  • Love the atonal chord at the end. It seems to sound like a disappointment, a heartbreaking, to you. And even to me...

  • The best pianist/ keyboardist ever!!!!: Mr Jordan Rudess.

  • is it a total improvvisation .....? Also from 4:00 ...?

  • @Episio I think you`ll find excerpts from previous experiences and past creations within ``improvisation``

  • Holy. freaking. Shit.

So emotional. I love DT, but I had always felt the keyboards seemed a little distant. Until the latest album and this solo. The heartwarming build-up is long and enduring, you can almost feel the long friendship that was there until it just broke down.

I have new respect for Jordan Rudess, both as a keyboardist and a human.

  • Yeah it's bad to lost Portnoy, but now we have another Mike: Mangini. I was in the concerto of Houston at the Verizon Wireless Theater and Mangini was great, personally didn't miss Portnoy,of course he is in our mines and hearts but the life goes on. Jordan's musica now represent for me the goodbye to a friend.

    Goodbye Mike Portnoy, thanks Jordan.

  • Not simple to get, here's a shot: Jordan says they had hard and good times along, but their relationship was just great. However, life has many ways and he respects the one Mike took.

    Sorry, i'm just assuming.

  • Jordan....I fucking love you

    No homo

  • I have to say that Jordan just got an special bright in this piece. I can feel Jordan's feelings here as every note hits my ears. Thanks for sharing these six minutes of pure art and thanks for making my day a little more magic. I always carry your music in my heart Jordan. Thanks again!

  • Jordan, If only the rest of the world communicated as clearly and eloquently as you. I came to watch this video because I enjoy Dream Theater not because I wanted to shed a tear. I did not expect for you to pull a Vulcan Mind Meld. Awesomely beautiful!

  • You rock, i remember you playing on the dramatic turn of events tour, and i cant believe that i was able to be that close to one of the best piano players in the world. i will remember that concert for a very long time

  • Beautiful!

  • wow that last note still freaks me out every time and i've seen this at leat 20 times.

  • seriously how can this just be improvised? This is incredible.

  • @ 6:00 stars implode light-years away.

  • i'm crying .

  • Roger Waters - Lost Boys Calling at 2:30? :)

  • I'm not going to lie and say I understand. But I feel you Jordan, god damn it I feel you.

  • this song MUST be in the new album!

I undestand, dear Jordan, I understand...

  • beautiful but im a little confused. i hear him say "dont go away" at one point but then i heard " thats alright/ thats ok" and couldn't make out any of the other lyrics too well. so idk exactly what he means there

but aside from that the music speaks to me in different ways

could it depict his emotional state of mind where he is both sad yet hopeful at the same time?

but that cacophonous chord at the end makes me think otherwise almost like he' saying portnoy's departure messed up the DT family

  • @dillboy3333 He's summarizing the event in 6 minutes.

I had the same thing happen to me recently, gf broke up with me, i couldn't accept it, i played guitar for 5 hours a day for 2 weeks and then i was all accepting and i could move on.

These 6 minutes are just a summary of emotions jordan felt during the events that took place regarding portnoy and the band. He progresses from denial to acceptance in this song.

  • beautiful

  • Thumbs up if u think Jordan Rudess and Buckethead should get together and do an album together. If they did that then their would finally be peace on earth.

  • Total Mastery of the instrument.....

  • i shed a tear

  • How the hell does something to beautiful, so much emotion and power have dislikes? This is an amazing piece of music and people dislike it? I don't understand...

Keep it up Jordan, you are amazing and you are a great influence.

  • lovely...

  • See you next 6th June, Jordan :).

  • A great peace to end the new album with a rock twist!! Maybe? God bless your talent Jordan! Peace!

  • here for my daily listen Jorden :)

  • wow, play me to sleep!

  • Beautiful man, Dream Theater lives.

  • @fer9m AND ALWAYS WILL!

