First of all your not even reviewing this game on an original master system but an attachment, secondly this port is a lot more faithfull to the arcade original than the NES version ever was.
I love this reviewer, but he's simply wrong here. This version of Double Dragon on the SMS was not only extremely fun, but it was one of the best SMS games.
@cryptichearts He said he didn't like the Sega Master System version. Stop being mad over someone's opinion of a game and stop hating on a great entertainer who makes great reviews! I personally like Double Dragon, although I've not had the luck to play the original NES or Sega Master System version.
The Genesis version isn't much better. The music is screechy at certain parts and the gameplay is pretty slow for that time. Hit detection can also leave you frustrated at how often you're getting hit AFTER you press the buttons and nothing happens. I also found it annoying that wherever you moved, the opponents moved WITH you as almost a mirror image.
I think this version is alot better then what the reviewer is giving it credit for. Had lots of fun with this game in the late 80's. I personally thought it was better then the NES version. Now the Atari 7800 is by far the worst version of Double Dragon and I like the 7800 but they butchered this game on that console.
The SMS versions of games more often tried to mimc the actual arcade gameplay, whereas Nintendo versions would abandon the arcade gameplay altogether and change the game into something that caters more to the system's capability and game length.
Given the systems' inferiority to the hardware of the arcade namesakes, more often than not the NES games ended up being better games on their own merit since the system could actually run them well. Sometimes the SMS pulled off a fun conversion though
I like how the blinking light in the upper right-hand corner says Press Start for the second player to join but there is no Start button on the Sega Master System controllers. :0
@pacmman it's not that the system wasn't up to the task. It would have been really awesome if you had the right programmers making it. If the programmers who made it in the arcade, made it on the Master System, it wouldn't look as good as the arcade but it would be pretty close.
a game close to many a retro gamers heart. I too, however, share the sentiment that this is a poor version, not in terms of being graphically 'faithful' to the Arcade version, however, the gameplay is poor. I'm no Nintendo fanboy, and I'm speaking PURELY from personal opinion and experience, however, I genuinely believe the best versions of the Double Dragon series available reside solely on the NES (even inc. DD3!!)
Yes... even better than the 'legendary' Arcade versions.
I wish this video didn't have some dick talking shit over it. This game is the nuts I still play it to this day, guy don't know what hes talkin about.
wow this dude is stupid, that is a classic on sega master systems and i thoguht the music and sounds rocked on sega master systems, like chop lifter, zillion, rocky and others
2d games will always rock, unlike today's games, which really really suck because they try 2 hard with all that unnecessary "special affects" like super - buff dudes, unnecessary fatalities(Mortal Kombat?), stupid talking(at least with most 2d, u read a story, not listen 2 annoying talking voices), & other unnecessary features. at least with 2d, there's a certain mystery, not everything has 2b so "fantastic" or "life - like." in short, 3d games of today suck & 2d games will always rock
Back in 89 I owned both the NES and SMS versions and I personally had more fun with this version than the NES version. I like the graphics on this one much better and you get all the moves from the beginning unlike the NES version where you slowly get a new move when you reach a certain score. Unless you use the game genie. The biggest thing is 2 player simultaneous playing.
Retro Gamer Mag rated this version as the best port... despite the flickering, it actually plays better than most other versions, has better graphics and unlike the Nes version, actually has a proper two player mode.
WOW this is one of the times where i wish i was born in the 80s unfortunately i was born in the 90s where the 3D invaded console games where i couldn’t play 2D games

How can he call them REVIEWS ?? First impressions maybe but REVIEWS ??? such an injustice for these games.Like he just picks a game plays it for 5 mins then talks a load of nonsense about it then racks up 75,000 views.
i dont know why you get so much flick on your sms games is it possible because you play them thru a genisis? i get next to no filicker with my sms 2 and is one of the reasons why i like it better than the nes
Did you rate Atari 7800 Double Dragon by chance? Never played that one but looks (and definitely sounds) horrible. I would assume it is a MUCH worse version than the SMS version. (Took me a few tries to get this comment right. lol)
The graphics looks good here but the movements don't seem anywhere near as smooth as the NES. Lousy sound too. Looks fun but I don't know. I didn't know anybody back in the 80's/early90's who had a Sega Master System. We all had NES's and some of us had Ataris too. Never a SMS. I met one person who had a SMS in 1992. I didn't play it but he said it was not anywhere near as cool as NES. Is that true?
@thatguyontheright1 Makes sense. There has to be some great games on the SMS. As a kid I wanted every video game system regardless of what others said. Probably would have liked NES the best still but would have been in heaven if I owned every system.
I totally disagree ! The NES version was worse than this one. Moreover, It was possible to play with 2 players on the Master system version (not on the NES version). The best version of this game was the Nintendo Gameboy advance.
Dude, you said it has horrible music because you were playing the English version of the game,as some Japanese Sega Master Systems were equipped with a Yamaha 2413 sound chip to make the sounds and music sound better than their English counterparts.
Is this the worst version? The NES version is better than this one? I hate NES version, it's slow and the graphics are horrible. The MS version have more colors, it's fast and even more playable.
Bad review! This game was and still is way better than the NES version. Man, I enjoy most of your other reviews, as I was always more of a SEGA fan. But, wow this review was way off.
this was a fucked up review , but i'm not the type lets other people's opinions my law so i'll just say to those curious, play it . it's not a bad game.....
The best adaptation of the arcade game. The NES was a completely different game. Should've called it something else. And no two players, come on. Back in the day, co-op games were extremely rare, and this was one of the best ones out there.
Dude i have to disagree, yeah the game blinks a lot, but the music is a good 8-bit adaption. Play the atari2600 version, not as good as this one. I just got it for Christmas this year and it is really fun.

