I was amused when she humbly stated she doesn't expect her albums to change people's perceptions of a piece, because in my opinion her debut Bach album has already done just that. In time I think it will be regarded as the definitive recording of those pieces. Now please record the rest of the solo Bach! :)
The music playing at the beginning of the doc is a Violin Concerto written for her by Edgar Meyer. She recorded it with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra conducted by Hugh Wolff.
does anyone know what the music is at the begginning of this documentary?I don't mean this snippet of the documentary i mean the music that plays at the beginning of the full doc. thx.
I can honestly say that one of Hillary Hahns albums DID indeed change the course of my life. The Barber Concerto got me interested in the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and I am now a season subscriber.
So, well done Hillary. You can and will change the lives of many!
Yes, she is not a Perlman but she is certainly better than Joshua Bell. I have seen both Bell and Hahn perform live and have listened to many of there recordings and Hahn is easily superior.
Hahn is excellent but Itzhak Perlman is a god of the violin. I still love Hahn's playing and think she is one of the best living violinists today.
I like her style. I like each violinist for their uniqueness and individuality. What would music be if everyone played the same or utilized the same interpretations? It would be liveless and uninteresting for most. I like the path that she took, very methodical yet expressive. Sarah Chang also has her quirkiness. lol
During the performance portion of this video (between 3:15 - 3:25) it appears to be sped up a little. Even the musicians' motions in the background have that "jerky," quality when they are at rest and fumbling with their instruments. I made a similar observation on the "Hilary Hahn Plays Paganiniana" vid. I am not disparaging her playing as she seems a gifted musician. I just don't like the "special effects" in the video editing.
I've watched this a few times and can't see what you're referring to. Everything looks perfectly normal. The violinists put down their instruments and some guy scratches his nose, none of which seem sped up. Just my 2 cents.
As if not playing a wrong note makes you a good musician. If only it was that easy. I like listening to HH, but sometimes I find her perfection empty. Then I much rather listen to a B-artist, who is making real music, than to HH playing perfectly empty. No offense intended. As I said. I like HH. Her Sibelius is stunning! Early Bach recordings are amazing too. But no Ysaÿe for example.... please no!
actually if you watch the video on youtube of her playing ernst's 'the last rose of summer' you can hear her play the wrong note, she even gives a little smile when she does so...
i don't think there would ever be a violinist (or musician) who has ever NOT played a mistaken note, i just doesn't seem possible, they are human after all...
The towel protects the violin from your sweat and oil from your skin. It's good to use one sometimes when you have a very old, expensive violin like hers.
There is a documentary called Hilary Hahn: A portrait. I haven't seen it though, so I'm not sure whether this clip is for from that documentary or not.
I would like proof that Baroque violinists used little vibrato. How do you know? It turns out that Joseph Joachim used very little vibrato--listen to his recording here on YouTube. Does that mean that the Brahms Concerto--written for him --should be played with little or no vibrato?
It infuriates me that there are so many "experts" critiquing here on YouTube.
I am encouraged by Hilary's playing and her dedication to the music. I cannot make fine points of criticism about her interpretation, but I will strongly endorse her passion and integrity! I find it hard to imagine Bach, today, devoid of Hilary's interpretation. She might think that's too strong a position, but her playing of Bach is transcendent! Others may not agree but that is merely my statement of the impact the music has on me.
I completely agree. It is almost unbelievable that such a young artist has reached such a level in Bach's music but her interpretations lose nothing even in comparison to Milstein, Szering or Grumiaux. The fact that people compare her with such exalted and master artists is a tribute in itself. I think not since Jacqueline du Pre have we seen a young female artist of such preternatural talent . A musician of genius, in fact.
i fully disagree, but i think it is all personal, but i think her interpretations are very flat, especially the bach partita's, which she plays with way too much vibrato for the baroque time. Then again, it is all personal.
At the same time, it's hard to compare her with more rich musicians not because it's all subjective or personal, but rather because there is more than one thing that defines a good musician, and because we need at least one person to work towards that goal.
I think a lot of people play with the goal that Hahn has, but because it's not always a very sparkly goal, most musicians don't work towards it as diligently or successfully as she does.
personally, when i watch her play it sounds flat. but when i close my eyes and listen it sounds a lot better. she makes jerky movements which can distract from the sound

Perlman tears thru the Bach Chaconne with supreme virtuosity and gusto. But
Hilary Hahn reaches the essence.

Ya, maybe not in this one, but the Paganiniana vid seems like a much more clear cut case of some kind a speed change.
