  • Great video man.Don't mind those haters. They are jealous because you know so much and are very informative.Keep it up !

  • Dude, how can you have 3k videos ?!

  • Great video john, 80s is my favorite era even til today. My favorite artists from this genre would be Newcleus, Hashim, Afrika Bambaataa, Cybotron, Twilight 22, Egyptian Lover, Herbie Hancock and Freestyle Express to name a few. Here is a list of songs from these artists, 1) Jam On It- Newcleus 2) Electric Kingdom- Twilight 22 3) Clear- Cybotron 4) Egypt, Egypt- Egyptian Lover 5) Planet Rock- Afrika Bambaataa 6) Dont Stop The Rock- Freestyle Express 7) The Party Has Just Begun- Freestyle Exp

  • electro from 80s doesn't mean it's not alive today. when a style gets born it is forever. and i like electro. i can tell things about it. electro uses hip hop beats, vibrating bass, acid sounds, laser kicks, robot voices, rapping and etc. but unfortunately today most of house listeners and video uploaders are mistaken about electro and they call some house songs electro which is incorrect. electro & house are different genres though the first form of house chicago house is influenced by electro

  • Appreciate this dude knows and is passionate about true electro...not electro as what these guys call it today. The experimental sound can now be heard in most dance, hip hop, new school electro and mostly anything u hear in the clubs...those experimental producers paved the way for the cats today.

  • house is a derivative form of electro funk, and techno is a hybrid of both

  • A brilliant, informative video. This man truly understands the genre.

  • wat about sum duran duran id say theyve gt electo ish beats?

  • whats the song in 5:25 ??? its great

  • @radomer

Man Parrish - Hip Hop, Be Bop (Don't Stop)

  • Good information about electro music.

    Keep it up!

  • This is cool

  • By the way another brilliant video, cheers. I would have included Cybotron - Clear which sounds massive.

  • I had a real culture clash talking to young people about electro. I found out recently, to my chagrin that today it's that annoying commercial house sound with the Clangers screeching all over it that has taken the label "electro" So if you talk about liking electro to anyone under 30 and they think your talking about commercial mush like Deadmau5, Axwell or Benny Benassi. Long gone are the days when electro =underground sounds.

  • A few other early electro songs I would recommend checking out would be Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Riot in Lagos" (1980), and "1000 Knives" (1980) and "Pure Jam" (1981) by Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO).

These were probably the first tracks to have that distinct "electro" sound, since they were the first to use the Roland TR-808 drum/rhythm machine that was used by most electro artists.

These YMO & Sakamoto tracks were a huge inspiration for early electro artists like Afrika Bambaataa, Mantronix, etc.

  • London bridge was the best song !I think 80s industrial was more punk and hip hop oriented

  • vice city wildstyle

  • I think u talk too much :P Just wanna hear ur skillz ;)

  • There was nothing like "crucial" electro and still isn't.I get all emotional when I hear it.Keep teaching the youth and pay now attention to the haters.pz

  • malcom mc claren was up there "buffalow gals", and just to throw a spanner at yah. I got this thing in my mind about, its the true origins of rap. well u c Sir Mix-a-lot came out with "squaire dance rap" right, is this not a calling card? I mean just think barn dance country music, now can any one tell me who was the first to rap?

wheres your vinyl? u talk about it, but no cigar.

  • electro house sounds better

  • cool video! always loved the 80s sound!

  • "Welcome to future"

  • Al-Naafiysh haha okay sorry.. i just looked it up.. my bad

  • hey man what was that first song you said? i cant understand you.. i heard "soul" but i cant understand the first part.. sorry "owl and the fish??"

  • @NWO41508 Al Nayfish = The Soul

  • electro the future

  • Dope!

  • wow you have a CD mix? lol

get the 12" like a true DJ

  • HASHIM FTW!!

  • "I personally think this is phat"

This would sound amazing as a sample. I almost thought that it WAS one. This guy's voice is just so suited to it; him just saying random stuff over a beat would be brilliant.

  • THE PINNACLE of Raw percussive ELECTRO were tracks like BREAKDANCER by the BOOGIE BOYS. & Rapping tracks like KING KUT by DJ CHEESE & WORD OF MOUTH

    btw. Rappers Delight was 1978...

