  • I did the play Camelot last week... This was my favourite song to be part of throughout the entire play. =)

  • I like to keep my arms FOLDED TIGHT while watching this

  • iiii

  • love the fotography !!! look like paintings....oooh

  • "Why do you pick flowers?"

    "Well. . . Because SOMEBODY'S GOT TO!"

  • Interesting to consider that this movie was made in the midst of the "Summer of Love." The Broadway version of this song is lovely, but its sexiness is nill compared to this.

  • Sorry but I prefer the Julie version, since I saw the original Broadway production. Julie had the pipes.

  • freakin' 60s.

  • Her singing is too cool,no passion,no exciting.

  • I know that the movie was not quite the Hit they were hoping it would be, but it's nice in it's own way. Did VANESSA REDGRAVE do her own singing? It doesn't really sound like her - but I'm not certain. Anyone out there know for sure?

  • Vanessa you sound like donkey shit, this is a musical woman, you have no business been there croaking your way through such beautiful music, piss off! So what if she looks sexy it doesn't hide the fact the silly bitch can't sing and if that's what you look for in a movie why not be done with it and buy a porn movie. Julie Andrews would have been far better, at least the prim bitch can sing and dance, the over dramatic croaky Vanessa Redgrave ruins it.

  • @PearlGrimes

So typical of the fans of Julie to write like hoodlums. So sorry but when Camelot came out in 1967, crtiics agreed that Vanessa was the most notable improvement the film version had over the original stage production. Pauline Kael called her "spectacular," while Richard Schickel sad the film wouldn't have worked without Vanessa. The Newsweek critic also adored her. Julie doesn't have the acting chops, beauty, and sex appeal to convey the real message of the song.

  • @markedjuan Sex appeal Vanessa Redgrave? And don't refer to me as a hoodlum you stupid strange cunt, or a Julie fan for that matter, I don't really care for her but she must have been able to do this musical number better than bloody Vanessa, croaking and whaling don't really class that as sexy but whatever floats your boat you typical sex starved Vanessa fan.

  • @PearlGrimes Goes to show that some of Julie's fans speak like Julie, who is well known for her foul language.

  • @markedjuan Your point being what? That Vanessa never uses such language? You besotted little thing I suppose in your view she an do no wrong aww...

  • Thank you, Pearlgrimes, for proving my point. You are indeed a foul-mouthed degenerate. I rest my case. Enjoy the video.

  • -the solid quality of the time - look at her Gold band !

  • Thank you for posting this. I had to ring out my favorite month by playing it at least 6 times. Than you for making me feel 14 again. And thank you, Lerner & Loewe for such a joyful song.

  • I'm not married, or even a relationship, but there are some "dreary vows" I've taken that I'm going to be breakin' this May. *wink*

  • Julie Andrews, Richard Burton, Robert Goulet were not even asked to be in this movie. The actor that play the role of Robert Goulet was dubbed, he could not speak, or sing in English.

  • @caprice6 Thats fuuny!! <3 hehe - adora

  • GONNA MAKE A RECORD IN THE MONTH OF MAY!!!

  • watch this every may the first.

  • @fashionandmusic921

so do I - we must be on the same wave length!

  • You sing the same music, you get the comparisons. Vanessa Redgrave is a poor singer, that's all. I respect and enjoy her performances in many ways, but facts are facts. Julie Andrews' singing was excellent in Camelot and set a high bar.

  • My favorite Musical ever!

  • Will I be considered gay, if I say I like it... a lot???

  • @alexcal2 Absolutely not - nothing "ghey" in having good taste.

  • @c3cubed Thank you

  • I suggest you to watch the italian version of the song, sung by the talented Italian dubber TINA CENTI... it's on my channel...!

PS: I'm Italian, so I apologize for my English!

  • Yeah I saw this at the Arcade Fire concert at UIC in Chicago last weekend... took me by surprise but I must say, they are the only rock band that could make their opening sequence so incredible using this song. Talk about a mash-up haha

  • Warning: This song is about to get a lot more run. Arcade Fire (for those not familiar with them, they're a Canadian rock band that just won the Grammy for Best Album) is using this song on their overhead video screen at the start of their shows (which on their current tour begin with a song called "Month of May," a tune I'm not sure I could picture Julie Andrews or Vanessa Redgrave singing). I didn't know what the hell this was when I saw it Saturday night, but it kind of works.

  • God, this woman is a genius of her craft.

  • Terribly boring, Julie Andrews is 24213647313546136546345131 times better

  • I actually think that Vanessa Redgrave's voice is perfect for this song. Julie Andrews's voice is beautiful but too saccharine for this song. There has to be a breathy, sexy tone that Julie Andrews just doesn't have.

  • The tags for this video baffle me.

