ohyes247 needs to watch your first video. I love what you have done with this beetle. I was planning on taking the same idea with the new beetle I have. I love that sleeper style, and when you add the fact you left the "sitting" 25 year old faded/primered paint and "dog-pissed" wheels, even that much better when you beat them off the line and down the track. Keep it up. 2 thumbs up...well if I could like it twice I would...1 will have to do.
How much power and what tranny you got? I got a 56 and a 69, thinking of getting serious power in the 69. Not sure how much a standard tranny will take, but aftermarkets cost a fortune... Really interested in hearing ur budget for this bug.
@1986SoWhat : I'm not sure how much power the engine is making. For the transmission, at first I was using a stock 6volt trans that was in the car when i got it. I ran alot of 13 second passes on it, but got worried when i found a few gear teeth on the drainplug magnet. I had it rebuilt using a superbeetle mainshaft, close ratio welded 3rd and 4th, and billet sidecover, sway a way axles. I got good used parts so affordable. You can run a stock trans but just dont powershift or get sideways.
Let's face it - the VW beetle captured the imagination of a generation, perhaps even of a new generation. It is an American icon (though it may be of german build). Perhaps I grew up re-watching Herbie the Love Bug too many times. To me, making a Subaru fast is cool. Making a bug go fast - that is legendary in my opinion.
@scoobyfan2009 agreed.also i saw a test in moto universe..A Yamaha Vmax motorcycle(one of the most powerful stock bikes) lost in a 1/4 mile VS a heavily modded Beetle which had about 350 hp and launch control..and that car could do wheelies if the owner wanted
Really??? I just seen a 05 WRX for 7500.... Hmm thats not too bad at all there bud. And it doesn't need any work at all. unlike the bug. Which considering one that runs and is in decent shape your paying probably 5k + the engine build.
@scoobyfan2009 Not true. I got my '74 for $400 cash. It ran fine, just slightly worn (original) paint and interior. I've put maybe $5000 into the motor itself, spend the extra 2100 on a mint paintjob and new interior/ 6 cd/ mp3 stereo and a little suspension work... Boom there, not only is my bug faster than your WRX, but it's way more fun and original, not to mention insurance is hardly anything
Well first off I don't have a WRX... I have a STI! And I have put in nearly 13k in mods so I assure you that your bug wont beat my car. I run circuit races and do great! I have ran the 1/4 1 or 2 times and ran high 10's on both. I keep up with Z06's up until 130-135 and then they only pull on me barely. On a track I spank them. Lol I don't know where you get this more fun to drive but I guarantee its not. Sure your insurance may be cheaper but mines a lot faster and better looking.
@scoobyfan2009 You're only reinforcing my point by saying yours is now faster because you have twice the money invested in it. Drop the same money in a bug and it will keep up just fine. Some creative suspension work would be needed due to front-rear balance issues but it's doable. If you've driven a high powered bug before you'd know it's crazy fun. Looks all come down to opinion and personal preference... I don't really care to drive a family sedan with a cheesy spoiler on the back :/
Well my "family sedan" doesn't have a spoiler. Its very clean and is far from a family sedan. It has a full role cage for gods sake. I'm racing cars that are in higher classes and Im spanking them. Simply for the fact that I have AWD a bug that only has 5k in mods wouldn't handle me in a strait or on a track. It just wouldn't happen. That's like saying a rail buggy has beat me before... but at the end of the day it's still a rail buggy. Same goes for your bug.
@scoobyfan2009 Of course it wouldn't handle you if your STi (which cost how much itself?) plus 13k in mods ran against a $500 bug with 5k in mods. You're completely missing my point, which is if you put equal money into both cars, no matter how much you want to spend.. You'll get a lot more done with the VW.. And you're here telling me it doesn't matter how fast it's still a bug? Well then it doesn't matter if your STi is faster than a Vette or anything either right? It's still "only" a Subaru.