CERONE's Rocket in a Pocket was possibly even older.

  • Hardly cheap & chearful Drum machines ...

The Oberheim DMX could sample & cost a fortune!

  • kraftwork baby

  • @themuffintree101 its kraftwErk they are german afterall.

  • love the last song though! been looking for ages thanks!!!

  • too much electro gets borring

  • "i personally think this is phat" that quote is dying to be sampled

  • I love 80's electro, i have all these tracks on 12" just wish i wasnt born in 1990 so i could of lived it. These tracks had a big influence on me growing up.

  • Hey man !! you have the toch of all the good stuff... i tell have all in 12" disco and i love all that good song of the '80... a great inerview.

  • Happy days!!..40 yrs old now and still love it!!

  • awesome hip hop by man parish and rockit have some 12" records and can relate too what your about .

  • Skooled! thank you!

  • Fun stuff.

  • The song at 5:00 would be freakin awesome in a big nightclub.

  • appreciate the info, I was really wanting somebody with knowledge of the period to clearly define and contrast the various genres and subgenres of electronica by example just like you did. it makes for a better appreciation of the music when you have some background knowledge as to what a particular genre sounds like from experience.

  • People please be aware that electro-funk or boogie as it was offically called in the USA, feel under the genre of hip-hop, with africa bam being the godfather of hip-hop electro. Don't get it twisted hip-hop originally had a lot of differing element with regards to music and it's form of electronica is one that without a doubt wouldn't of exist with out Kraftwerk.

  • Damn I miss the 80's...

And no everyone, he's wearing shorts. :P

  • is he not wearing trousers?

  • what player is that??

  • Love all your Vids. Tracks from that period used similar instruments and sounds just like any era. However, they are different in many ways. To most people it sounds the same which is why I think you mentioned that. Nucleus is another. wicky, wicky, wicky, wicky. Good job brother. A correction for the youngan who corrected you by saying it used to be called hip hop. No it did'nt, it was called break music. Generations who came afterward mistakingly called it hip hop. Stetsasonic is hip hop.

  • This is the real Ken Swift!!!!!!!!!

  • I use to think this was 80s freetyle miami bass

  • just to clear some thing up here.'electro' is what british people used to call hip hop circa 83-86 confusingly though, some people refer to early 80s synth bands as 'electropop' -a different scene altogether.

  • @thelandingsmusic thank god someone who knows what they are talking about I'm 39 and grow up listerning and still owning all of my records from this time. As some one who went to the USA regularly from 83 - 91 I'm fully aware of what type of music this is and it's electro-funk or electro-boogie the electro side of hip-hip, please don't fall into the trap of trying to pigeon hole hip-hop because you will fail, remember it's an attitute.

  • Who the F*%ck is this guy. Clearly not clued up enough to give a lecture on Electro. DJs usually make little sense when they open their mouths. Let the music do the talking.

  • how can u give a "lecture" on the beginning of electro and not mention Yellow Magic Orchestra, Kraftwerk and Cybotron? dont mislead the people with that garbage-ass rock it shit

  • @AuditoryIllusionist for real!

its funny alot of black dudes disregard the pioneers such as Kraftwerk and YMO due to their non-blackness.

  • the acent of that british is so london hehehehe

  • 4:40 which Track is it ?

  • Why didnt You use the Vinyl Extended 12" Version from Al-Nafaayish ? Sounds much Better than on a Flat Sounding CD ^^ But Anyways , you told it like it is :) Also you Missed Mantronix =( They made some 80's Electro Classics too !

    Greets from Germany - TuneCee

  • Kraftwerk started it all!!!!! NUMBERS!!!!

  • I love 80s electro. I had to venture over to Detroit or order music that wasn't readily available in Toronto.

  • Put some trousers on, m8.

  • @perkodanny LOL....thats what i thought.

  • @perkodanny he shows his excitement for "The Counts" album "funk_pump"

  • @perkodanny fuckin innit

  • It's so crazy how different today's electro sounds to the 80's

  • no lecture .. songs please

  • I like that London Bridge one! Never heard it before - thanx

  • awesome, thank you for sharing.

  • Hip Hop Be Bop..the best electro tune ever. I still have 6 Street Sound electro albums, maybe I should get on e-bay!