  • *gulps* Dead of hot. Jesus. It's weird watching this, because my parents got me 'Camelot' when I was twelve and rereading 'The Once and Future King' over and over. Having hit puberty... hey, Guinevere, you're already all sexy and transgressive, why not try sex with girls this May?

  • Just watched this movie again last night. It has problems, but IMO Vanessa is not one of them. She interprets the songs very well. She also has the skills to show all the sides of this character in what is really a tragic story. I get the feeling from the song clips that the Broadway version was much lighter. That kind of treatment would bother me much more than having actors who sing like regular people. I love Julie, but she sings this song as if she's Mary Poppins.

  • she looks nice here but in the rest of the movie she looks like a whore. ............. she sort of becomes one

  • Gangbang season is open!

  • I am so glad Vanessa Regrave was allowed to perform this song rather than it being dubbed in by Marni Nixon. Vanessa Redgrave is perhaps the greatest English-speaking actress ever to appear on film and she certainly brings this scene to life in a way that is far more staisfying that just have someone with a "beautiful" singing voice perform it. Also love her take on "Take Me To The Fair" and "What Do The Simple Folk Do" (athough Marni Nixon is dubbed in for a portion of that one).

  • @seleehwekim Marni Nixon did NOT dub Redgrave in "Simple Folks." There is no mention of Nixon doing it in Nixon's very thorough biography, "I could Have Sung All Night." Franco Nero was the only actor dubbed in this movie.

  • @mylesag2 You are correct. Vanessa Redgrave did all her own singing in the film. I learned that after my original post. Even the higher range portion of "Simple Folks" was Redgrave. Her take on "Simple Folks," as well as "Lusty Month" are (to me) far more satisying than if they'd been sung by Nixon or Andrews.

  • they took the song down, slowed it down and she doesn't sing half of it, i'm not a fan of the directing choices and the fact that she really doesn't join in the choruses "fun". I don't think this conveys the happiness of this song very well, to me the changes to this song weren't good ones. Other than that, the only thing i don't like about Vanessa's acting is the weird thing she does with the word "lusty" with holding out the E instead of "Lust".

  • i like both, Vanessa Redgrave and Julie Andrews and listened to both versions of this song. From the musical point of view Julies version is problably the better and perfecter one. But Vanessas is so full of live and feeling and I like her deep voice. A lovely song!

  • The tempo of the film version was obviously the director's choice to convey a sultry, lusty mood and Vanessa Redgrave handles it impeccably! Her eye and hand movements, and that whisper to the horse-- it's a tour de force of acting. The speed of the number picks up as the chorus joins in. I could never understand the stage version of this song, it was treated more like a nursery rhyme. This is the way it should be performed.

  • Why does she sing the song so slow...in the play it was faster..

  • Blessed Beltane!!

  • happy may1st!

  • Happy May 1st, everyone. :P

  • This makes me want to go watch "Wicker Man" again!

  • Where did you get the music for this? I can't find it in iTunes.

  • wickedly charming!

  • I love vanessa Redgrave!

    she is amazing:)!

    This song is amazing!

  • I must admit I'm an extreme Juile Andrews fan but when it comes to this song I will listen to Vanessa over Juile. Juile is a wonderful Queen but that's just it, she's perfectly proper, I can't see her believing this song or having an affair. Vanessa however sounds perfectly lusty and lovely in this song. Perfect emotion and tone for this piece.

  • Love Vanessa in the 60s meeting F.Nero wow

  • Is there no end to this ICONIC actress's talents? This little performance makes me want to look for that movie and watch it. Her voice is lusty, simple and seductive in a rock girl kind of way. STOP the stupid comparisons to Julie Andrews, who's forte this material was. Comparing it is just as unfair as comparing Vanessas legendary acting chops to Julie andrews in a straight drama. Vanessa Redgrave - One of the greatest actresses of all time.

  • Agreed.

  • I like to think of Vanessa Redgrave's as a different approach to the character rather than better than Julie Andrews' take. Both women are brilliant in the role for completely different reasons. :)

  • Wonderfully said. =)

Haha this movie really makes me want to go back to those times just for May 20 they look like they're having so much fun ^_^

  • Wow, does she look like Natasha Richardson, eh?

  • well she is/was her mother

  • Love, love this movie. What a great cast and beautiful sets. Done with humor, passion and skill. She is so adorable and funny in this scene.

  • my class and I were just about laughing our faces off when we watched this.

    :3

  • Haha, ^_^

Vanessa reminds me more of a forest nymph than a Queen in this scene. Well, most of the movie =p

  • For a celebration of the lusty month of May this is awfully chaste.

  • I've been to better orgies.

  • I have to agree with this; Andrews had the perfect 'Queenly' character down, but I like Redgrave's singing better. She dosn't strike me as very royalty, however.

The first version of Camelot I ever heard was with Julie Andrews, so I am not biased. I simply prefer Vanessa's singing.