i remembered playing this version coop with my friend back in the old days, i wanted to experiance it again so i bought the NES version and there was no coop, i think that alone makes this version better
@Adam060756: I was upset when he replaced the original song and added his bullshit on it. Plus he kept complaining too much about it. Like who the fuck told him to play an old school game right lol
@r25rjr I don't know man I love this game myself, I finished it without any problems the other week.
Maybe Mark the uploader didn't play the game enough to see how much better it is over the NES version.
I think people today expect too much from old video games, there's too much complaining, people will complain if it's not stereo, if it's not HD, if it's doesn't have this or that. if it's PAL 50Hz, just shut up and play the cunt!
@Adam060756: I hope he see's our comments dude lol. I couldn't agree more with you. I honestly thought I was the only retro gamer in the world, until I've discovered this and your channel.
Also saying this game is better than the NES version because it's more like the actual arcade game is an awful reason to call it better.
Because as it stands it's a very inferior port, while the nes version wasn't a port at all. I like that NES games like this, Ninja Gaiden, Contra and Bionic Commando weren't exactly like the arcade games, instead becoming new games in their own right, and actually superior to the originals.
Multiplayer doesn't make this version better either, or good.
True there was flicker and perhaps the hit detection really was bad, but this was a much better port of the arcade than the NES one and I have the NES one. On the NES you had to level up, in the arcade version you already started with all your moves. Plus the arcade version is much harder. Bobo brothers (Those big guys.) do not even show up for the NES until mid to almost the end if I recall correctly. NES had no two player mode at the same time either although it does have a Vs mode.
for me this was better than the nes version this is an arcade port not like the nes. But the perfect port was the genesis one I love that game no mater what the people says about the music, the genesis one the speed was also better the arcade one has slowdowns.
Worst version of Double Dragon ever has to go to the Atari 2600 version. Just imagine trying to play Double Dragon with one button. It's worse than what you're imagining.
this game was shit i had this on sega mastersystem always played it with my brother and when we fishend of the boss we always did a cool move at the same time during the photo moment...these kinda memories always makes me feel sad kinda strange thumbs up if you feel me
Double Dragon on the Master system is an arcade port. Sega did a good job bring the arcade feel to the home console. With what sega had to work with in the mid to late 80's . Double dragon is good game for the master system. Nintendo learned a lot form sega!!! Nintendo Your Welcome
He's Probably thinking about the NES Version of Double Dragon II (2) which was probably the best fighting Game I have ever plaed for the NES. Seriously, it's Long, Full of Bad Guys, has solid Music, Headlock Moves (depending on what direction you are pressing when they are in headlock) & the whole Game runs fine even in 2 player. It's the Shit & anyone who loved this? Try the 2nd one for the NES. Is there a 2nd one for this console I wonder? Prob Not as good. But the 1st one for NES SUCKED BALLS
OK looks bad motherfucker but those time this was one of a few game that you play simultaneously with you friends, your brother, you don't shit about reviews stupid motherfucker.
Hard to hit people, you don't know what your talking about. I was a master at this game, I could get through the first two levels without getting hit by anyone and still beat on those cronies, it just took practice.
Great game thanks for the vid, it brought back some great memories.
@ixonixas hes not trying to be cool like angry video game nerd....he gives one bad review and you think hes a retro game trash talker? no, if you bother to watch his review he LOVES retro games....most of them. but not all of them
he says both good and bad about games and gives his honest real opinion....it would help if you knew that
I got this game for my Master System by mailing in some proof of purchases for some freebie offer. Took like 6 months for it to show up. I thought it wasn't, until one day it just arrived. The game was not the best, but it was good for the Master System. Brother and I would kill lots of time co-op'ing on this.
@oOConspirASSy When I was a kid, everyone had an NES. Whenever myself, and people I knew met someone who had a Sega Master System, our ears would raise, and we would wanna play it. Master System had some cool games, and was more arcade like. Now Genisis was neck and neck withe SNES so the shoe was about on the same foot when the next generation came out.
@RHart51680 yeah the first question I asked kids that had a Master System was if they had Double Dragon lol.. always wanted to try that version because I heard it was better but never did
I remember when both nes and sega came out with this game. There was such a huge controversy cause the NES was one player and the Sega was 2 player. My Sega friends thought this was proof that Sega was better then nintendo. I've played both and even though it's a let down DD for Nes was one player, the graphics, animation, music, and gameplay was miles ahead of the Sega game. But I understand some people liking the Sega Double Dragon cause it's more true to the arcade.
I love the sequel on the NES and hate the first. The SMS version is amazing, it's more reminiscent to the arcade and has co-op but the NES had neither.
the NES version was better.... but there was a version, I can't remember on which system, that was horrible. I rememebr it was on arcade... and just terrible.
The Sega Master System basically seems to be an upgraded Colecovision. It has the same processor, with similar sound and video chips. Impressive little machine though.
First of all your not even reviewing this game on an original master system but an attachment, secondly this port is a lot more faithfull to the arcade original than the NES version ever was.

