hi i really like these two jigs together I particularly like Banish Misfortune. i was playing along with my trad flute they sound great those tunes on the flute and mandolin together. thanks
Quick question. I also play an Octave "thingy"...mine's a Moon with a 54cm scale length - a tad longer than your's. I'm struggling to find the right strings! Moon recommend 012/022/032/046 but I find the G and D too tense. Newtone sent me a set of 012/017/028/042 but they seem too "floppy" and don't stay in tune.... If I might ask - What are you using?
Thanks for the comment. I contacted Roger Bucknall (Fylde), who told me that my model was designed to take 13-24-36-52. As he is the man who should know, that's what I use. I've tried different brands but I found Newtone to be very good for my set up and they make sets to order so I stick with them.
Single guitar strings are relatively cheap, perhaps try a 30 and a 44 and see how they work before buying a set.
Nice sound and nice tune combination. Just one small thing - more emphasis on phrasing would really lift your playing - tends to slightly run away with itself (just my opinion) - enjoyed well done!
Thanks. I will work on my phrasing, I know there is plenty of room for improvement. It does seem better when I am more relaxed but I often have problems achieving that condition.
People like to know that the tunes are Banish Misfortune first and then Blarney Pilgrim... if my ears are right. And doesnt the mandola have a mighty ring to it!
This musician is playing an octave mandolin. The octave mandolin is tuned the same as a mandolin (GDAE) except it is tuned an octave lower. You could probably pick up playing the octave mandolin very quickly due to the similarity in tuning.
Hey there, that instrument looks identicle to my bazooki (is an octave mandolin and a bazooki just very similar?) ... I Havn't a clue how to play it! i have it tuned to the same as my mandolins at the moment and can play it that way .... do you have any advice mate? Would be much appreciated! x
Bazoukis generally have a longer scale length than OMs and are usually octave strung in GDAD or ADAD. They are often used to accompany tunes with chords, part runs or counter melody. My OM has a scale length of532mm, is unison strung in GDAE which I find best for tune playing and which is also good for backing. It is played much like a regular mandolin or tenor banjo, using either 3 or 4 finger methods ( I use 4). Hans Speeke has a good website that may be of interest
I have experimented with a Red Henry type bridge but find the Fylde one is better. This has not been the case with other makes. The model I use has been designed with a"floating" bridge so a fixed bridge would be unsuitable. Care must be taken to check the intonation occasionally, especially after re-stringing.
I have been playing my fiddle along with the tunes,it gells realy well, I think its a nice tempo, session musicians or sessions in general tend to play tunes far too fast and so lose the natural innocence of the melody. The first tune is called 'banish Misfortune'.
Thanks. In the UK it is often(incorrectly?)called a mandola. The US know it as an octave mandolin. The guy who built it calls it a mandola so that seems good enough for me. I have read various definitions of Mandola and agree that mandolin is more accurate but like many other things, an item is defined by what it is most commonly known as. In conversation I usually call it an Octave Thingy to try and avoid this issue.
Since 3 Weeks i play also Octave Mandolin, i call it Mandola, this Instrument is a English made from "Fylde" with a 53 cm Measure. Is Your Mandola also a Fylde ? it looks same like mine, with a large Archtopbody But i habe restring with softer Strings, the G String (052) was too hard for fingering. I like this Irish Jigs You play on Your Mandola. I play this both Tunes since long Times on Mandolin, but on a Mandola it sounds like new Tunes.
good, but let the d string drone more, or leave a pinky on the 7th of your G string and hit it when you can (C notes too for the off section). i love octave mandos cos you can properly drone the way you can't on a regular mando. your blarney pilgrim is great!

Do you like the bridge you have on your Fylde? How does the glued down bridge(like on a guitar)compare?Which is the better choice?
