Jesus dying on the cross was the new covenant: The whole "died for our sins" thing. This is where Jews and Christians differ: The majority of the Jews did not believe Jesus was their savior, but some Jews (and other non-Jewish Jesus-followers) who did believe Jesus was their savior branched off and became what we call Christianity today.
