But when you're out 4x4ing not going fast, unless your in a competition, you want your torque low down in the rev range which is more common in turbo diesels.

Must admit I'm a Toyota fan, but since the Landcruiser went soft with 100-series, I've been looking at a GU for my next off roader.

They certainly are the part tough. The engines aren't exactly going to move the QE2, but the rest of the driveline is the toughest gear this side of a Semi! And they have a fantastically useful limited slip rear diff. Meaning you can leave the lockers till you have the cash!

Holy Crap, i thought they stopped making swb patrols once they bought in the GU models. that is a really cool car, just give it a body and suspension lift and some 33inch baja claws and u have yaself one mean car...... oh and patrols and landcruisers rule!!!!!!

jeeps are good, but in australia, you need pure strength to survive. thats why patrols and landcruisers are the kings of the offroad world out here. there are some pretty hardcore jeeps getting around here but their driveline isnt up to the strength of the patrols. i dont own a patrol, i have a landcruiser and a bravo just for conversation

It's true, it would never sell here in the states, unfortunately it's about looking good instead of being good. Honestly don't knock jeeps, they are pretty decent, and the Rubicon's are stout. I myself have the Toyota Tacoma and it's really impressive. So we buy what's available and make due. peace

So you compare this to a luxury SUV?? WHY?? My Navi has 4 doors & can seat 8.. The Nisan can't do that!! I have done several trails & can say not to knock the Navi as a trail vehical.. I've had it on 2 oppisite wheels before, & it did just fine.. It would do this little track just fine..

We here in the US have Jeeps, they are great for what we need.. Not the best, then get the H1!!

when it come to 4x4's the mind set in europe is somewhat different, that is why jap 4x4's do so well, we like our 4x4's to be rugged, tough, if we want luxuary we buy a merc saloon. I will agree there is a niche market in europe for luxury 4x4's and merc, BMW, landrover and porsche are filling it nicely, with the downturn in the economy it is very unlikely i will be seeing H2's or escalades driving about. cheers for the comment and the video was very interesting cheers.

I have a Nissan Patrol 99 TI model on petrol/gas - it's a great car with fantastic 4wd capabilities - Patrols regularly do the three big off road trips in Australia - The Canning Stock route, The Simpson desert and Cape York. Mine is a 4.5lt engine - the newer models have a 4.8 lt engine. There is also a 3.0 lt turbo deisel engine but cost of fuel is very high $1.80/lt. The Americans are missing out by not having these great off road vehicles.

I have a 1992 Nissan Patrol (a.k.a Ford Maverick in Oz)in stock condition. It has an LPG system on it, and it Roars!! built in an era when 4WDs were built to perform, and not to look good. Driven it off-road at locations in VIC - and it performed quite admirably.

2drs look great, don't allow unnecessary passengers ;o), and perform very well.

The guy who tested this one, in this video, knows what he's talking about, and I'd love to see a few more 4WD reviews from him.
