But when you're out 4x4ing not going fast, unless your in a competition, you want your torque low down in the rev range which is more common in turbo diesels.
@jan585 Well, not touching any pedals? Atleast you don't have to accelerate as much / hard as you would need to in a petrol i'll give you that. And yes, that's fair.
Hey y'all im thinking of buying one of theese a 98's model, wonder if anyone would know any issues with year model. And if "Long" model is worth buying? thinking of buying this due to labor in the woods and hills, plzzz some helpfull info:p?
We've had these in Australia for years and they are one of the most popular 4x4's here! With a driver that knows what he's doing, they'll take you just about any where!!
i owned this car , great offroad ability but the old 4.8 engine and the crazy MPG even in a country where is the fuel is cheap it killed me , hated it cause of old technology for the price and the high MPG
man, they could have ACTUALLY tested it. i took my GUIV Patrol (same is this) out on the weekend through some maaaaad tough tracks and she tares! best trucks ever!
I'd say its pretty much on par with the Landcruiser and the G-wagon (not the yuppy version). The Defender would be up there too, but its reliability isn't equal.
i've an h2 hummer & 2dr patrool 2008 actually offroading wth the patrol is priceless its just like riding an ATV .. very light and powerful & u can go anywhere ,,
why do we get some crappy stuff from Japanese Manufacturers in US? i m not saying everthing is bad there are some vehicles that should not be there, we dont want camry, we want Mark X, we want Crown Mejesta, we want 5 door patrol, we want Suzuki Jimny, we want Acura Tsx with a accord badge on it with msrp of 20,000$ like euro, we want Japanese Civic type r, we want Hilux Vigo, we want toyota premio list goes on and on...
Nicley said,,but I fear america's appetite for HP that they would not use might be the issue here, glad you mention the Vigo is a well built light duty commerical vehicle,,but ppl might not be satisfied with the 170 hp diesel,,if you ask me it pulls just damn fine while at the same time giving you 30 mpg
Must admit I'm a Toyota fan, but since the Landcruiser went soft with 100-series, I've been looking at a GU for my next off roader.
They certainly are the part tough. The engines aren't exactly going to move the QE2, but the rest of the driveline is the toughest gear this side of a Semi! And they have a fantastically useful limited slip rear diff. Meaning you can leave the lockers till you have the cash!
Holy Crap, i thought they stopped making swb patrols once they bought in the GU models. that is a really cool car, just give it a body and suspension lift and some 33inch baja claws and u have yaself one mean car...... oh and patrols and landcruisers rule!!!!!!
jeeps are good, but in australia, you need pure strength to survive. thats why patrols and landcruisers are the kings of the offroad world out here. there are some pretty hardcore jeeps getting around here but their driveline isnt up to the strength of the patrols. i dont own a patrol, i have a landcruiser and a bravo just for conversation
It's true, it would never sell here in the states, unfortunately it's about looking good instead of being good. Honestly don't knock jeeps, they are pretty decent, and the Rubicon's are stout. I myself have the Toyota Tacoma and it's really impressive. So we buy what's available and make due. peace
the patrols are awsome over here in australia!..that thing had pretty crap front axle articulation maybe due to different spring rates in the front! a bit too stiff. over here they are teriffic!
i like the patrols but i recon they need to update there engine line up for the australian market.......a v8 turbo diesel under the bonnet would be good.
So you compare this to a luxury SUV?? WHY?? My Navi has 4 doors & can seat 8.. The Nisan can't do that!! I have done several trails & can say not to knock the Navi as a trail vehical.. I've had it on 2 oppisite wheels before, & it did just fine.. It would do this little track just fine..
We here in the US have Jeeps, they are great for what we need.. Not the best, then get the H1!!
when it come to 4x4's the mind set in europe is somewhat different, that is why jap 4x4's do so well, we like our 4x4's to be rugged, tough, if we want luxuary we buy a merc saloon. I will agree there is a niche market in europe for luxury 4x4's and merc, BMW, landrover and porsche are filling it nicely, with the downturn in the economy it is very unlikely i will be seeing H2's or escalades driving about. cheers for the comment and the video was very interesting cheers.
Mate these have very good artuculation i own one watch some of the australian 4wd comps there made up off landcruiser and patrol utes there are far better than jeeps and much more Reliable.
LOL, this why people say Americans are ignorant, because of people like you. I'm an American and I love Nissan Patrol, I've been in several of them in the middle east. Jeeps are weak compared to these beasts
I have a Nissan Patrol 99 TI model on petrol/gas - it's a great car with fantastic 4wd capabilities - Patrols regularly do the three big off road trips in Australia - The Canning Stock route, The Simpson desert and Cape York. Mine is a 4.5lt engine - the newer models have a 4.8 lt engine. There is also a 3.0 lt turbo deisel engine but cost of fuel is very high $1.80/lt. The Americans are missing out by not having these great off road vehicles.
I have a 1992 Nissan Patrol (a.k.a Ford Maverick in Oz)in stock condition. It has an LPG system on it, and it Roars!! built in an era when 4WDs were built to perform, and not to look good. Driven it off-road at locations in VIC - and it performed quite admirably.
2drs look great, don't allow unnecessary passengers ;o), and perform very well.
The guy who tested this one, in this video, knows what he's talking about, and I'd love to see a few more 4WD reviews from him.
you mean pronounce as Knee-sawn? American people have a hard time pronouncing some spellings, and you're right, they pronounce some words wrong. Might have to do largely with their "American" accent.
I like this dude's review. He seems to know what he's talking about. Its cool to see a black dude into off-roading. I thought he kinda sounded like the chocolate rain kid as well haha.

"The torque of the turbo diesel is pulling this through"
Well....A petrol engine could do the exact same with ease, and faster if you wanted too.
Znitso 2 years ago
A fair comment
But when you're out 4x4ing not going fast, unless your in a competition, you want your torque low down in the rev range which is more common in turbo diesels.
markuswelby86 2 years ago 2
@Znitso Yea, but the faster you go offroad, the faster you break something !!
jan585 1 year ago
@jan585 Yeah i know, just saying that it's not only because of the diesel engine. It's possible with a petrol engine too.
Znitso 1 year ago
@Znitso True but a diesel will pull you up at steeper hills (without touching any pedals) then a petrol. That's the advantage of diesel ;-)
jan585 1 year ago
@jan585 Well, not touching any pedals? Atleast you don't have to accelerate as much / hard as you would need to in a petrol i'll give you that. And yes, that's fair.
Znitso 1 year ago
@Znitso By not touching any pedals i ment let it climb on it's own power without giving extra gas or so. Think we both mean the same ;-)
jan585 1 year ago
@jan585 Yeah i figured ^^ Go petrol and diesel ;)