  • so beautiful...jordan rudess's playing is so enchanting

    on a side note....that's improvised!? o.o omg

  • It's magical:)

  • this song says to me that he loved his relationship over the time they had creating wonderful and inspirational music but its impossible not to be annoyed at how things have turned out knowing that everybody was waiting for more music that in myself helps me live life and make my choices and understanding certain situations thats i wont ever experience. to feel how i feel now is so disheartning so i cant imagine how it feels to be jordan or any of the other guys but this song gives us a glimpse.

  • wow.

  • the ending made me curious to what Jordens really trying to say

  • He just told us a story. very clearly.

  • The last note gets me every time. I really hope that in the future you guys can work out any differences you may have and make incredibly music together again. Until then, keep on writing the amazing music that you have for the last 25 years.

  • you remind me of another prolific composer and virtuoso who experimented with music, and brought on the impressionistic era. Franz Liszt, perhaps you were him in your past life.

  • what do i hear?......Joyful sadness. He is happy that mike found a place where he wants to be, but that mean he loses a friend and that includes all the good memories. amazing JR, amazing

  • You always do sooooo much in one single improv...there's sooo much to learn...meyyyaaan! :D

  • i put it on my ipod i hope thats okay with you JR

  • 17 people doesn't like the grand finale jajajajaj xD

  • that last chord

  • I think he expresses happiness and best wishes for portnoy as well as a gap in Dreamtheaters musical flow. DT is in a loss, but they'll fill the gap. It will change the Style of DT, with a new drummer, but i'm on their side, always supporting them.

The song is amazing . Best wishes for the future from Germany...

  • Simply amazing... You touch my heart with your notes, Jordan.

  • What makes me happy and alive is not only hearing this but knowing so many ppl out there appreciate this! Cheers to you all! =)

  • Jordan posts something meaningful that any of you would be hard-pressed to find something more creative and demonstrative of human emotion. So what do you all do? Argue like a bunch of whining fucking two-year-olds that just talk to hear the sounds of your own fucking voices.

Here's an idea: shut the fuck up and listen to the music. Nobody gives a fuck if you're mad about something you have no control over, get used to the fact that your life lacks control, as does everyone's, and deal.

  • @PaganWarDrummer Ever Buckethead Can't Express As Much Emotion In Music As Jordan Rudess Does

  • @PaganWarDrummer You don't need to get used to anything in life, you just need to be able to accept things for what they are.

Also, why would you be bothered by people arguing on youtube if "nobody gives a fuck" implying you don't care either?

You need to "get used to" or "accept" that youtube is not the place to be for intellectual/intelligent conversations so you trying to change the way things are is futile.

Take your own advice and don't bother with stupid people on youtube or the internet

  • @a7xsuxnotsmart

Yeah dude. Don't hate on a7x it's not their fault the rev died. And believe me when I say your not the only one thats sad that portnoy left dt but don't just point fingers. A7x and dream theater are like my favorite bands and both drummers are replaced. Btw u should also check out albums "Nightmare" "Waking the Fallen"& "Avenged Sevenfold" then talk shit.

Jordan ur a robot that was created by the government to amaze mankind. Keep it up. Good vid. 5 stars!

  • @a7xsuks657438374

First off, i agree with your name.

Secondly, calm the fuck down and stop hating on people.

seriously dude, your ruining the song for me.

    Great song.

    :D

  • Still waiting on the new drummer announcement, Jordan...

  • To all of you that clicked this video and wanted to discuss the situation with Portnoy, or just to hear Jordan play the piano, I sincerely apologize for starting a mini flame war with that retarded douche.

  • the last chord means "FUCK!!!!!!"

  • c'mon mike!!!where's you?they love you...

  • amazing! simply

  • MP is an overrated asshole. Cheers!

  • And my friend(who is a huge children of bodom fan) says Warman is a better keyboardist, i see this and i pity at the taught.

  • Fuck, first time in ages a tear drops from my eye

  • Sometimes I think people purposely hit dislike just to see what the top rated comments will bring. Get a fuckin life, people. This is beautiful.

