Before the wall was torn down, I watched a news documentary about then future plans for this to happen, although it occurred earlier than scheduled. I do not recall, for sure, who the news anchor was or the name of the TV program or which syndicate "channel" it was on. It was one of the original three.... CBS, NBC, ABC. Anyone know where I can find this, here or elsewhere? I tried to obtain information by writing all three, no one responded.

While the wall was absolutely inhumane, I can totally understand why they build it. Just imagine giving your young people free housing, free education, free health care, free transportation and almost free food, and then seeing them leaving the country after having enjoyed all the subsidies that the state provided. A lot of resources were lost that way and furthermore, this behavior was extremely unfair towards the taxpayers.

Read declassfied CIA files and you will see that those claims are childs play compared to what the CIA themselves admit on their files. The CIA has opened up various operation files over the years such as Operation MKultra, Artichoke and Paperclip and the ACLU has used these to review any possible violations committed by them. Of course they don't admit their acts as "crimes" and and not all details are included but within these files have been documentation of voluntary and involuntary drug experiments on citizens, wire taps

If von Braun had not been a genuine rocket scientist he probably would have been hauled before the Nuremburg tribunals. But the US did not want his knowledge to fall into Soviet hands and they, of course, wanted his expertise.

A Faustian bargain? Definitely. But in hindsight, after von Braun's success in ICBMs and the Apollo program, it looks like the right call.

It's not a perfect world. Worldwide USSR adventurism was a real and ongoing danger. In the interests of national security, the US made some difficult decisions and partnered with some distasteful and oppressive regimes. I think it was called 'realpolitik'. As long as they opposed Communism the US often looked the other way.

But this was by far preferable to overt conflict that could go nuclear in hours if not minutes.
