Yes this is Country music, but it is also some of the greatest contemporary blues ever written. Tom T., The Troubadour. The Storyteller. God Bless youTom. Hope your health is still good. Great clip.
If you don't absolutely treasure this long-loved song by Tom T. Hall, there's something broken in your heart that needs mending. One of his best - and this is a great video of him singing it.
I saw Tom in concert at a pub in Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia in the late 1970's.... it was an awesome concert.... I have loved his music ever since... a song writer without equal....
Perhaps the most underrated singer ever in country music. It's incredible how many of his songs are considered classics. I'll take anything by Tom T over today's second-rate stuff...
donotsmudge. Always liked Tom. Made six gallons of Watermelon Wine a few years ago. Still have some. Its a strong laxative (although not fierce), two or three glasses are sufficient. Dont know much about old dogs or children.

The older I get the cooler this song sounds Almaost 65 and have an Old dog. AND LOVE WATERMELLON WINE. Don't knock it till you tried. Even Michael Martin Murphy like it.
Great song, you have to love him. I saw him on an interview, humble, lets the new guys in. Bring him back for Chevy commercials certainly the trucks.
I saw him do this in Columbus Ga. when I was 5. My Mom carried me out to his bus and knocked on the door. he opened the door of the bus, signed an autograph and rubbed me on the head and said hello son. I couldn't say a WORD! He is such a fine fellow.
Hard to believe anyone disliked this song, really is! What a worthy member of the Country Music HOF Tom is...his writing, performances, and the things he and his mrs, "Miss Dixie" have contributed to Music City for years! A class act, and a good man...and a terrific song!
i have to disagree with the comment by geohabe....i can speak only from the perspective of a weekly country radio show I am responsible for. Without fail i will receive requests for several of Tom T's great works on each show and these are country fans believe you me. They primarily request I Love and this "Watermelon" gem but they haven't forgotten the "storyteller"....not at all. Even the younger listeners know who he is so i can't agree with your comment that he's under-appreciated.
One of the greatest examples of songwriting one could ever here. I heard an interview years ago and he talked about the events that led to it. It is all in the song. "God Bless little children while they're still too young to hate" is as good a line as any line ever.
Father's Day is tomorrow. This song was my dad's favorite, I sat with him in his truck and when that song came on, I knew he liked it so much. He never said why and I did not ask.Happy Father's Day Dad.! Dad is in Heaven.
I just NEVER remember Tom T. Hall sounding this great. Back in the day, a bunch of these guys/women just could not sing. He is just soooo smooth. Now I have to re-listen to more of his music. WOW. Thanks for the upload and memories.

Even though I'm an old rock'nroll-ing socialist hippy and not a great country fan, this song makesthe hair stand on the back of my neck!! The words are SO true
You may like it even more, its a true story. Tom T was in Miami for the 72 democratic convention. Not all country stars are gop. But anyway the song is true. Thats wht he "was sittin in Miami"
There was once an old gunsmith and a friend of mine in Dothan, Alabama. He would invite me over to his house sometimes and he'd break out his own watermelon wine...It was so smooth you couldn't detect the alcohol but it packed a PUNCH...we sat on his front porch many times and both of us got plastered......His name was Jeff Orr. great gunsmith and a great old guy. I still think of him fondly....
Christmas, fresh cut grass, summer BBQ, snowmen, fireworks, going fishing, friends, pretty girls, puppies, popcorn and a movie, hotdog and a ball game, music, Thanksgiving smells, children laughing, camping, church, chocolate, cold beer, my wife, my kids, health, presents, childhood memories, T-bone steak, fast cars, summer vacation, Santa Claus, Ford tractor, sleeping in, ice cream, the circus, a warm fire, spring flowers, love, smiles, mothers, faith, life, morning coffee, and Tom T. Hall.
Check out the Tom T and Johnny Cash medley You Tube video. Everyone, including me, always talks about what a great storyteller and songwriter Tom T is but I think one thing he isn't given enough credit for is his voice , which I think is one of the best.
Wow. My dad who died in 2002 loved Tom T and this is what I grew up on as a kid. Even though I'm 44 now and my tastes lie more with the Beatles, Led Zep, Pink Floyd etc, I still think Tom T is one of the most gifted songwriters ever. Just listening to this song makes me realize how artificial country music is right now. It was a better time when Tom T, Charley Pride, Merle, George Jones etc were topping the charts--they wrote from the heart.
I couldn't have said it better. I grew up in TN, right around Nashville. I like all music, but I really go for the older stuff. Merle Haggard is one of my favorites. I play and sin myself, and of course it's the old stuff that gets my blood flowing.
I first heard this GREAT song way back in 1971 when I was 13 years of age. Then in 1974 I bought a Tom T. Hall 8 Track (remember THOSE?) titled "IN SEARCH OF A SONG" and I've been hooked on Tom T. Hall and his unique music ever since ! He is a CLASSIC !