  • hey jordan what are your thoughts about avenged sevenfold taking your drummer do you accept them or do you hate there living guts if you think you cant comment back if you hate them because you think a7x fans will get mad then send me a message about what you think of a7x an trust me i wont say a word if you say you hate them cause i effen hate the living crap out of a7x for doing that

  • @a7xsuks657438374

You do realize that A7X has straight up turned Portnoy down when he asked to be their permanent drummer, right?

So many damn retards on the internet ranting about things they don't know a fucking thing about.

Also, given that they turned him down, that means that, according to your post, you hate A7X for no reason (seeing how you hate them for stealing Portnoy, when they didn't).

Jesus... at least do some research before making a fool out of yourself.

  • @VictoryShadow how the fuck do you think he got in the band you dumb shit he wouldnt be in a7x if the turned them down now dumb ass look at what your write b4 you write it smart one

  • @a7xsuks657438374

a7x announced their new drummer, and it isn't Portnoy. It's former Confide drummer Arin Ilejay. So far, it's unknown if/when he'll be joinging them permenantly.

Portnoy merely recorded the drum tracks for Nightmare and toured with them for a while. His contract with them is up. You lose. Look it up and then you can come back and apologize to everybody that viewed this video for making a fool out of yourself.

  • @VictoryShadow hahahaahah yess yess put portnoy even said him self he was going to stay with them an now they fucked him over hahahaha an NOW HE CAN NEVER GO BACK TO DREAM THEATER HAHAHAHAHA HE SURE FUCKED UP DIDNT HE HAHAHA FUCK PORTGAY

  • @a7xsuks657438374

Funny... a couple of posts ago you liked Portnoy and hated A7X for "stealing" him. Now you hate him.

I'm aware he asked to join A7X (which was after the DT situation). I even said they turned him down. You must've completely ignored my first comment.

Portnoy is a great drummer. He'll have no problem finding another band. Hell.. he's already working on something.

I'm done with you. You're clearly not intelligent.

  • @VictoryShadow umm no i hated him completely for joining them an are you retarded why the fuck would portnoy evan have a video saying he joined them for good if he didnt why the fuck would he say it himself an if you dont beleve me ima send you the link. but its good that they fucked him over he deserved it AN why the fuck would jordan write a song about how he left dt dumb ass clearly your not intelligent.

  • @a7xsuks657438374 All I read is your post was Bla bla bla wa wa wa Bla bla. you should go back to school before posting like that dude!

  • @Khazanah yup

  • hey jordan what are your thoughts about avenged sevenfold taking your drummer do you accept them or do you hate there living guts if you think you can comment back if you hate them because you think a7x fans will get mad then send me a message about what you think of a7x an trust me i wont say a word if you say you hate them cause i effen hate the living crap out of a7x for doing that

  • Wow, you're singing like you've got a dick in your bum in the end there! I like it!

  • Maybe you ought to release a solo piano album. I enjoyed your playing here more than anything I've heard of Dream Theater. No offense intended, it just isn't my cup of tea. This is.

  • @johnnyanoodle You should check out a CD called "An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess". That should be right up your ally.

  • @johnnyanoodle

    he has...

  • Maybe you ought to release a solo piano album. I enjoyed your playing here more than anything I've heard of Dream Theater. No offense intended, it just isn't my cup of tea.

  • damn I need to get a piano of some sort.

  • Your music is beautiful, regardless of anything.

  • A master of his craft. Thank you for the great music, good times, and fond memories watching you perform with my favorite group of musicians... Dream Theater. You guys are all masters of your crafts and you make it all seem so effortless.

    Peace

  • Steven Wilson, Gavin Harrison, Jordan Rudess, Richard Barbieri(he plays scapes/syth), Roger Waters, and Johnathan Wesley..............my God can a person dream....

  • I don't listen to enough of Jordan Rudess. And I listen to a lot of him.