  • i had all the electros up to 17,got to 20 years old and sold the lot for 50 quid. biggest mistake of my life. now i have the complete series,it has took a lot of money to get them back, but well worth it. from a 40 year old street sounds fan,see ya......

  • Hmmmm, yes, I see.

  • Nice video. Hip Hop Bebop is the BOMB.

  • electro is aural sex,i loved it and still have my favourite electro 5 on cd in the car

  • Early 80s, great time for me. Young boy, still fairly new to the world being hit by Star Wars and Electro music in a very small space of time. Still gives me goosebumps.

  • hey ellaskins is that compilation mixed or are the tracks separated? And what's the sound quality like? Are they remastered or are the vinyl rips? Cheers!

  • Electro is way better than today's hip hop. I really don't understand why it wasn't that big in the 80s

  • Best electro breaks ever - Pledge Your Allegiance to Electro Funk by Dynamix II

  • nice shorts!

  • nice shorts!

  • Good job on educating some these kids, remember mastadon, and mantronix?

  • 1:38 cue the robot :P

  • U missed something....If it wasnt for the Germans you wouldnt have any of this.Ever heard of KRAFTWERK.They were doing this from the 70s.......

  • you can use this black and white shit all you want its mine no no its mine who gives a fuck run dmc were black but got down with the beastie boys and put them on wax who were white its a music thing not a colour thing

  • I see this mufucka is sure he knows everything about all kind of music around the world and the closest neighborhoods.

  • well said

  • hello friends please if I may say it is called the the title of the music that sounds like the 3.06 to 3.20 and not ask them for their response agradesco the effects of music are good elentronica

  • The tunes are cool for sure but I think the 80's was the last time you had any friends.

Get out of your house you boring bast??d.

  • verrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyy gooood video i love the 80's electro and i am 13 years old lol:D

africa bambaataa is one of the most important leaders in the 80's electro don't you think?!

    5/5*

  • @BSGJeffBremerhaven gotta be kraftwork thats where bambaataa got planet rock from

  • @BSGJeffBremerhaven nahh , i have to say egypian lover

  • @BSGJeffBremerhaven nahh , i have to say egyptian lover

  • am i the only 16 year old who listens to this? lol

People at my school give me shit about it when i play Egyptian lover or Cybotron in my car when i drive

    80'S ALL DAY

  • @Drxggy that's right:D

  • @Drxggy

Pay them no mind; they do not exist.

    NIN & Depeche Mode?

Gary Numan was their forerunner ("Cars", "I Die You Die", "Down In The Park").

"Take your protein pack & put your helmet on"-

..you are the last of a dying breed.

  • @BSGJeffBremerhaven

    Yep-

    ..very good ear kiddo!

He (Afrika B) used a lot of German electronica pioneers KRAFTWERK.

    Yeahhhh-

..look up their LIVE stuff on youtube (Minimum / Maximum LP I believe).

Tour De France & The Man Machine RULEZ!

  • @BSGJeffBremerhaven Arabian Prince is pretty important also

  • My Man get back to hittin the pipe and let the musc play. We get you worked at Record Bar back in the day. Good for you now hush....

  • herbie hancock's power!

  • dude, get some pants on, getting a bit well casual..;)

  • Mastercuts!! Great albums.

  • Nice cut off jeans, not. JK

  • Hip Hop Be Bop,i agree probably the phattest tune of the time, just the mention of it sent chills down my spine.

  • Howard jones used the tr808 beats you're playing and he isnt nowhere near hiphop.

The tr808 was used in rap, rock , pop, electro, ect.

The tr808 was a drum machine like the lin drum which changed the way of of music and still are the best drum mahcines ever.

  • Brilliant intros!

  • I'm so glad I found this. I'm 44 and loved what I thought was fascinating and new with Rappers Delight around 1979. I got into new romantic/early gothic culture' and started listening to Art of Noise around 1984.I got into Electro around 84/85 and have been seeking it out again since.

  • how dare you say how does a white know anything about hip hop ect.if it was not for uk djs like me.the records would never have been as big.

  • @zhivagosdj

    U prove my point -

Arrogance of de white man - black music is big cos de soul and spirit of it, is about freedom of expression from slavery. Music makes dj's big. Don't get it twisted.