Once upon a time I knew an old gunsmith named Jeff Orr who took an interest in me and taught me a lot about firearms. In the evening we'd go down to his house on Omussee Creek near Columbia, Alabama and sit on the porch sipping his home made watermelon wine....It was so smooth you could easily drink more than you intended. Sometimes We'd both wind up smashed. Good memory.
Terrific song and singer from a brilliant writer and singer who I believe is under-appreciated by country fans and the country music industry generally.
I love Tom T Hall but I didn't know he was from Canada. I don't have a different opinion about him now or anything but that was just something I never took the time to learn. I would love to live in Canada.
The older I get the more these words ring true..... This is country music as it should be.... I just can't handle watermelon wine and prefer Mescal, but it doesn't fit in this song right.
Great memories this song brings back, of growing up in the 70's as a child and my Dad (who is the same age) listening to this song....thanks for the memories Tom T Hall!!
I thought of this song recently after my old dog got hit by a car. I had remembered hearing this song years ago on the radio, wishing at the time that I could have listened to it again. It sounds as good today as it did back then. Thanks for posting.
For those who have lived and listened to the great story teller, Tom T Hall when he was at his peak, it was great. And today it is even more touching, a true to life scenario. It's his story behind the song. Heart strings material, don't you think.
Are you listening to the same video? He's not trying to slow them, it's not to fast, and the words fit perfectly. Tom is a master story teller. If he wanted it slower they would have slowed down. Excellent video, your comment is a disaster.
I've heard many artists speed up their recordings, they get tired of the same arrangements. What you said was he is desperately trying to slow it down, the words dont fit and the recording was a disaster, all are false. Listening to the song for many years means nothing. I've been wearing pants for many years but still dont know how to make them.
I would always try to find this song in juke boxes at truck stop restaurants back in the 70's.... Few juke boxes around nowadays, but Tom T. Hall and this song will live forever.
You sure are right. Tom T. Hall was an original. He is definitely in the same class as Merle Haggard, George Jones and Johnny Cash. I have seen him in concert twice and he is one of the humble men you'll met, and one of the most talented. He has written over 300 songs that have been recorded by himself and others. He is a true country music legend.
Good stuff! There will never be another like him. I put Tom in with Merle Haggard and George Jones, in that singing is as natural as breathing to them.
Yes this is Country music, but it is also some of the greatest contemporary blues ever written. Tom T., The Troubadour. The Storyteller. God Bless youTom. Hope your health is still good. Great clip.

I love Tom T Hall but I didn't know he was from Canada. I don't have a different opinion about him now or anything but that was just something I never took the time to learn. I would love to live in Canada.

Sorry. I typed that incorrectly. Tom is from the US. I meant that I was in Nova Scotia, Canada. lol

The older I get the more these words ring true..... This is country music as it should be.... I just can't handle watermelon wine and prefer Mescal, but it doesn't fit in this song right.

It will if you drink enough of either

Think Tom could have been a hell of a poet if he'd a wanted to be. Well, now that I think of it, he already is.

Thanks for posting this!