The worst version is the Atari 2600 one.

It saddeness me that the Sega Master System version of this game looks better than the Atari ST version. At least IMO.
Even though the Atari ST version was closer (looks) to the arcade version. Yeah, I know, tough to explain.

I only played DD3 as a kid, which sucks, so I never liked the series.

the 7800 version is worse it has the same music as the 2600 music version of the same no flicker though

Multiplayer doesn't make this version better either, or good.
kingboobs20 1 year ago
@kingboobs20 Ninja Gaiden and Double Dragon were better on the arcade

Sega Genesis Power Base converter generates twice the flickering than a real Sega Master System console! - I had both back in the day.
grinrause 1 year ago
nes version way better it's a classic
MrChosenone10 1 year ago
True there was flicker and perhaps the hit detection really was bad, but this was a much better port of the arcade than the NES one and I have the NES one. On the NES you had to level up, in the arcade version you already started with all your moves. Plus the arcade version is much harder. Bobo brothers (Those big guys.) do not even show up for the NES until mid to almost the end if I recall correctly. NES had no two player mode at the same time either although it does have a Vs mode.

lol I was like what the hell is that music. "I couldn't take the music anymore..." nice.
ZDWario 1 year ago
for me this was better than the nes version this is an arcade port not like the nes.

But the 1st one for NES SUCKED BALLS
therealKINDLE 1 year ago
@therealKINDLE
It absolutely did not. The first one for the NES was awesome and way superior to this.
I do like the Master System though.

Hard to hit people, you don't know what your talking about. I was a master at this game, I could get through the first two levels without getting hit by anyone and still beat on those cronies, it just took practice.
Great game thanks for the vid, it brought back some great memories.

I got this game for my Master System by mailing in some proof of purchases for some freebie offer. Took like 6 months for it to show up. I thought it wasn't, until one day it just arrived. The game was not the best, but it was good for the Master System. Brother and I would kill lots of time co-op'ing on this.

The worst incarnation of Double Dragon besides the Atari one though was part 3 on Nintendo.
RHart51680 1 year ago
all the people who had sega say it was better but the nes version was an all
around better game and i would say that sega had a few good games BUT!!
the only ones who complain are the geeks who had sega and played alone at home while everone hung out at the kids house with the nes.
oOConspirASSy 1 year ago
@oOConspirASSy When I was a kid, everyone had an NES. Whenever myself, and people I knew met someone who had a Sega Master System, our ears would raise, and we would wanna play it. Master System had some cool games, and was more arcade like. Now Genisis was neck and neck withe SNES so the shoe was about on the same foot when the next generation came out.
RHart51680 1 year ago
@RHart51680 yeah the first question I asked kids that had a Master System was if they had Double Dragon lol.. always wanted to try that version because I heard it was better but never did
JPThunder01 1 year ago

TheSmashgamer 1 year ago
If you think this versions bad Mark, then you need to check out the C64 version. Now that makes the Ms version look like God.

the NES version was better.... but there was a version, I can't remember on which system, that was horrible. I rememebr it was on arcade... and just terrible.

The Sega Master System basically seems to be an upgraded Colecovision. It has the same processor, with similar sound and video chips. Impressive little machine though.