  • One of Jordans very best improvising songs! (didn`t like the last chord though. . too dark)

  • @niniaty

whole song it's about sadness, last chord symbolizes anger, that mike lives DT...

  • Comment removed

  • this is just beautiful, no other way about it, mike will be missed although i would be so sad if dream theater didn't continue, they are so inspirational and have made me grow from someone how didnt no anything about music to writting my own stuff, i love mike portnoy's work as a drummer and a song writter, and i wish him the best of luck but i hope pray drema theater continues, thank you jordan, john, john, james and mike for all the inspiration, great music and electrifying performace

  • Jordan, thank you so much for enriching my life with your music.

  • the only connection i have with dream theatre other than the awesome music is JCR in these vids...

seems to me he's pissed, but any of you guyz think thats bad, check out the flack mikeys gettin... it's real ruff! hope all ends well...

still tryin to catch up btw jordan, just got a load of subs at once and am strugglin to keep up, all sounds good tho, keep it comin!

  • A very beautiful piece of music ^^ breathtaking :)) thanks Jordan ! =)

  • I don't undestand how could some people dislike this... this is more than a improv, it's an amazing song and a wonderfull feeling that the only one who could do it is our master Jordan Rudess!

JORDAN, put this on your next album, please!!!

  • This always makes me feel happy, someone as gifted as Jordan can easily do that :))

    Mike will be back!!

  • Comment removed

  • To understand music, is to understand life it self. Life is full of music and song, waiting to be discovered. If all the people in the world could understand how amazing music truly is. Maybe, just maybe we would all get along in a more civilized manner. But alas, the human race isn't that smart! At least there are people like us in this world who can teach them.

  • The thing is, I can understand completely.

  • Absolutely Fantastic!

  • OMG Who could dislike this??

Anyway....man you really are a musician, talking thrugh your instrument...

    T_T

    Wonderful em....impro? wow...

    ------------------------

OMG, a quien no le puede gustar esto?

Como sea, man de verdad eres un musico, hablando a travez de su instrumento...

    T_T

    Hermosa...mmm, impro? wow...

  • It's lovely. Jordan has always been at his very best at the ivories without the effects. But I am so upset at Mike still~ I don't really care. he's a selfish sonofabitch. One can 'leave' a band for a year without 'quitting'. My GOD- he was OBSESSED with DT- and it cured him from his disease!

So, with that said- time to get a power drummer and leave Portnoy behind for good.

  • @MagnificentSessions Portnoy only wanted time, he was so tired and for the good of all of them it was necessary, don't have to be upset at Mike, he is also sad.

but life continues and I hope something better comes for Mike and for DT

  • @MagnificentSessions screw you! Mike is the furthest from selfish you'll ever get... he wanted a break, cause he was tired of the same cycle, and he felt he didn't enjoy it as much as his side projects. but the rest of the band would rather continue without him than take a break, that i quite frankly think they need cause they have been running in a hamster wheel for quite some time now...

    Arriba Makina Drean Theater

saludos a todos, desde aka el rincon del mundo CHILE.

  • I can't understand what Jordan is saying at the end and I don't care. The music by itself says so so much more than anything he could ever put into words. An absolutely beautiful and powerful piece of music.

  • Jordan Rudess at his best, (as usual :P)

I bet you won't be reading this, but i wanna say thank you to you guys for making such awesome music throughout the years (even though i only started listening to you guys back in 07'). Whatever you do don't get mad at Mike Portnoy, this is what he feels is right, we all just gotta accept it.

All the best Jordan, and the rest of DT (of course). I look forward to seeing you guys in concert in the future.

  • I am ashamed to admit that I was a little cynical when I started playing this video, a statement through improv, yeah right. A couple of minutes in though I got it. It was very emotional and said all that was needed.

