I dont' remember this game too well, but I'm pretty sure this was one of my first plaformer games as a kid. I had a hard time with this game and wasn't too into it, but seeing this makes me wanna go get the game again and see if I got what it takes to beat it ;)
@WildWaddledee *FACEPALM* unless your joking. what a LONG play is, it is a playthrough of the entire game in one video. That is why the video is tremendously long.
graphics for gameboy are really good. And i think it's nice nintendo didn't just copy the same donkey kong country on game boy, but made it different. Also that they released THREE donkey kong land. Gbc didn't have the same royal treatment.
It's supposed to be long. In Longplays, you're supposed to see the entire game from start to finish, including any cutscenes (and in many cases, all endings too). You can find shorter versions of this on YouTube cut into smaller clips, but if you clicked the link to this video and expect a short playthrough, you're in the wrong place. Make sure you actually want to see a Longplay before you click the link leading to one.
i so much loved this game, even now i have all my GB and GBC games in safe place, where i can look at them, and im waiting until nintendo will realize we want to play those games again, but we don't want to buy them in digital crap form...
Sure, it looks like an incomprehensible mess in 4-color monochrome, but throw this on a Game Boy Color/Advance/Player/etc. with the autocoloration to have green backgrounds and appropriately brown DK/Diddy (I think enemies are blue?), and it plays like a dream. It's been a while, but I remember liking colorized DKL even more than SNES DKC1. It's probably the NES-style soundtrack that does it.
I played this game way before I ever played Donkey Kong Country and i gotta say this game was more enjoyable for me. Now i think it's just the nostalgic factor but I'm definitely excited to be getting Donkey Kong Country Returns soon, anytime I play a Donkey Kong game I think of days spent playing this one. Thank you Nintendo!
I never played Donkey Kong Country when I was a kid. We had a SNES but never got that game. But, I did used to play Donkey Kong Land on my Gameboy and Gameboy Color. I sucked at this game when I was 8 and I still suck at 26. Ahh..the memories...lol!!!
The spikey fish thing gave me trouble when I was playing the game during 2. hr delay for school. I was like "HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP GET AWAY FROM ME I JUST WANNA FINISH THE LEVEL"
Thankfully I got all the letters so I could save before I had to go. Why did I play this game that's really old? Because I've never played a DKC game except for this game when I was little, and, since DKCR is coming out I got VC DKC 1 and I started to try and beat this old game boy game :D
Oh yeah, I'm not denying the fact there was a lot of content and the graphics were pretty decent for a game boy game. But I was 11 years old when I first played this and it took me a while to complete it the first time through. I would have liked a satisfying conclusion for all the hard work I put into it.
its a headache to look at. if you wanna get it, i'd suggest the gba version, or at least the gbc version. dk country music does sound cool in 8-bit though
@GameAtHeart well i mean if you wanna play a dk country style game, go for the gbc or gba version. and yes, there was a dk country game on the gbc as well as gba. sorry, didn't mean to say dkl and dkc were the same
@GameAtHeart yeah, i just considered dk land a dkc game, which i thought was the issue you were adressing... but i'm glad we can agree its basically the same game, with some differences.

I LOVED this game as a kid, watching it here makes me want to buy the same gameboy pocket I had again (yellow :D) and just play this beast of a game all day long. The difficulty curve was an absolute work perfection, the graphics were well ahead of their time on a handheld, the music freakin' rocked and the overall game was just crazy.
Oh good god, the nautiluses that chase you... I remember freaking out over those when I was younger. Evil little guys! Swimming backwards, too... (nautiluses swim shell-first but these guys are swimming tentacles-first) I love nautiluses; I just prefer the non-aggressive ones. ;)
This brings back so many memories. I used to have this game when I was about 4 or 5, it was one of my first games growing up. Thank you so much for uploading this!
Ahh memories, I used to play this game.. but I found it horrendously hard. I now realise why - it's too hard to see what the heck you're doing! (I agree with what someone said lower down). That's not just me making excuses, either :P
This game is damn near impossible to play on the original Gameboy. GB screen blurs dark colors as it scrolls. There's very little contrast between the sprite and the BG, which make it difficult to see your charactor. However, the game is Super Gameboy enhanced, which made the game more playable. I have to assumed that this game is made for Super Gameboy. However, it's now more playable on the Gameboy Color that the sprite and the BG are different color.
No offence but look at this video. Please tell me... WHERE IS THE FREAKING COLOR? There's no color. So OBVIOUSLY it's for Gameboy Color .. incase you didn't realise that was sarcasm.
I have monochromatic blindness. Everything I see is in black and white. I just thought that since the graphics were so good it must be a Gameboy Color game.
I've never heard of it. But if it says "Game Boy" and not "Game Boy Color" then it should be obvious whether you can see color or not. Otherwise that'd be like saying is a game for PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 2. The case says "PlayStation 2".

@mrhuggable1986 It's not the same game. Donkey Kong Land has new levels so DKC can't be better on SNES if it's a whole different game than this one.
But you can say it's better than the GBC & GBA Version of DKC since many implies that comparing to an SNES game (Console to Handheld).
