You really think they'd let them sail if that was the case? In fact they're not top heavy at all, they're built using steel for the main hull, and then much lighter aluminium is used for the bulk of the superstructure. In cross section, they're wider at the bottom than at the top and the centre of gravity is such that they've very stable even in rough seas.
You're right i'm sure. The Ship is beautiful but I don't care for this type of ship.Too many people and it looks like a floating Hotel. I can stay home for that, but that's just me I'm old fashioned, so don't get upset:-) ) I'm happy when i get to stay on the Queen Mary in Long Beach..lol
I won't get upset don't worry, I actually agree with you, I don't like the trend for slab sided floating hotels either - I prefered it when ships looked like ships. QE2, Canberra, France, all beautiful and elegant. Freedom of The Seas, erm, no beautiful is not really a word that springs to mind. Just big.
As far as I know the RCCL ships (Voyager class, Freedom class and now Oasis class) are all made completely of steel with no considerable amounts of aluminium or composites in their hull and superstructure. Also, the width of the ship doesn't change considerably from keel to the topmost decks of the superstructure.
You're right about the center of gravity though. It's low because of main engines, fuel tanks etc. that are located below the waterline.
thank you for the comment. Voyager class ships do indeed have a considerable amount of aluminium used in the construction of the upper decks. Whether this applies to the other classes I don't know, but I have a large amount of material about the construction and design of the Voyager class and do know that some stability issues were overcome by use of ALU in these areas, and the relative bulk of the ship reduces in width for the higher decks if you look at the ship in section.
Well, to be honest, I've only heard such comments about Oasis of the Seas (from my teacher when someone asked about using aluminium in the superstructure) and just assumed that it applied to the older ships as well as they were built in the same yard for the same customer just couple of years ago. Thanks for pointing that out.
Also, my claim about breadth/width is based on photographs as I have never seen actual section drawings. Thanks for pointing that out as well.
No don't feel stupid, I'm sorry if I made you feel that way. You've made a valid point and you're quite right that externally the Freedom class doesn't appear to lessen in bulk towards the top. The only reason I pressed the issue is that they had a particular problem with the join between steel and aluminium when they built the ships - the two metals when joined together react quite strongly and create serious corrosion so they had to use a special bonding method. It's pretty fascinating stuff!
Oh, no problem. As I shipbuilding student I'm always eager to learn more about ships, especially the ones built in my home country.
I'm quite sure that they'll tell us about this on next year's ship structures course, as they give quite a lot of real-life examples from problems faced in designing ships. If not, then perhaps I should ask about it...
For a mega cruise ship RCCL really does take the extra effort (which is very expensive to do) to make their ships pleasing and distinctive. I am no mega ship fan but these ships are really elegant when compared to the ships produced in an assembly line like manor at Carnival. RCCL proves looks do matter to its clients.
if they made another titanic it would make this boat look like a speed boat back in 1912 when the titanic was built that is pretty good tech for those days
I've never gone on a cruise, but I want to spend a week on that thing. I bet it is wonderfully tacky, with a million ways to spend more money. Wave Rider, huge climbing wall, kids waterpark, mini golf course, several theaters, and indoor shopping mall, you name it.
Love that ship