  • it's obvious that you are really sad for the leaving of Mike but in the same time i can understand from the notes that you wish for him the best , and you ask him to keep in his mind all the beautiful memories that you had together guys!

this is one of the finest, emotional, touching piano pieces i've ever heard

    ='')

  • SPECTACULAR ...

  • @luiz850 I bet Jordan will never troll teh interwebz like me. Never! It requires years of experience and having no life, because it consumes much time! Almost like becoming a piano virtuoso: You have to put the time in. Day after day after day. There are no shortcuts!

  • holy shit this is the first time i have ever been brought to tears by a song

  • Im having an orgasm

  • Listened to this 3 times in a row... So relaxing :')

  • i love his beard. sorry for the comment which is not appropriate. of course it´s great music, i love it. i see this as an inspiration of my piano playing. i love it.

  • Great stuff Jordan. Thanks for "replying" during this state of madness for DT fans. Mike's leaving was pretty much the biggest news I've received in my life lately. I'm still shocked. However, I know you guys are planning on forging ahead. I hope the band does reunite sometime down the road, but for now, I hope you can bring someone inspirational and positive.

Has anyone heard any updates on drummers to fill the large void that Mike has left? I'll cast my vote for Virgil Donati :D

  • I understand.

  • Wow, this is so beautiful! I'd love to hear the new DT album open with something like this. A keyboard, guitar, bass, and vocal piece to sorta put a pin in DT's history (a sorta drum-less farewell), then explode with new material!

  • @tonmon82 really good idea :)

  • 1 LOVE 1 <3

  • Jordan pissed off at 6:05

  • Hey Jordan!... Im really shocked. Read the message today that Mike leaves DT... fuck its my birthday.

Im a fan over 17 years and no days starts and ends with your music... and when I hear *Jordan Speaks*, I can only cry. That song is really what you SPEAK, what you feel... WHAT I FEEL... deep sorrow in my heart. I really hope the long story of DT doesnt ends. I will miss Mike, hes a part of DT and now I ask me how will the story goes on. Thanks JC for this wonderfull goodbye song.

  • Man, this is just so awesome. I hope the passion and emotion we see in this amazing song somehow makes it onto the next CD. That's what I want back- the melody and the beauty. Thanks so much, JR.

  • Comment removed

  • Gorgeous melodies Jordan. Sometimes music can be conveyed through the soul that words cannot reach. Sad to see Mike go in another direction, but I guess there's a reason for everything in life. You and DT will prevail nonetheless. Beautiful piece sir, and keep rockin!

  • Comment removed

  • Hey JR!

You are one of the greatest composers muscians that I ever hap the pleasure to listen to. Being a drummer you inspire me to jam on my synth and introduce new technologies on my kit. I consider you the modern Keith Emerson! Like MP, I buy anything the you produce especially your solo stuff with Rod Morgenstien! Keep more of the awesome wizardry music coming.

    Take Care.

  • wow jordan! you truly are the greatest pianist in new time.. I really admire your talent. How do you practice and for how long. I am sorry about mike leaving the band, but I'm sure you guys will figure it out.

    best regards

    Joachim

  • I admire the way you express your feelings.I do hand it to you: all you guys (you, Mike, 2 Johns, Labrie)are god-gifted,that's for sure! But to be honest,I don't think DT will EVER be the same without Mike kickin' the hell out of that drum!I really feel that he was,and still is,the REAL ESSENCE of DT.No offense.

I certainly LOVE to forget about everything when listening to you but I know Mike's departure was the worst idea.Hope you'll "turn to the light. Turning away would be a terrible mistake"!

  • That was beautiful and awesome, and the sadness is tangible.

That being said, the last chord scared the sh*t out of me. :D

  • i just cried

  • @bengocoptero ditto :( and im a relative huge guy

  • @bengocoptero you and me both dude

  • I really admire your prodigal ability to improvise, Jordan. You will always be a paradigm to me! Love this piece by the way, beautiful interpretation of Mike's departure. The spirit carries on! - Adrian

  • Dream Theater is the only band that can make me buy an album before even listening to it..

