@camaxer yeah i'll agree with you on that. i'll even go further and say they were great until 1995. after 1995, they changed their guitar sound, and lars changed his drum set up to more of rock sounds, much less metal. 1995 was the end of the massive, epic metallica sound. BUT what i was saying originally, is that James voice really went off the deep end starting in 1993, so in terms of Metallica AS A WHOLE, they were best between 1989-1992. thats all i was saying

@camaxer I knew n 1995 they started playing half-step down, to become easier for James to sing, but didn't know they played OK in 1995.From what I recall, in woodstock '94 james didn't sing very well!But I say 1993 because I listened to the whole Live Shit Binge Purge 3 CDs set, and James sounded very good!About Lars, it's a pity!By 1994, he had already took off two toms.I really dunno why he changed from his Granstar Birch II to Starclassic Maple.His white drumkit kicked asses!

@camaxer I searched for ages trying to find why he took off the 2 toms, i eventually found something from 1998 saying he took them off cos he didnt need them, he said if he could he would of just took a single bass kit on stage, but yeah the granstar ii was bad ass, the black hardware on it was looosh :P however i think the only good 7 piece he had was in 1994, the rest suck arse, id love to meet him just to say, you should go back to a 9 piece, every fan on youtube wants it :D

it is so good because they were so drunk. the new metallica lost its metal spirit after they "matured" and stopped being metal. Kirk drinks wine before each show now. James can't sing for shit nowadays and sounds like a screaming schoolgirl. Regardless, this video is awesome.

It is only when one is starving and desperate that that spirit can be transfered to the audience, THis was a great period for them, right before they truly broke with masters/justice which too the attention off performance and onto props....

this is almost as heavy as metal can get without becoming annoying. there are exceptions, i will definitely admit, but for the most part, Metallica is really the only band in my opinion that managed to maintain its hardcore punk and speed metal roots AND sound good. this performance proves it.