  • so very very sad that Vanessa lost her daughter Natasha today.

  • yes, it is. : (

  • not sure about nip and tuck I too never watched it. It always amazes me how much the girls look like their mum - even her neice Gemma!

  • Joley Richardson is in Nip Tuck, and Vanessa Redgrave played her mother on the show for a season.

  • Wow elantara that really is wonderful news. I too was a youngteen how lovely they found the happiness they deserved! Always though they were made for each other! xxxxx

  • Vanessa IS the greatest actress of our time! This is my favorite musical of ALL time! Her singing is SUPERB! Everything about Vanessa is REAL, HONEST, and above all, "TRUTHFUL"!!!I simply ADORE her!

  • Lovely. I like her hand gesture in describing these wicked thoughts that merrily appear. A wonderful rendition that in no way disparages Julie Andrews. As no two people are alike so brilliant people have their own special conduit of brilliance. I am fond of Vanessa Redgrave

  • I love this movie

  • Can we all just stop bashing each other and state our own opinions without starting a fight? I prefer Julie Andrews because I prefer the song to be faster. I didn't find Redgrave's so much seductive as I found it to put me to sleep. It was meant as a lively dance number. That said, I also enjoy the movie very greatly, and Richard Harris is amazing in it!

  • I agree - Julie Andrews can sing rings around this chick!

  • Of course Julie Andrews can sing "rings around" this. Redgrave's never been known as a songbird.

But she can act the pants of Andrews any day of the week.

  • I think the singing is not fast enough

  • What many of you Julie Andrews-supporters don't understand is the approach they took. Since film is a realistic medium, they decided to go with a 'more realistic,' thus darker approach -- including natural singing by the 2 leads, Harris and Redgrave, to give the film a more grounded feel rather an 'operetta-ish' mode. And so when Julie Andrews passed on the role -- it had been offered to her, they let it go at that, and went for less-than-polished actor/singers like Harris and Redgrave.

  • I like Redgrave's singing! This is the first time I've ever seen this and I'm impressed. :)

  • agreed mirrenfan... any fan of Mirren is a friend of mine! :)

  • This was a cool musical. I have never seen a musical that featured King Arthur or knights like this, its pretty kool!

  • I always loved the seductive way Vanessa did this number in comparison to Julie.

  • This is my favorite scene in this amazing amazing movie

  • She was well payed.

Vanessa is always a good actress(and so good looking here), but - not easy doing this, a dub over might helped this terrible singing.

  • Vanessa is simply GORGEOUS! The singing is not great, but she is credible as Guinevere.

I love Andrews, too, but she was too old by the time they made this film. She probably could have acted "Simple Joys of Maidenhood," convincingly, but could not have withstood the closeups.

  • You're not making sense. Julie Andrews is only two years older than Redgrave. And Redgrave makes Audrey Hepburn sound like ... well, Julie Andrews. I've never been able to make any sense out the casting of this movie. And not just the singing, but the rhythm of the songs is just a disaster.

  • Julie may be only two years older than Vanessa, but she seems like a relic compared to Vanessa especially in 1967. She is not beautiful in the way Vanessa is and that's the primary reason why she wasn't chosen for the film versions of My Fair Lady and Camelot. Film is a realistic medium, Julie can get away with it onstage but not on film.

  • .........thats kinda weird

  • Oh, yes! Julie was great as Eliza on Broadway. But she wouldn't have cut it in the film version. Julie was at her finest in Victor/Victoria. Don't me wrong, I also like Julie Andrews.

  • I think a performer can have many kinds of interpretations to a song. Sure Andrews sang it the best and was playful, but that doesn't mean a performer can't interpret it differently. Redgrave brought out the lust in the Lusty Month of May. Why would lusty be in the title if it wasn't supposed to be lusty?

  • THANK YOU. This isn't a competition. Just enjoy the two wonderful and different interpretations.

  • I may be in the minority but I like this better than Julie Andrews. Unlike Julie, Vanessa is really sexy here. She actually sounds lusty. Julie is a legend, but I think Vanessa is great here.

  • Vanessa is beautiful and sexy enough to pull off the song. Julie Andrews doesn't have the sex appeal or beauty to do the song justice. She's only good when she plays a singing governess.

  • Totaly untrue, Julie Andrews is a goddess she can play any part, This song needs spark and excitment, and Vanessa didn't cut it, Julie should have been in this film.

  • Get a grip. Julie Andrews on screen could never persuade anyone that a man would die for her. Great voice, though, but that horse face up there on screen playing Guenevere? Redgrave was sexy and beautiful, and you don't get better acting.

  • She hasn't got a horse face!! i would liked to have seen her do it, Julie's has an amazing voice, Vanessa not exactly a singer is she? she seems to be talking her way through this song. Look let us just agree to disagree.

