I would suggest thet you download and read "Gardnerian Wica as Theurgic Ascent" by Don Frew. This essay shows the connection between the pre-christian Neoplatoism and European Wicca (as spelled and refered to by the historical document I read). I trust that you will find it very enlightening and will make you re-think many of your current historical beliefs.
My personal standpoint is that no mortals brought witchcraft into the light, it was the will of the gods, and simpley worked their will through their willing witches ^^
Most antique books actually started out as hardend leather spine leather bound books anything prior to leather bound books were usually scrolls after these leather bound books came books that were hard paper spine books that were hard cover books and, the covers were all-so hardend paper. books that followed that were paper-back books which ment the spines were not harded and, nor were the covers. hence the name paperback
Authors that are listed from the 1960's,70's- today Scott Cunningham Raymond Buckland Raven Grimassi Silver RavenWolf Edain MacCoy Patricia Telesco DJ Conway Dan and, Pauline Campanelli Stewart and, Janet Farrar Charles S. Clifton Dana D. Eilers Z Susana Bhudapest and, the list goes on.
Samuel Mathers(1854-1918) could definitely be viewed as a founder of modern day Ceremonial Magick as could be Edward Aleister Crowley(1875-1947) And Charles Stansfield Jones(1886-1950)
After Gardner and the repeal of the British Witchcraft Laws, some of the Hereditals came out of the broom closet as well. I actually did not hear of Wicca or Gardner until the late 70's, even though I had already read several books on Witchcraft. Also as far as fiction goes, two important movies that helped change peoples views on witchcraft -'Bell, Book, and Candle' based on the book by the same name I think and 'Bednobs and Broomsticks'.

I would back that Charles G. Leland is definitely considered to be a founder of modern day Witchcraft.
I would go so far as to state that figures such as: Albert Richard Reidel German American Occultist, Alchemist
(1911-1984) could most definitely be considered a founding father of modern day witchcraft.
another founder of modern day witchcraft would be Max Theon a former inner circle member of the Hermetic Brotherhood of Luxor

These and several other movies in the
60's portrayed witches as at least
non-evil and in some they were actually the heroes.