My STI was brand new off the show room floor. It was my first car at 16. So it cost me nothing. Your missing the point that I acknowlege that a bug can be fast. I'm just saying your bug is not as fast as mine. And by me saying your bug will be a bug at the end of the day.. Its a tin can. Nothing on the inside.... And barely anything on the outside...
@scoobyfan2009 Cost YOU nothing, but it surely cost somebody (mommy and daddy) something and you know that's what I meant ;) I'll admit bugs are nowhere near luxurious, but you can do almost anything with them. Tin can? Yeah pretty much, rattles a lot and requires constant tinkering.. But then, you get to know every nut and bolt on your car and it becomes like a part of you. All a WRX is just an average mid-level sedan that happens to have AWD and a turbo bolted to it. To each his own, later man
Well considering that there is only 150 nuts on the car.... Something would be wrong if you didn't know your car with such a simple build. Yelp mom and dad did get me the car but since dad owns the dealership it cost little to nothing. And the mods I have cost 13k in parts alone. My dad and I done all the work ourself other than the meth setup. So I know every nut on my car for the most part just from doing it myself. And again it's not a wrx... its a STI.... big difference!
@scoobyfan2009 I respect anyone who builds his/ her own car rather than take everything to a shop, so props there. Especially electrical work, that shit is a nightmare
Yelp from the time I could say screw driver I was working on cars. Like I said I done everything except for the meth setup... That's just a level beyond me or my fathers ability's. But indeed alot of the electrical had to be changed.
fully built motor including cp forged pistons, eagle rods, acl main and rod bearings, cosworth high pressure and volume oil pump, gates racing timing belt, cometic head gasket.
Many more to come....... Hope to be in the 500 AWHP range by the end of the year.
@scoobyfan2009 Is it safe to assume it isn't your daily driver? If it's set up for circuits plus stripped down and all that. I'm currently on my third engine with my bug, just taking smallish steps at a time. Started out with a basic 1641cc and since then have built two 1914cc's. The first 1.9 I had seized up last summer when i was having some oil cooler problems so I rebuilt it to what I have now. Currently building a 2276cc, and undecided if i want to go with forced induction or not
Yeah deff not my daily driver... Where dad owns the dealership I drive something new all the time lol.. But I also own a 2007 Mercedes ML350 and a 2008 Infiniti g35 coupe. I can't say that for the Scoob, I got it new when I turned 16. And it still only has 45k miles on it. I actually bought the Infiniti from racing with the Subaru. I have won quite a bit with that car. Have won more than 4x's what the Subaru's worth from racing.
That is the best way of building a car. To make sure it's done right you have to take your time. I built on mine for the first two years only putting 20k on it. The other 25k came alot from racing. But I just recently stripped it out. After putting the mods in it I have drove it from LA to Jacksonville Florida twice and never had a single bit of trouble. Never has broken down on me once other than a fuel pump. And I really think it's because I really took my time in building it.
@scoobyfan2009 That's cool, lots of power don't get me wrong. I'm not ripping on WRX, STi or anything I actually like them. But when it comes down to dollar-for-dollar comparison, nothing is as big a bang for you buck as an old VW. And even a 600 lb lighter STi weighs nearly half a ton more than a stock bug :P
@scoobyfan2009 well duh... the point is its a BAD ASS SLEEPER. YOu fucking cunt. who da fuck cares if a 2010 car can whoop a 1960 bettle with the same cash? MORON
The only reason it won is for the fact that it doesn't weigh anything. If it weighed the same as the WRX then it would be alot different. So fuck your 50 years older car. It uses the same fucking engine that the STI uses your inbred chicken fucker!
Go suck a dick and get of my nuts. Herman ROFL!!! You where a mistake weren't you! FAIL!

Why is it that Initial D fanboys crow long and loud about superiority when a 1400 pound trailered gutted Honda running 32lbs of boost on a motor with 80 hours of labor and $10k worth of parts squeaks by a solid 15 second stone stock v-8 powered car, then make every excuse under the sun to explain why they get there asses handed to them by a car with state of the art circa 1939 engineering?

Bugs make the best sleepers because everyone knows they're slow when they're stock...not that everyone keeps them stock...
