I use the Youtube Downloader Firefox plugin to download the video and run that .flv/.mp4 though GOMplayer to catch the audio. All in all, hardly any different from the process that you detailed.

The damage has already been done to the audio in uploading it to youtube though, and after re-encoding the resultant ripped audio back to mp3, that's something like 4 transcodes (.mp3 -> .avi -> youtube -> .mp4 -> .wav -> .mp3).

That's unacceptable to anyone that, like I said, "likes audio quality." There's no way of getting a lossless rip of any music off of youtube.

Therefore the obvious solution would be to plead (likely unsuccessfully) with the creator to provide an mp3 of the original song to hear it in its full, unrecompressed glory.

Listen you are correct there is a damage with the audio through the process it goes through.

But these people want to download this song which most likely may only be found on youtube and therfore their only way is to directly download from youtube with realplayer (or any other way)

And the audio isn't THAT bad, yes it might be damaged but now youtube allows people to upload videos and audio in high quality and real-player itself doesn't harm the audio.