  • @mallcolmx dude youre just plain stupid thats all that can be said for you

  • @UnchainTheNight1 - A statement wid no proof is stupid. When the black man speaks the truth, u condemn him. Now, in terms of the point that i have made about Planet rock, prove dat it's not de case, or shut de fcuk up maan and go listen to ur metallica shit.

  • 1. you've more than proven that you're stupid

    2. i'm not condemning because you're black, i'm condemning you for being stupid

    3. if it wasn't for white people rap wouldn't have made it big in the first place

    4. being black is not a requirement for liking old-school hip-hop/electro

    5. i don't like metallica

now stop being a retarded racist

  • @UnchainTheNight1 - ''if it wasn't for white people rap wouldn't have made it big in the first place''

Only a whiteman, who knows nothing about Rap, hip hop, electro funk would say that.

So how did white people make rap big in the first place.

Where do i say that being black is not a requirement for liking old-school hip-hop/electro ?

  • white people bought and white djs over in the uk played it and made it big

let me make that a little more clear for your dumb ass, if no one buys your music it doesnt make it anywhere

  • @UnchainTheNight1

De arrogance of the white man - let me tell u sum ting white bwoy - ain't no white man introduced my easrs to black music, of anykind, and funk, hip hop, jazz, reggae, all dem black music is big cos people love de musik and not de DJ's. U must think only white man can buy records. No DJ can or has made any music big. It a de people dat make musik big. daam idiot.

  • @UnchainTheNight1 - Go bring some metallica dj to black people and u c how big him and his musik get. it's pure white man a buy black music, a no black man a buy off white music. go chek it out. u fool. same ting me a say - what does a white man know bout hip hop. Dem want claim every ting. well dat nah run wid black muisc. Rememba dis ting.

  • dude go learn freaking grammar so i can understand you

and dont reply because we've spammed the hell out this guys comments already

  • @UnchainTheNight1 - Another White bwoy get destroyed wid facts - It call Patois, fool, an essential ingredient to de creation of rapping, but just like me say - what does a white man know bout hip hop.

Respek other cultures form of expressions - if not - den no bada listen to black music.

  • just shut up moron

  • @UnchainTheNight1 - In the words of Scarface - only balls give orders - stick to ur bloodclaat metallica.

  • oh my god somebody went to school!

and for the last time i dont like metallica

  • @UnchainTheNight1 - yea - i went to de school of hip hop - a place u def def def ain't been and can neva neva neva go to - cos u wouldn't make statements like this one

''white people bought and white djs over in the uk played it and made it big

let me make that a little more clear for your dumb ass, if no one buys your music it doesnt make it anywhere'' - stick to ur bloodclaat metallica.

  • @mallcolmx What the heck are you talking about? Do you know how many white and mixed race people are responsible for classic hiphop? Its not about colour m8, its about music.

  • @zhivagosdj

And by de way - de main point is - PLANET ROCK - de 1st ( First ) Electro Funk Hip Hop Track ever.

  • Anyone who knows anything bout hip hop will tell u dat u can't talk about de history of electro and not mention or even play dis tune - cos dis is where it all began.

PLANET ROCK - Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force - u feel me -

  • Great Video!!!! Do you think the "Hyphy Movement" was the closest style of hip-hop to "Electro"?

  • MAN PARRISH hip hop bee bop . still fantastic even now , i grew up with this , took ages to source on CD back in the 90's infact the whole album is great. its nice to see you have done this keep it going.

dont forget nitro deluxe and paul hardcastle rain forest another set of classics

  • The "cheap and cheerful" drum machines were the Roland TR-808 and the Linn LM-1 - neither of which were cheap when these tracks were made!

They sounded a little different from record to record because the machines had separate outputs for each drum, so every engineer did his own "real mix" with EQ and reverb as if he was mixing real drums.

  • 1st, 3rd, and 4th tracks are classic. Not familiar with the 2nd. I remember breakdancing to these as a 5th grader. Herbie is a magic man. Man Parrish also had a nice club track called "Heatstroke", but "Hip Hop Be Bop" will never go away.

  • First song: Al-naafiysh - The Soul

  • Very good songs they play those songs in the Garage, Bonds and the Funhouse I think that out of those songs came freestyle music .

