I had scarlet fever, too. I got it when I was little. A lot of babies get it, but don't die from it or have adverse effects from it later. Now, simple penicillin can cure it, similar to the way strep throat is cured.
Would the doctor have really been able to determine for sure that she was going blind just by examining her eyes a second time and learning she had scarlet fever years earlier. Granted I know nothing about it but I don't think he'd be able to tell by looking into the pupil that the nerves were dying (I could be wrong).
@GreenAshR47 Think of it like this: If I had a fever, a terrible thirst, had trouble swallowing, and pain, you might not be able to come up with a diagnosis. But, if I suddenly told you I had a bat bite me a month ago, your mind would connect the dots, and would immediately go to Rabies as the diagnosis. It's the same thing here, I'm guessing. Their are patterns that the doctor may not realize until more information is gathered.
@Jennafu832 Ok, I get it. Now that I think of it, hadn't she been slowly going blind for like 2-3 years (starting around the time she first got glasses) and just didn't realize it till it got real bad?
@GreenAshR47 Yeah, but to be honest, I'm not sure her vision would go from being able to read and write by lamplight to blind in a matter of a few weeks. That seems extreme to me. Especially since she had had her glasses for years. She went from progressing incredibly slowly to a rapid decline, almost as if some kind of sudden trauma triggered her to lose her sight. I mean, she just woke up one morning blind. Obviously, she could see well enough to get into the loft the night before to sleep.
@rcktmanil If you look really closely, Mr. Hanson hasn't even come out of his office when Charles says Hi Karl Charles is talking to a guy working at the mill when he says that, as you can see when the man stops and waves to Charles. It's obvious, then, that the other character on the screen is named Karl, and coincidentally, it just happens to also be the name of the actor playing Mr. Hanson
@mustwinder If you look really closely, Mr. Hanson hasn't even come out of his office when Charles says "Hi, Karl!" @kallgoren He had no time to think in my opininion. These words gave him an emotional shock. He was just unable to talk and swallowed his tears. He is so devastated,so heartbroken. This passage brings me tears.
@QueenBrendaSIV Mary was actually only 15. And in all REALITY!!! most girls at this age in the 1880s, were married by age 16 at least. Yes to think a 17 year old in 2011 getting married would be weird.
I thought Sprague left in Season 3. Remember, "To Live With Fear", Charles tried going to him for money, but found out that he left. I guess he came back quietly?
Episodes like this make you value the simple things in life. While you're busy worrying about bills and money, you forget about the blessings that make your life. Rarely do you think about how valuable your eyesight is while you've still got it.
I can't imagine how hard it must be for someone to be blind...I wouldn't want to be. But I'm glad Mary meets a nice guy and eventually marries him. So it didn't turn out bad at all. In the show, at least
Trivia: The real Mary Ingalls also went blind, but she never married or had any children. She lived with Caroline and Charles untill the day she died. Poor Mary.
@anjajune Thanks for the LHOP trivia, however Mary Ingalls died in Keystone, South Dakota on October 17, 1928 at the home of her younger sister Carrie.
@anjajune she lived a good life, taken care of by ones whom she loved and who loved her...And she was highly educated ( went 7 years or so in a great school for the blind ) and probably cultivated herself until her death...believe me, at the time, the life she had was not that tragic altogether !
@vickiormindyb That seems impossible. It's incredible that it's been that short of time that's passed. The differences are so great it seems as ancient as the dinosaurs.
@vickiormindyb I recently saw an episode of All in the Family where Michael brings up the indians land being stolen from them and I remembered Little House realizing that land was often stolen from white settlers too. The railroad did it and they made mistakes like the one that ended Walnut Grove in the last episode. These were just terribly unfair times where all races lost land and got paid nothing.
@aftershock71 I don't think lasik would have done any good in Mary's case. The nerves in her eyes were dying, They still don't have the technology for nerve-regeneration even today.
@GreenAshR47 No, but I don't think the nerve damage they're talking about is as commonplace today, probably because of antibiotics. My youngest sister caught Scarlet Fever when she was 18 (yep, you can still get it) and she didn't have this problem.
@soulcornflake1 Since there were no antibiotics, Mary's scarlet fever resulted in complications. We rarely see such severe complications anymore. It became meningitis which resulted in a stroke. That's what caused her blindness. She was lucky she survived. The nerves were damaged by the stroke and her eyesight gradually declined.
@soulcornflake1 hmmm I didn't think it was still around since we get immunized for everything. I think the big problem back then is they could'nt control fever with medication like we do. They just put them in ice when a bad fever comes. Fever can even effect the brain if over heated. I'm surprised it was nerves that were affected rather than the occipital lobe getting over heated. If that part of the brain is damaged you can be blind with eyes that work perfect.
the real Mary Ingalls went blind because of scarlet fever. Both she and Laura as well as her parents had scarlet fever but for some reason only Mary became blind due to it.
I remember the book that had the whole scarlet fever thing in it and Mary became blind because the fever settled in her eyes. I could be wrong though.
@meeeeeeow95 yes it is right. It was an epidemics at that time but mary lost sight.Contrary to the episode, she didn't scream but accepted the fact.Real mary had to be a very, very brave person.Or it was her education.
That would have to be the most devastating news a parent could ever get. My heart breaks and it is just a story-a true story-but a story just the same.
Someone else told me that too. I think it was a movie magazine contradicting series that said in real life she didn't. I also read the actress playing her, hated pretending to be blind.
I have been looking for this episode for years. I didn't know the name of it, which made it alot harder to find. Anyway, thanks for putting this up on YouTube.

Michael Landon is such a fantastic actor. His ability to portray emotion is astounding and he does such an amazing job of showing the emotion in his eyes. He's a truly gifted person.
I know. he can always turn on the tears. Katy Kurtzman had the same ability as a child actor. Michael was very convincing. poor Mary. one of the saddest episode for the Ingalls.
When Mary's first child dies is in the epi "Sound of Children." When her second child dies is in the epi "May We Make Them Proud" which I have uploaded on my channel.
I don't think that it's a good idea to lie to your kids. Ever. She's going blind and Charles should tell her as soon as possible. It would be a bit of a shock to wake up one day, with no eye sight.

I've been there and done that...myself. Sooner or later, as one gets older, it gets worse and worse. Everyone has its own way of dealing with adversity...Charles decided it was best for the time.
I didn't like the show much after this.