  • Julie Andrews couldn't convince us she's a real woman, let alone the seductive and complex Guenevere. You're right about the voice, but that voice wouldn't have saved Andrews on the screen trying to persuade us she was someone men would die for.

  • Ok i grant you that, she's not Monica Bellucci, but she is still wonderful.

  • Lots of guys would die for her!

  • JULIE WAS THE BEST GUINEVERE EVER UNTIL THE END OF TIME! NO ONE ELSE SHOULD'VE ATTEMPTED TO PLAY THIS ROLE!!I swear to god, miss redgrave TALKED THROUGH THE ENTIRE MOVIE! The Queen is supposed to be elegant, poised, and beautiful WITH AN ANGELIC KICK ASS VOICE!!! = JULIE ANDREWS!! VANESSA BUTCHERED ALL THE SONGS SHE SANG IN THE MOVIE!!! and if i remember correctly, THEY CUT BEFORE I GAZE AT YOU AGAIN OUT OF THE MOVIE BECAUSE SHE CAN'T SING!!!!!!! If you reply to this... i'll be glad to reply!

  • I can only assume you must be blind. Next to Vanessa Redgrave, Julie Andrews looks like some sexless thing with a pretty voice. Julie on the SCREEN as Guenevere? How funny!

  • Hey! ok Julie Andrews isn't "sexy" but don't put her down, she may not be "sexy" but she is pretty. And very talented.

  • I said she had a pretty voice, didn't I? Read closely, nobody argued that point. But to have put her on the big screen to play the sensual, beautiful Guenevere would have been cruel to both the actress and the role. She does not possess the presence of that complex, passionate and tragic woman. Uh uh. But she did sing pretty and was kind of cute in her tomboy ways.

  • Julie Andrews as a seductive legend? How funny!

  • Vanessa's not exactly a seductive legend..if you want a seductive legend look at Monica Bellucci, now she is sex personified.

Vanessa's a very good actress but she didn't belong in a musical, if this was just a strict film, then yes, but a singing role...i don't think so.

  • She has an huge intellectual and interior beauty

  • HELL YEAH! 500 million percent behind you there!

  • read the comment i wrote that other person. i'd like to give him a piece of my mind. JULIE FOREVER!!!!!!!!! NO ONE ELSE!

  • gag.

  • Is that Lynn at 1:49?

  • wow, i was considering watching the movie, but now i've seen this... FORGET IT!

Julie Andrews did a way better job with this song, it's not even funny!

  • I definitely agree with you! And I ought to know because I played Lancelot in college.

  • So that makes you an expert on "Camelot"?

  • I never said that it did. But I think I have some clue as to what the song should sound like. And what, exactly, are your credentials, pray tell.

  • I never claimed to have any nor did I pass judgement on anyone's performance. I just meant that playing a role in college does not mean you have any great insight into how a song should be performed.

  • I actually got that information from my friend who played Guenevere in our production before I ever saw the movie. Camelot happens to be her favorite musical, so would you tell her the same thing? I also think that working with a musical director does give some insight into the role. Once I saw the movie, I happened to agree with her. I personally think Julie Andrews did it better. Have you heard her sing it? Or anyone else, for that matter?

  • Yes, I have. As well as other productions. My point was simply that short of being the composer of a song none of us know how a song is supposed to be sung. There can be different interpretations of it. Every actor can interpret a song differently. I grew up watching this movie and listening to the original soundtrack and I love both. I didn't mean to offend.

  • You know what? I agree. It just proves what my mother used to say :That's why they make chocolate and vanilla. You didn't offend me and I hope I didn't offend you. I guess that Vanessa Redgrave isn't my cup of tea. But I didn't think any of the leads in this particular movie could sing. So I wasn't just dogging on her. I hope this makes things cool between us.

  • I'm totally cool. And I agree, I don't think anyone in the movie is a fabulous singer. I just adore Richard Harris so I ignore everyone else. ;-)

  • Well there you have it. If you love Richard Harris, may I suggest the Broadway version with Meg Bussert as Guenevere? I just ordered it from Amazon and from what I remember, it's really well done. If you get a chance (or have seen it) let me know what you think.

  • I love this number, it is so 60's. :)

  • Why does she keep looking at the camera?

  • Vanessa Redgrave is ravishingly beautiful in this, as always. She doesn't have Julie Andrews' wonderful voice, but she "acts" the song magnificently. And she's genuinely sexy. One of the great actresses of our day.

  • She looks quite creepy while singing.

I was taught a more upbeat version of this song. I don't think I like this one. xD

  • can u get that clip for when wver i leave you or what ever its called that would b great

  • she looks like julias mom from nip tuck

  • this one is the best!

  • her name is Vanessa redgrave

  • The Julie Andrews version is way better!!

  • Julie Andrews verison all the way

  • There is nothing lusty about Julie's singing.

  • Who cares? She's still better!
