Stevenson would be ashamed of today's Democrats because they don't stick to the party platform. Today's Democratic is very similar (especially in terms of economics) to the party of FDR. The difference is the politicians won't stick to the damn platform.
The reason they had to "draft" Stevenson is because the Democrats had been in the White House for 20 years, and it was time for a change. No Democrat had any realistic chance of winning, particularly with the war-hero Eisenhower being the Republican candidate.
I heard a story that a voter once told Stevenson "you're the thinking man's candidate" his reply was "Thank you but I need a majority." He had a sharp-wit!
I think the "insiders" always nominated better candidates than the people, one notable exception being Eisenhower. The "people" are usually always wrong; the "people" crucified Christ!
Yea they the Dems lost the White House because a man never ran at all was chosen.
