sound came along and they soon copied it.The psychedelic style was very anti-corporate, the music was written and developed by the bands, with no direction from corporate music directors and producers. Phil Spectors "wall of sound" style, used by the Beatles, was held in contempt!
@PandaBoo92 Read what I posted above, the Beatles and other Brit groups, were famous for their version of American style Rock and Roll. In fact many of the earliest Beatle hits were covers of American classics: "Hey Mr Postman", and " Twist and Shout",for example. The Rolling Stones did "Tobacco Road" an American blues classic. The Animals did "House of the Rising Sun" which is an American folk song. It wasn't until the late 60's that the Brits broke away from their corporate masters!
@KarmicJuggernaut Soft Machine was mainly known as the Canterbury scene, some similarities to actual Psyche, but quite different. Both are not from USA anyway. Cheers.
good selection i thought would be complicated to chose a special group cause the american spychedelic has the biggest production in this kind of music around the world , i didnt mean say another countries has not as well many great masterpieceof spychedelic music
I like how people are acting up as if these ten were THE ten and ONLY ten songs that are the coolest/best in the 60s. People need to just relax and enjoy the music.
I don't think that you can compile a list of 10 songs that everybody can agree with, but I admire that you are willing to put together a fairly obscure list together, including a few bands I've never heard. Thanks.
Interesting list. But shocked there is no mention of the 13th floor elevators. Kaleidoscope had a great folk psych thing going on but I'm fairly sure they're british.
You guys need to calm down...everyone was on acid anyway. It's fun just to see what came out of it all on the other end. That's what it's all about anyway right?
@plectrum94 What would be the point of a list of PF, Cream and Beatles tracks that everyone has heard?? Thanks dyvelsten, heard some bands that I hadn't heard of to investigate. (that is the point)
actually certain songs of the beatles had the psychedelic feel, but in general, i wouldnt classify them as a psychedelic group. in any case, theyre british and this list is of american artistes.
definition of psychedelic = producing distorted sensory perceptions and feelings or altered states of awareness or sometimes states resembling psychosis; "psychedelic drugs, etc ... your music my friend is not psychedelic, but you tried
you´re missing Donovans Hurdy Gurdy Man!! Allthough hes Scotish i think Jimmy Paige and John Bonham did a version of his song with him, in my opinion its one of the best psychodelic rock songs from the 60´s
you´re missing Donovans Hurdy Gurdy Man!! Allthough hes Scotish i think Jimmy Paige and John Bonham did a version of his song with him, in my opinion its one of the best psychodelic songs from the 60´s
From very good article on Wikipedia "Psychedelic Rock is a style of rock music that is inspired or influenced by psychedelic culture and attempts to replicate and enhance the mind-altering experiences of psychedelic drugs. It emerged during the mid 1960s among folk rock and blues-rock bands in United States and the United Kingdom......" and thats a good start point so no Who Animals Yardbirds but how about Electric Prunes and even some Beatles tracks.....
@tim60s321 - didn't it all start when Dylan went electric X USA blues, though ironically one of his most quintessential psychedelic renderings sounds highly acoutsic indeed. So does most of his other stuff actually. And I still get why he didn't want to do the Easy Rider soundtrack, if that was a true story.
How Cocaine Abuse Ruined The 60s - When Crown Chakra Became Ego Mania.
The Beau Brumels! I haven't heard that name in over 40 years! Thanks for bringing back the memory. I thought it was going to be forever lost in the ethereal time that was the 60s.
Where's all the Steppeunvele and Apryl Fool!? The title clearly says "USA," but that doesn't explain why there are no Danish or Japanese groups!
I kid...But seriously, aside from Gentle Wanderin Ways (not my favorite) and Lord Love a Duck (I hate that song), I love this list. I've never heard of any of these bands and I appreciate the introduction.
You mean "In your opinion". I lived in LA through the entire decade and many of these songs I have never heard although I recognize Quicksilver in a 70's incarnation, not the original lineup with Cippolina. This is not definitive at all. Top psychedelic groups were Hendrix, Cream, Dead, Yardbirds, Zepp, Stooges, SF Groups (Airplane, QS, Big Brother), LA Groups (Doors, Iron Butterfly, Zappa, Captain Beefheart, Spirit) and London Groups (Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, Pretty Things) etc.
The beginning and middle are good, but it is missing The End.

@Victorcorpsebride you don't know shit you just pretend you do because you know everyone on hear is dumb enough to believe stupid piece of shit

Have a nice day no go back to your mirror and admire yourself.

this list is incomplete because it doesn't have one of the greatest american musicians, along with bob dylan and elvis, mr. jimi hendrix
frompilios 7 months ago
@dyvelsten I didnt mean elvis was psychadelic, i just meant that he along with dylan and hendrix, are the greates american musicians of all time.

A much more appropriate title might have been '10 of the best generally unheard psych. songs of the late '60's."
TheStatue1 7 months ago
very interesting..i'm 53 and never heard any of these...glad you didn't post the popular bands, as EVERYONE has heard those songs before..
minkyblack 7 months ago 3
What the younger people commenting here don't realize is how much influence the local bands in California had on the mainstream "big bands" of the 60s. The Brits were still doing 50's style rock when the San Francisco sound came along and they soon copied it.The psychedelic style was very anti-corporate, the music was written and developed by the bands, with no direction from corporate music directors and producers. Phil Spectors "wall of sound" style, used by the Beatles, was held in contempt!
Bullettube 7 months ago
omg how the FUCK could you miss Beatles?!! i'm may only be 18 but even i know that the Beatles deserved a spot in this vid!!
PandaBoo92 7 months ago

Cheers.

Very nice!
I like how people are acting up as if these ten were THE ten and ONLY ten songs that are the coolest/best in the 60s. People need to just relax and enjoy the music.
PaulinoAuyon 7 months ago
I don't think that you can compile a list of 10 songs that everybody can agree with, but I admire that you are willing to put together a fairly obscure list together, including a few bands I've never heard. Thanks.

From very good article on Wikipedia "Psychedelic Rock is a style of rock music that is inspired or influenced by psychedelic culture and attempts to replicate and enhance the mind-altering experiences of psychedelic drugs. It emerged during the mid 1960s among folk rock and blues-rock bands in United States and the United Kingdom......" and thats a good start point so no Who Animals Yardbirds but how about Electric Prunes and even some Beatles tracks.....
tim60s321 11 months ago
@tim60s321 - didn't it all start when Dylan went electric X USA blues, though ironically one of his most quintessential psychedelic renderings sounds highly acoutsic indeed. So does most of his other stuff actually. And I still get why he didn't want to do the Easy Rider soundtrack, if that was a true story.

The Beau Brumels! I haven't heard that name in over 40 years! Thanks for bringing back the memory. I thought it was going to be forever lost in the ethereal time that was the 60s.
panpeeker 11 months ago