  • 5:09 goosebumps

  • wise words

  • he appears to be naked from the waist down

  • wicked mate i love music an you know your music or owe music

  • could you please tell me what that first track is i cant here you properly thanks

  • this is when black music was not the commercial SHIT out now

  • what kind of cdj is that?

  • Nice vid, good songs, but you fail for saying hip hop started out at the same time with sugarhill gang.

  • Comment removed

  • I still get goose bumps when I hear Al-nafish and Man parish....Great Tune.... Good Video as well buddy.....Well Done

  • same here mate

  • Thanks, you should be a teacher! Well i suppose you kinda are. Keep it up.

  • omg! how the fck did u get them?

  • That song by ManParrish was indeed pure genius

  • one more thing..any quick tips you can give on compression/ mastering?

  • thanks ellaskins..this is going straight in my isperation folder. im just starting to get a grip on music production. i want to make tunes with that early electro sound mixed with more modern style synth stuff. love the breaks of the old days!

only using software at the moment though.

in a few months i will be uploading some of my work and would love it if you could give me your honest opinion.

cheers old bean! keep it up!!!

  • if someone is lookin for second track , it is the special vocoder version.

  • dude,ellaskins, this i love a lot of music (50s 60s 70s 80s)

. i looove the techno of the 80s, eletrofunk hip hop , etc from the 80s.. and this video is very very very good !!!!!!!!!

  • Do you have aspergers? Good video though.

  • Hey guis, i'm gonna buy some cdj's and a mixer.. I think i'm quite in too 2 cdj 400 and a behringer ddm4000(can't affort an DJM 800 :'() how does this sound, i'm a newbie in hardware mixing, but have been messin' around traktor 3 and virtuel dj for quite some time.. i wanna get a good quality set-up but i have got a tight budget.. im a bit worried about the quality off the mixer, but loove the idea of many effects, sampling and 4 channels.. hope u'll help me out (;

  • ive heard pretty good things about ddm4000

the faders are good the effects are good and the sampler is ok

what most people say about it is Its much better than behringers other mixers

  • Okay, thx. my eyes have opened for the djm 400, will arriva friday (: cheers mate

  • brought back some head spin and back spin on lino memories mate ...thanks....now on search to find the old electro tunes .

  • Break dance battles, BOOMING cars systems fo sho, FLORIDAHEADS remember 80's Electro Bass THANX

  • where are your pants lol

  • Real electro not that electro house bullshit they have nowadays

  • Great, this is some old skool Electro, the last track is the bomb, you should of also talked about Grand Master Flash and Africa Bambaataa, they were very important in the 80's Electro scene.

  • btw...when i first heard this stuff was around 1984..the only ways to get this stuff was to buy the 12 inch single of each record that was on say for instance "electro" or "crucial electro" that you talk about..the u.s. equivalent of these later on has been Street Jams: Electric Funk Volumes 1-4. These songs are so classic ...they were played at all the roller rinks i ever went to. They are by far timeless compared with the top 40 of the time which were much bigger hits as a result of billboard

  • Neither one of you is wrong..See, in the UK, music such as Hashim and Egyptian Lover are marketed as electro music, whereas it's marketed as electro funk..or old school hip hop in the states..depends on where you're from. Its subjective..Clearly it might be a smart move to market it this way..old school stuff like that is light years away from being anything like today's hip hop.

  • can enybody give title of those SONG ?

  • Good job man someone who know his stuff.

  • one for the treble, one for the mix,

c mon davy D lets rock this place !!

  • 80s techno > today techno. im 19 years old, and my fabourite music it s from the 60 70 80.. and the 80s ROCKS !!!!!!!!!! THE SOUL

  • 5 stars

  • isnt electro like boys noize, justice etc this sounds like hip hop

  • mixmag BOYSNOIZE free cd :) proper sick dude :)

  • Well said - 3:06

  • Thnaks for the vid, gerat track selection!

Look out for new Street Sounds Electro Series! & Check out Global Funk Radio home of the Jam on the Groove radio show with Cozmo D of Newcleus!

  • no matter what all the others say...

Thanks for the great vid and taking us back in time - and of course taking your time for making this vid.

    Kind regards,

    Your 20k heavy youtube addict

  • What this man is talking about is electro funk music

  • while there may be controversy about the history you present, no one can deny that you chose the right first track to play.
