as much as I like story and character development in the comics, this cartoon was sheer awesome because it LACKED both those aspects. It was just a show where three superheroes kicked ass and went to see some movies afterwards. No conspiracy bullshit, no skull invasions, no Age of Apocalypse retcons. no, just spidey, firestar, and iceman doing their thing.
The annoying thing is that Firestar's powers were not really FIRE, they were MICROWAVES. You never would have seen fire around her. If you did, she would presumably have been superheating the air into plasma, and you'd be totally FUCKED if you were anywhere near that.
She was created for theTV show first. The producers wanted to use the Human Torch but the rights were tied up, so they made up a female equivalent and used the Mary Jane design for her civilian identity. Then later she was introduced into the comics and that's where they specified that she could affect microwaves.
@Mokkari77@thespiswolf : Why such a problem with Human Torch rights? thespiswolf, I read your comment on a Fantastic 4 post where you comment the same sort of thing.
I actually met the voice actress for Fire Star (Angelica Jones) today in my theatre class today, infact this is the first thing she brought up with my class saying: "did any of you watch Spiderman and his amazing friends?" me: yeah than she said "I was Angelica Jones, Fire Star" :D
@mrfrogbutt1 sweeeeeeeeeet she looks like she'd be fun to draw too :D I feel like though she's kinda a rip off of Jean Grey cause back in the old days (mainly the X-men video games of the 90's) her X-men name was "Phoenix"
Spiderman, Thundercats, Transformers, He-man, She-ra, Dungeons & Dragons, Ulysses31, Visionaries, Centurions, Dogtanian, Garfield, Gummi Bears, The Raccoons, Ghostbusters...........80's was the golden period for kids cartoons.
@megamanzero2000 From what I can recall, Tony Stark gave it to them as a gift (because, you know, Tony's renowned for his altruism and all). He probably gave Aunt May a holiday to Tahiti or something while his technicians installed it :)
@MrSinister1979 You are right. Tony Stark did install their computer headquarters, as thanks for retrieving the Turbo Booster device back from the Beetle. However, he did not do a good job with the power hookup. Aunt May starting vacuuming and the static interfered with the computer's functions.
This is one of the reasons why the '80's were the best time to be a kid. You didn't have to pay extra for some cockamamie cable channel. This was just regular saturday morning network tv with antenna reception and it was friggin' awsome.
@Jonwood74 -- DEFINITELY!! I was born in '73, so by the time I was 6, the 80's came along and boy, were they fun!! I sometimes long for those days. Too bad today's kids don't have the Saturday mornings we did!
@IncHulkLover Yeah man, I don't know if it's because turning 37 has sparked some mid life crisis, but I find myself longing for those days too. They were the happiest of my life. I think I need one of those '80's time machines to come take me home. lol
@Jonwood74 so true, i remember in the 90s there was cartoon network, jetix, fox kids, nickelodeon and they put god cartoons every day, now you have to buy hole fuckin package and some extra and you still watch shit, but not only kabel tv, it was also on my national Croatia programs.....
Wish that they would finally get around to releasing this (and the Hulk toon from the same era) on DVD here in the US. The stumbling block was supposedly that Disney held the home video rights but Marvel has the character copyrights, and they couldn't reach an agreement for US distribution....but now Disney has owned Marvel outright for nearly two years, and still no sign of Amazing Friends on Region 1 DVD (though it will supposedly be available for streaming on Netflix soon).
Remember when you used to love getting up on Saturday mornings with the biggest bowl of Froot Loops and sit in front of your floor model TV from sun up until noon! Cartoons back in the day were the best!
Did anyone other than me hate the fact that NBC got rid of "The Incredible Hulk" and replaced it with back-to-back episodes of "Spiderman and His Amazing Friends?" Don't get me wrong, I loved both episodes, but saturday mornings didn't feel complete without "The Incredible Hulk" along side with Spiderman... Well... At least Mr. T was good. :D
@xjames118 Sounds of the 80s, maaan.... Ever notice how everytime we see a shot of a mountain or nature scene on TV there's always the "Eagle Scream Sound Effect?" Pay attention -- you hear it at least once an hour in TV world.
@mexicandonkeyshow I'll watch for that. I've certainly noticed the 'rusty hinge' sound effect which has been knocking around since the seventies, and which you still hear every now and again in, say, Prison Break or Shutter Island. Lazy.
big props to Johnny Douglas who composed & conducted all the music for Spiderman & his Amazing Friends and all of the other best cartoon series such as Transformers, Dungeons & Dragons & Incredible Hulk...
@SteveSpent I LOVE a lot of Johnny Douglas's music from those series. I just wish there was a soundtrack with all of the various full pieces he did for the shows. I would especially love to get the full version of the "Love Theme", played when Firestar was in love with Sunfire, and at the end of the "X-Men Adventure" ep when she laments over getting over Nathan. I know his Dungeons & Dragons theme is available, but nothing else, unfortunately.
@RadarKat73080 On our NBC affiliate,WLBZ out of Bangor,Maine, they didn`t broadcast it for that very reason and either aired their local news or some other random program.
