Bewildered men, with broken lives. Its like they are marching into damnation with no idea of the horror they are about to experience. Just looking at their faces tells you everything. The first time I watched this scene, I felt like my heart broke for them.

When the cinema becomes art...

In this movie and in this scene there's the metaphor of the modern life: under our society's glossy and flawless look (what Shawshank's facade seems to be), sordidness and brutality hide (what Shawshank is: a prison)...

Everyone of us is prisoner: our Shawshank is the daily routine, the insatiable consumerism, the 'politically correct'.

Just few of us have the courage to escape, to get their Ziwataneo (at the end of the movie) so to be really free.