  • @FatJudith

It's not the only band that deserves that, but definitely one of the few... ;)

  • This music deserve to be a single, or something.

Not just because it is so beautiful, but, in my concept, it is the feelings of Dream Theater, the music!

And for this "era of Dream Theater" come to the end, it really deserve to be a single, for me. :)

    Great music, Jordan!

  • Jordan, you always manage to make beautiful music.. Thank you

  • gorgeous, jordan. wow. i'll still buy the new DT album, don't even need to hear it first. haha. all the best to you and the guys

  • if LaBrie decides to leave we now know who could replace him in vocals!

  • You played to express thoughts about Mike's departure.. but the sound of your playing itself is truly far beyond what words can describe or explain.

    Thank you Jordan Rudess.

  • I think that a great musician isn't the man that play the guitar or the piano very well.

I think that a great musician is the one who can express all his feelings whit the music; the good and the bad feelings.

So I think that your are one of best, these piece of music is wonderfull, and I can understand you.

I really love Dream Theater and really love Portnoy, but the show must go on.

    Good Luck Jordan!!!

    Sorry for mi bad english

  • This made me cry. When I read the news on the Dream Theater wiki page, I was pissed off, assuming there was some conflict which drove this family apart. But, the reality is, there was just a difference in their goals, and none of them wanted to separate. I'm relieved to hear you're all still friends, and I hope one day you'll play together again, because the last twenty years of Dream Theater have been an amazing thing to behold.

  • But are you getting a new drummer to Dream Theater?

Or how are you going to continue, High Jordan !

  • Like this comment if you "understand" and believe that this is better than any written statement he could write.

  • @endlessvoid4 Shut the hell up and make a non-attention whoring comment, will you?

  • @Zemed87 Yes I am a attention whore for promoting the power of music to be able to communicate emotions.

  • Very beautiful and poignant. Thank-you Jordan for sharing your feelings.

  • Gracias por tus palabras Jordan, la música que hacen me despierta el alma.

    Lo voy a extrañar a mike =(

  • Jordan, I know you won't read this, but I write it from my heart. I wish the best for both Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy. I am in great shock, even now, that Mike has left, but he made a decision he thought was for the best, and therefore I will respect it. You are all amazing players, and I will forever love Dream Theater and Mike Portnoy. I hope you guys carry forth and do well, and I hope the same for Mike. Thanks for posting this, Jordan. It made my day today :')

  • @jcrudess btw have been lucky enough to see you guys all three times you have played in my home town of melbourne australia so thanks for the memorys!

  • damn stunned to hear that mike has quit but can also understand his need for a break im sure that you guys will carry on and continue making some of the most uplifting and insperational music it has been my honor to hear for the last 20 years!

  • @JCRUDESS

Jordan...I would just like to say that, while yes, I'm just as bummed as 99.9% of DT fans that Mike left, i know you, JP, JM, and The Pirate will continue to make INCREDABLE music together, which I will happily continue to support...and continue to see you guys in concert. You guys are amazing live. First time I saw you was back in '03 with Queensryche :)

Keep rockin', bro! Looking foreward to the next saga in DT history! *cheers!*

    -Matt

  • Man, this summer was the first time i've ever seen dream theater live (although they were opening for maiden). Never thought it would be the last time i'll ever see mike with dt :(

  • Hi Jordan. I'm 15 and my dream is to be like you one day... :] You put so much emotion and creativity in your music, I feel passion it's inevitable!

If I get there one day, it's because I have an idol and it's you :]

  • one of the most beautiful things i've ever heard you play, very emotional

  • I Love it Jordan!

  • All the best to all of you, DT guys, I can only imagine how emotional & difficult decision this was for all of you. You are fantastic musicians and I hope you can recreate the DT-synergy that with somebody else on drums. I am sad I could not work other way and only hope you will get back together one day...

BTW lovely piece of music. Hope more of great stuff is to come with the new DT album, looking forward to it!
